This song is very mellow, and if I hadn't given it more time I probably wouldn't have ever remembered what it sounded like. But this song is one of the ones that got me through quite a dip in my faith early in the year, reminding me that God has forgiven me no matter how much I mess up. That does mean that listening to the song brings back some memories that aren't the most positive, but that can't stop me from remembering that this is a great track.

The Kaisers released this funky little track towards the back end of this year, I immediately found it an earworm and hence no surprise that it became their third #1 (each one being 3 years apart from each other!) It's very fun, not too serious but that's what we need sometimes!

I was a big fan of Bad Sounds back in 2017, but since then they've just not managed to release a song that really clicked for me since. Up until this one. This song has no bells and whistles to it, just a voice with a quiet sense of emotion and a quiet backing beat, but that completely set me off. It's a fantastic song, so understated but I think that's what absolutely makes it so good. Hopefully they'll release more like this in the future!

The most recent #1 in my EOY this year, this is another very minimalist worship track but I think that's what brought me to it. (and since you might have been wondering, Abba does indeed relate to God instead of the Swedish band)

After In The Garden became a long-running hit in my chart, I was very interested to see what Philip Jonathan would do next, if anything. Whilst I wasn't particularly expecting a song like this (there's no hints that it's specifically a worship song, similar to Seafront which I sent to BJSC), I very quickly warmed to it and it ended up debuting within my Top 5. As with lots of other songs in this section, it's very minimalist, with just a guitar to back his vocals, but also works very well.

Alfie Templeman is great from what I know! I think 'One More Day' (with April, very chilled ) is my favourite to date but 'Candyfloss' is another pretty good one ^_^

Will need to give that one a listen, agree that he's great though - thanks Jade!

YAAAY at Candyfloss being so high!! Loved it from first play, definitely my favourite thing from him so far!

It really is a tune, thanks for introducing me to it! Thanks Joseph ^_^

Belatedly commenting on the one song I know here - Angel is such a beautiful song and a great comeback from First Aid Kit  I saw them live over the summer just after that song came out and it was a real moment in the show, they're great performers on stage. I've been a fan of them for a long time now, if you liked Angel I'd definitely recommend Stay Gold, Wolf and My Silver Lining, which are some of my favourite tracks from them  ^_^

This was the first I'd heard of Sam Hibbard, but I really grew to love this track. It might be a bit rough around the edges but the message of us all having rebellious hearts but knowing that love is holding us close really speaks to me. And I also enjoy how up-tempo the whole song is!

Neither Joshua Micah nor Owl City had appeared in my chart since 2018 before this one (although both have now appeared since!) This song is another one that really hits home, making the decision to let the light in is never a straightforward one but it's always the right choice (instead of being 'one foot out, one foot in' as the song says). And Owl City always sounds fab!

The second-highest White Lies song in this countdown, this one definitely piggy-backed off the success of 'As I Try Not To Fall Apart' but is definitely a tune in and of itself. The chorus is so strong and the whole bizarreness of the song (everyone being taken off to Mars?!) really adds to its charm as a fab rock song.

Commentary

Ben Fuller has the slightly dubious award of being #1 in the week I didn't actually compile a chart (the positions for the week were calculated as an average of the weeks before/after it besides the #1), but that shouldn't take away from the fact this track is fab. It's about as 'contemporary US worship' as you can get, but I think that can really work for a song, particularly one which is basically a reminder of the fact that anyone who follows God doesn't need to be worried about living up to their own standards as we know we are children of God and that's enough.

My #11 is always the most difficult position to give out as I'm left with 11 songs I really love and I'll almost definitely change my mind tomorrow :P But here we are, with While Lies' highest-charting song this year at the dreaded position. I love this song so much as it's just so packed with emotion with someone denying the fact that they're going to die, clutching more and more at straws as the song goes on. So well put together and I really applaud White Lies for releasing this! (even if the video is a bit odd)

Commentary

At #10 we have the highest song by a female lead vocallist. This song is really interesting - the first two verses basically paint it out to be a generic feel-good song, but then after that it takes a very interesting turn lyrics-wise, which took me a while to get used to as it gives the song a whole different aura, but eventually it caused me to respect the song (and Tina for putting it out there) a lot more. Definitely worth a listen!

I put this song on my playlist almost at random, simply because it appeared in my suggested watches on YouTube. It's a brilliant worship song, purely positive and joyful, and the way the song builds into such a burst of joy throughout (including the effortless switch to 'we are marching' in the bridge) really set this apart!

I never fully got into Tom Odell's last era, but as soon as I heard this song I knew I was going to enjoy this one more. Being able to use nothing but a piano and voice and putting together a song which is so memorable is a real art and one that always grabs me, and the fact that a song about smiing is put across in such a 'sad' way was really intriguing to me as well. A fantastic song to get me back into Tom!

Like a few of Bear's Den's songs, this one didn't hit me instantly, and didn't have much time to grow initially as I charted it just before I cut out music from my life for Lent. It was once I got back into listening to music that this song really came into its own. There's nothing initially special about it (which is probably why it dropped out of my Top 40 relatively quickly before staying around an age and even sneaking back in again weeks later), but as I listened I realised how fab this song is, the lyrics tell a story of trying to be there for someone when the shadows are taking them away, and the vocals are sung with such emotion and sincerity that it just causes me to really fall into the 'world' of the song. Beautiful!
