December 18, 20222 yr I'm not sure it's the greatest World Cup game ever, I'd say it's up there with the finals but there's a lot of recency bias coming out with BBC pundits calling it "the best game ever" - I can think of just as good, if not better finals in the Champions League. For 80 minutes the game was pretty dull. The major difference here was extra time was really exciting, usually in these big ocassions both teams play it very cautiously, was the opposite here!

No way this final was better than AC Milan 3-3 Liverpool in the Champions League final. Extra Time was way better, but that game is as close to the two halfs of football cliche you'll ever see. Definitely the best World Cup final I can remember though, usually finals are drab affairs and this once was pretty much the same as well until 80 minutes. Probably shows these are two good sides, but both have glaringly obvious weaknesses.
December 18, 20222 yr If Argentina win it will keep up an interesting pattern that has developed over the last few years: 2014 winners Germany: (knocked out in 2010 World Cup by champions Spain) 2018 winners France: (knocked out in 2014 World Cup by champions Germany) 2022 winners Argentina? (knocked out in 2018 World Cup by champions France) It nearly could have been the same for France knocking Spain out of the 2006 World Cup if they had won the penalty shoot out in the final instead of Italy. So the streak continues! Maybe we can look towards Australia, Netherlands or Croatia winning the 2026 World Cup or maybe France regaining the trophy. What a final that was! Easily the best World Cup final I've ever seen, I would also say it's the best final in general I've seen. The 2005 Champions League final wasn't a roller-coaster like how this one was. The commentator summed it up perfectly by describing it as "anything you can do, I can do better". Just looking at the varying emotions of Angel Di Maria during the match symbolised what kind of match that was. It always felt like it was Argentina's destiny to win the tournament even after losing to Saudi Arabia in the 1st match and now they've matched Spain in 2010 by winning the World Cup after losing their first match. Also them coming into the tournament with a long unbeaten streak just like Italy going into Euro 2020 was another sign.

Yeh that was obviously a great final too hence I said ‘one of the great finals’ but this was better for me as the World Cup final is a bigger game and the quality of the Di Maria and Mbappe goals was unreal and the way the game went back and forth and both teams were going for it right to the 123 minute! And of course every international team will have weaknesses but that’s what makes it great for me you have to use what you have and build a team and not just buy a trophy! December 19, 20222 yr A couple of other noteworthy stats: - Mbappe of course becomes only the second ever player to score a hat-trick in a WC final but he now becomes the outright highest scorer in all WC finals with 4 - Mbappe's tournament tally of 8 goals is the most since Ronaldo in 2002 - With Messi winning the Golden Ball, it's the first time since 1994 that a player who won the tournament also won this award Also I was convinced that the Golden Glove award was given to whichever GK got the most clean sheets in the tournament but clearly that isn't the case! I've only watched 6 WC finals in total so for sure that was easily the best one. Also there were more goals scored in the past 2 finals than there were the previous 7. The past 2 finals were also played in stadiums beginning with "Lu"
