De Sousa, who has raced in Hong Kong since September, is banned until 12 March 2024. His Brazilian compatriot Vagner Borges has been handed a 12-month ban for the same offence. The Hong Kong Jockey Club said Borges "had an interest in a bet" on his mount Young Brilliant in a race on 26 April.

Chindit had charged through to lead under jockey Pat Dobbs with two furlongs remaining, but Modern Games swept through towards the rail to challenge him as the race reached its climax. As Buick gained the upper hand, Chindit stretched out his head and bared his teeth, catching the champion jockey. “He got my hand – I definitely noticed it,” Buick said, with ITV Racing presenter Oli Bell saying he could see blood on the jockey’s hand. “They had a real tussle but this horse is a real superstar.

In a race run at a muddling gallop, odds-on favourite Emily Dickinson was there to be shot at turning in, but was unable to see it out and faded to finish sixth. Foley brought Yashin with a sustained run on the outer and got up on the line to see off the Joseph O'Brien-trained Point King by a short head. And who knows, they might meet again in the Melbourne Cup in six months' time.
