May 21, 20232 yr Author Wide-margin Uttoxeter winner Harry The Norseman was disqualified on Saturday night after conditional jockey Bradley Roberts took the wrong course in the 2m5f handicap chase. Roberts' error came when bypassing the omitted third-last, going right of the C marker when runners were supposed to go left. Charlie Todd, the jockey of Eightytwo Team, unseated at that point in the race when running directly towards the marker. The 100-30 second favourite Harry The Norseman followed the correct course for the remainder of the race, with the final two fences also missed out due to low sun, but the victory was taken away by the stewards and given to second-placed Do It For Thy Sen. He had finished 18 lengths behind the Charlie Longsdon-trained runner.
May 21, 20232 yr Author Charlie Appleby believes Betfred Derby favourite Military Order is "marginally in front" of his full brother, 2021 Epsom hero Adayar, at the comparative stage of their respective careers. Military Order has won both starts this season, a novice race at Newbury last month followed by Lingfield's Derby Trial, whereas Adayar finished second in his two pre-Derby runs – including the same Lingfield trial. Adayar was consequently sent off at 16-1 for his Classic win, whereas Military Order is a best-priced 7-2 to follow in his brother's footsteps.
May 21, 20232 yr Author National Treasure wins the Preakness Stakes to give Bob Baffet his 8th win in the race under John Velazquez!
May 21, 20232 yr Author River Tiber remains the 11-4 favourite with Paddy Power for the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot next month after justifying 2-9 favouritism in the Coolmore Stud Calyx Race. The son of Wootton Bassett was making it two out of two after a deeply impressive debut on soft ground at Navan the previous month. On this quicker ground, it was not quite so straightforward as he was off the bridle under Ryan Moore two furlongs out. Gradually, though, he began to get on top and was strong to the line in seeing off speedy front-runner Tourist by two and a half lengths.
May 23, 20232 yr Author The Jockey Club has applied for a High Court injunction to prevent animal rights protestors disrupting the Derby Festival on 2-3 June. The Epsom Downs owner says the Animal Rising group has made it "explicitly clear" it intends to breach security. The injunction would prohibit individuals from entering the track and disrupting races.
May 24, 20232 yr Author Rachael Blackmore has been given a five-day ban after further investigation of her ride on Lady Rita at Kilbeggan on May 12, which found she mistook the winning post a circuit early.
May 27, 20232 yr Author Little Big Bear reappears at Haydock today in a G2 over 6f after his troubled run in the 2,000 Guineas and looks set to go sprinting with the Commonwealth Cup a likely target
May 27, 20232 yr Author Little Big Bear erased the memory of a disappointing run in the 2,000 Guineas and blew apart the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock. Last year's champion two-year-old was returning to sprinting after finishing lame and last of 14 runners at Newmarket and looked a class apart from his rivals, travelling strongly and accelerating swiftly under Frankie Dettori. Only the runner-up Shouldvebeenaring managed to finish within hailing distance a length and a quarter behind, with a further eight back to Bradsell in third. The winner, who returned the even-money favourite, was immediately cut to 6-4 favourite (from 9-2) for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot with Paddy Power.
May 27, 20232 yr Author Royal Scotsman bids for Classic glory once again after he was beaten two-and-a-quarter lengths when third in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket after enduring a luckless passage through the race. The Group 2-winning juvenile pulled hard in the early stages that day, faced traffic problems at a crucial stage and raced well away from the action when his main rivals were sent to win the race. Circumstances conspired against him, but connections hope that the Curragh mile will prove a more straightforward assignment for their star under Jamie Spencer
May 27, 20232 yr Author Paddington wins the Irish 2000 Guineas for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore in nice style.
May 28, 20232 yr Author Tahiyra remains the red-hot favourite for Sunday's Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas (3.50), but her stablemate Tarawa has been backed to cause a Classic upset at the Curragh. Trained by Dermot Weld, the daughter of Shamardal has only raced three times for one success, when impressively winning a 7f Leopardstown maiden last October. She finished a solid second in a Group 3 at Leopardstown on her return earlier this month and is now a 10-1 chance for the Irish 1,000 Guineas, having been as big as 14-1 on Sunday morning.
May 28, 20232 yr Author Luxembourg got back to winning ways as he saw off the challenge of Bay Bridge under Ryan Moore in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. The son of Camelot was fifth in the Mooresbridge Stakes over the same course and distance at the start of the month, but was back to his best to give Aidan O'Brien a record-extending tenth win in the Group 1.
May 28, 20232 yr Author Tahiyra went one better than last month's second in the 1,000 Guineas when landing the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. Dermot Weld's filly lost her unbeaten record when second to Mawj in the Newmarket Classic but got back to winning ways under Chris Hayes. It was a second Group 1 success at the course for Tahiyra, who won the Moyglare in September, and the Aga Khan-owned daughter of Siyouni was left unchanged at 7-4 with Paddy Power for the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot next month. Hayes combined with Weld to win the Classic 12 months ago on Homeless Songs but success aboard Tahiyra held special significance after her half-length defeat to Mawj.
May 28, 20232 yr Author Leading Derby fancy Passenger is set to be supplemented for Saturday's Epsom Classic, connections said on Sunday. Alan Cooper, racing manager to owners the Niarchos Family, said all involved with the son of Ulysees were happy to pay the £85,000 fee to secure his place in the line-up and they feel he will be "very competitive" in an open race. Passenger is no bigger than 11-2 to provide trainer Sir Michael Stoute with a seventh win in the race. Stoute won the prize with Desert Crown 12 months ago who, like Saturday's runner, went to Epsom after just two runs. Connections will have until 12pm on Monday, the cut-off point for supplementary entries, to finalise a decision but insist the plan is to go. Passenger will be the only runner in the race for the owners and Stoute.
