You wouldn’t find Elon Musk at Monaco..

Oh I'm sure there's still a myriad of problematic celebrity big-wigs at either venue.

At least Monaco is a genuine challenge for the drivers though. Half the grid would have been in the wall if they'd made the mistakes in Monaco that they did at Miami

Best driver: Verstappen

Worst driver: Leclerc

Best team: Red Bull

Worst team: McLaren

Best overtake: Hamilton on Leclerc

Worst overtake: Russell on Hamilton

Best moment: The start

Worst moment: No fight between Red Bulls

Best thing about the race: Fractionally more entertaining than Baku

Worst thing about the race: Almost zero chance this track will ever produce a thriller

And the race in a sentence: Red Bull are just too fast, wherever they start they'll find a way past

I don't think viewers are watching a race to see how challenging it is for the drivers though. We were talking about entertainment value and now you're using this an argument for one over the other when it's meaningless to a television viewer. You never see 'half the field in the wall' at Monaco or a viewer would find that race exciting. So I guess they just decide they're not going to make any mistakes when they show up at Monaco?

The newer viewers, maybe. I know a lot of long time race fans who will wet themselves over in car footage of Senna at Monaco (it really is something to behold), and a lot of them find qualifying at Monaco one of the season highlights.

The 1996 Monaco GP saw only three cars running at the finish btw and historically it has a high attrition rate. This has been lessened by the size and reliability of the cars these days but it will punish mistakes which is why you'll find less drivers pushing themselves as hard and consequently why it's usually only the very best who win there.

Monaco still remains beloved by many 'old school' fans and it is a unique challenge on the calendar. And noticeably no one cares what celebs are in attendance (except Liberty Media and Sky)

The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix has been called off this weekend because of major flooding in the region.

Discussions on Wednesday between local authorities and organisers of the race at Imola in Italy concluded that the event could not proceed safely.

This was the correct decision. A shame but I was going to miss being able to watch this live anyway and can now just concentrate on the Indy 500.

Perhaps if the calendar wasn't so stuffed full of races they could have postponed it but there's literally no leeway there anymore.

They literally took a month off in April and have another one in August. It could have been re-scheduled for middle of August f they wanted to.

Exactly what Dobbo said. The teams get four weeks off in summer so they can actually go home and see their families and it's illegal for them to do anything considering 'work'. Most teams are already highly critical of the over-saturated calendar and it's poor 'route' across the globe because it leads them to literally live away from home for most of the year. Sure they're all paid well doing a sport they love but it is exhausting mentally and physically.

Rescheduling to April would require a time machine I think. Seriously though that wasn't taking time off that was only free because the Chinese GP was cancelled.

The summer break has been around for a while now and is generally extremely appreciated by all the folks back at the factory working hard but particularly by the folks who actually have to go to the races and do the things we don’t see, like set up the garage or deal with the press or keep the vips happy or build the car

Formula 1 says it will donate 1m euros (£867,000) to a relief fund for the Emilia-Romagna flooding disaster.

This weekend's grand prix at Imola in north-eastern Italy was cancelled after heavy rain caused fatalities and displaced thousands from their homes.

The money will be used by the Emilia-Romagna region's Agency for Territorial Safety and Civil Protection.

They could easily help with the travel though by grouping the races together, so for example all races in Asia are near each other on the calendar, and Europe for the next group, and North/South America for the next. I'm not looking at it now, but I know the calendar always seems to have this race here and then two weeks later the next is halfway across the globe. The structure of it is madness.

I don't think it's too many races.

The first part they are looking at but there are issurs around contracts e.g. Abu Dhabi is contracted to final race and Bahrain to being first. Some have traditions dating back a hundred years (Monaco, Monza), street circuits have dates defined around other events in their respective cities and climate is a factor. Best weather in Singapore might be monsoon season in Japan. European races really have to be between May and September for the weather but that's also best for Canada and contractually set for then.

Plus most full time circuits have orher series to consider. You can't just switch the weekend for F1 if DTM or Moto gp is on that date already or if the Dolphins are using their stadium or if Baku has another major political/cultural/sporting event.
