No.

There is already a topic on this.

so??? that is in the hip hop zone this is in the retro and i suppose there will be a number of people who will never bother going into the urban areas from here

RIP James Brown, not a huge fan but certainly an influence on US music especially early soul

tbh im not sure about his title 'godfather of soul', he gave it to himself and totally overlooked ray charles whom according to that documentary 'history of black music' was the original 'daddy' who kicked off 'soul'. im not so sure that there would have been a james brown if it wasnt for ray charles.

And Sam Cooke was 'The Man Who Invented Soul' so it does all get a bit contestable.

I like James Brown too though. Hopefully this news will get people listening to his records again.

He has beaten the $h!t out of his last woman then

Brown beat several partners of his senseless, whether under the influence of drugs or not beating the $h!t out of woman after woman gains him no respect or tributes from me although I recognise his ability as a singer

Three of the Beatles were wife beaters I don't see that effecting the way their music is judged. James Brown invented funk, hip hop, house and is easily the most sampled musician EVER. Don't let trivia get in the way of the man's achievements.

I would hardly call beating one of his wives to the point of death and only her deciding not to press charges and testify against him being the only thing that avoided an attempted murder charge and repeatedly beating 2 other of his wives as "Trivia"

No man who beats a woman deserves an ounce of respect, be it Gazza, George Best, James Brown or anyone else, he didn't do it once he did it repeatedly to several women, that makes him scum in my book however well he could perform music so good riddance to bad rubbish, sorry if my view sounds harsh but however good someone is at their job does not mean they are immune to criticism

When OJ Simpson dies will you remember him as the most successful gridiron player of all time or will you remember him for beating the $h!t repeatedly out of Nicole and probably killing her too ?? before you say Brown never killed anyone trust me it was just pure luck he didn't

And how can you claim that James Brown invented hip hop and house ? he never even invented soul music

House was created by DJ's in Chicago and hip hop originated in places like LA and Brooklyn

Brown may have been sampled a lot but he never invented a single genre

Take a listen to the "Roots of Revolution" Cd and tell me he didn't invent funk. How can you judge people's art and career with their private lives?? Almost every scientific advance in the last 70 years was made by former Nazis and you don't refuse to take medicine or drive cars or listen to music because of the politics or morality of the inventor. James Brown was an innovator. If it wasn't for his base work there wouldn't be the records to sample and scratch in the first place.

Here's a good idea. Only listen to music by people who take a moral highground. You and your Bono and Moby records will be very, very lonely

Too many historical figures are judged on the morality of today. Remember Albert Goldman's Elvis book which tried to blacken Elvis' name because he wasn't a gym going 80's yuppie. If you take the man out of context and judge him by the values of middle class white society of course he's not going to messure up. People who refuse to listen to Rock and Roll Part 2 because of some high flying moral issue are simply missing out on a great song.

Hard to believe but rock, R&B and soul music were once the music of the street, music for the downtrodden. A way for the poor and hungry to raise above their birth. Yeah, it's a big crime that some poor, ignorant people got famous and made money and changed history. It would be much better if every record in the chart was made by someone who attended the school of rock and was given a police check in case some poor preteen gets corrupted listening to the devils music.

Three of the Beatles were wife beaters

well thats news to me!!!! ive NEVER heard of so much as a rumour that any of them did that... only that lying scheming one legged gold digging b**ch was the ONLY accusation ive heard about in 40+ years.

i dont think james brown 'created' a genre but he did create a sound and style that was unique to him. he was influential but his influences were already there, ray charles, sam cooke. he just notched it up a peg.

tbh, i never understood exactly what 'soul' is/was... its often a racial stereotype, a black person sings soul.. eh? im sorry but anyone can sing with 'soul', although it was the prefered style of american blacks.

Like I said earlier I mourn the loss of Brown the musician/singer, I have an album of his at home and like a number of his songs but I cannot mourn the loss of the man himself, to me I feel the same way as I would with the loss of OJ Simpson or the loss of Mike Tyson, if either of them died I would recognise their genius in their chosen profession but could not mourn them as a person

I read once that Ringo had quite a stormy relationship with Barbara Bach but I do not for a moment believe that Macca beat stumpy although that vile creature must have been hell to live with, I think that she is just making that up to blacken his name to get a better settlement in court

I'm pretty sure before Ringo and Barbara Bach were in rehab he hospitised her a few times. Lennon was an ill-tempered creep who liked nothing more than taking out his frustration on Cynthia, Yoko and whatever poor groupie passed in the night.

Here's an excert from Albert Goldman's The Lives of John Lennon

There's hell to pay. John seizes Yoko by her great mop of hair and hauls her, screaming and scratching, to the stove where he threatens to set her hair afire! ...Sometimes when Marnie arrives in the morning, she looks down and discovers that the whole floor is strewn with Yoko's torn out hairs.

From Dave Tianen, js online

As the anniversary of John's death approaches, Julian has refused to give interviews about his father. In a 1999 interview, however, he was quoted as saying the only thing he learned from John was "how not to be a father."

In her new book, "John," Cynthia Lennon brings her own accusations.

"John's reputation is being diminished," Sullivan says. "If truth is being told, it's being diminished as a personality for good cause. There are questions John would have to answer if he was still alive, not least among them the stuff in Cynthia's new book about him being a wife-beater. . . . He alluded to some of these tendencies in some of the Playboy interviews, but he was never frank about it and certainly never apologetic about it."

Lennon's beatings are also said to be responsible for Yoko's misscarriages. (Goldman pages 319. 359)

McCartney is accused of hurting Heather Mills and his relationship with Linda has also been under scruitiny.

So next time you hear Hey Jude or Strawberry Fields Forever think of all the chics they thrashed senseless and tell me does it change how you rate their music.

EDIT: Here's a list that puts Ringo in the top 5 celebrity wife beaters. Beatle fans rejoice:

Edited by findingout

Anyone that beats a woman is scum in my opinion thats why Gazza even though he was one of the greatest players I ever saw in a Spurs shirt will always be scum in my eyes regardless of how good he was at football, I will always recognise someone's professional achievements but that does not alter me thinking of someone as a c**t as a person

Re: Findingout's comments about three of The Beatles being wife-beaters, that is an especially dodgy comment to make, especially about Paul - who had one of the most normal and happiest marriages in Showbiz history to Linda, which has produced four well-balanced children.

Still I could repeat the well made, much worse allegations made about Elvis Presley, but I'm not going to upset the Elvis forum again.
