May 28, 20232 yr Author Catching up - 'Crazy', 'Hips Don't Lie', 'Maneater' and 'Smile' are all big favourites for me too  Now 64 and 65 were both pretty stacked! Nature's Law could have been a Take That song too really, has that same vibe and deserved No.1 yeah. haha, yes Cascada deserve much more love <3 A little bit to catch up on I see. Shine is great. I didn't really hear it until around 2010 as I was never a huge Take That fan but checked it out once I heard and got hooked on The Flood. It was Rock Steady that kept Flawed from No.1! A very big track for me.
May 28, 20232 yr Author Finally resuming this - my birthday followed by Eurovision week followed by a week working in Germany have rather diverted proceedings, but I'm back! 2007 1/18: Mason vs. Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder) (2 weeks at No.1) cXTgrHruvoo In 2007 I was well into my second and then going into my final year of uni, so as the soundtrack to that period it was another year I look back on incredibly fondly. I do feel that this was a year that started off well, took a dip in the summer, with a few unexpected chart toppers for me, and then the final third of the year is one of my all-time favourite periods for music - late summer to Christmas was ridiculously stacked. On a personal level, I also started learning to drive this year, and had a holiday to the Isle of Wight - my last ever holiday with my family, as we were growing up and doing our own thing by this point. Anyway, Take That's Shine continued its run long into this year, racking up nine weeks in total as it also topped the UK chart, but the first 'new' chart topper was Dutch producer Mason whose brilliant electro instrumental track Exceeder had peaked at No.3 for me in late 2006. The addition of a vocal from 2002 icon Princess Superstar pushed it all the way to the top. I see this as part of the 'holy trinity' of electro hits around at that time, along with the aforementioned Fedde Le Grand and Bodyrox songs. This is absolutely irresistible and went to No.3 in the UK too. Edited May 28, 20232 yr by gooddelta
May 28, 20232 yr Author 2007 2/18: Mika - Grace Kelly (2 weeks at No.1) 0CGVgAYJyjk The arrival of Mika looked to have heralded the birth of a new star - Grace Kelly was such an eccentric, flamboyant, catchy, and uplifting pop track that it could hardly miss, and indeed quickly went to No.1 in the UK and for me. Parent album Life In Cartoon Motion was just as good, a really great debut. Sadly, in the UK, Mika was a one album wonder, with the follow up doing a lot worse and only producing one hit of note. I've continued to follow his career though, as he remains big in some parts of Italy and of course hosted Eurovision there last year. His quality has really never dipped and more fool the UK for not making him a superstar. Watch out for a very young Mae Muller as the girl in the video too, which makes me very old indeed, as I was basically almost in my twenties at this point...
May 28, 20232 yr Author 2007 3/18: Groove Armada feat Mutya - Song 4 Mutya (1 week at No.1) FY5NYBRMurk Now a song that is so perfect in almost every way that I expected it to be a huge UK No.1 - how wrong I was. Mutya had left Sugababes and been replaced by Amelle, and they were continuing to do very well, and to all intents and purposes the lyrics of this song feel like they're about that whole situation ('that's who has replaced me, what a diss'), but it's probably just a coincidence. Add the public interest in the lyrics, and an irresistible hook ('don't panic, panic Mutya') to an absolutely storming dance production by Groove Armada and this was a track that was just waiting to be a long running smash. Sadly, as you can see by it topping my chart very early on in the year, it took an age to be released as a single, coming out way after Mutya's debut solo single Real Girl, which got to No.2 in the UK. It did eventually get pushed in JULY and was lumped with a tragic festival video (30 people in a park and some clever camera angles) that I'm sure Silas could write a disseration on. It ended up only peaking at No.8 and is probably one of the songs with the most wasted hit potential ever.
May 28, 20232 yr Author 2007 4/18: Timbaland, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake - Give It To Me (3 weeks at No.1) RgoiSJ23cSc Slap bang in the middle of Nelly Furtado's Loose era, and Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds era, either could it seems have put out anything and had a hit. And so it proved for many people with the slow burning subtelty of Give It To Me, which along with the producer both albums had in common, Timbaland, went all the way to No.1 in the UK, as potentially one of the more forgotten No.1s to have managed a 10 week stint in the top ten in the 2000s. Opening with a hypnotic groove that stays the same throughout and some self refrential and sometimes controversial (regarding Fergie) lyrics from Nelly, and then Timbaland and Justin taking a verse each, the song sort of meanders on, while Timbaland and Justin clearly filmed their part of the video on a break in a trailer, with Nelly phoning in her part from elsewhere. The whole thing felt like something three superstars just threw out on a tiny budget, yet somehow for me it really worked, and still does. A curious affair indeed...
May 29, 20232 yr A fan of 'Grace Kelly' and 'Song 4 Mutya' out of those a lot. The Mason song is decent too and the Timbaland one but I do prefer other tracks of his to it.
June 2, 20232 yr Author Thanks Rob! Yeah Timbaland was on fire that year wasn't he, some great singles.
June 2, 20232 yr Author 2007 5/18: Beyoncé & Shakira - Beautiful Liar (1 week at No.1) _f3_54dH8GA Shakira's follow-up to the EPIC Hips Don't Lie was the slightly damp squib of Illegal with Santana, which peaked at No.34 in the UK and didn't do a whole lot better for me. Oral Fixation, Vol.2 had some great tracks but that wasn't particularly one of them. She was back at the top of the UK chart and mine with the single after though, and could hardly miss with a collaboration with the almighty Beyoncé, for the deluxe edition of her B'Day album. The radio version was a sultry latin/R&B/arabic kind of crossover and would have been good enough in itself to top my chart but also getting airplay in the UK was the banging Freemasons remix, which contributed heavily to its placing at No.1 here. For me this was a rare example of a superstar collaboration actually being worth its salt. Edited June 2, 20232 yr by gooddelta
June 2, 20232 yr Author 2007 6/18: Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) (2 non-consecutive weeks at No.1) XT6yOIC6ihI Deep into the UK's bad old days at Eurovision, just how could we follow up Daz Sampson? With something even more ridiculous, of course. Russ, Caroline, Natalie and David of Scooch were a Steps-lite act that had enjoyed a few middling hits in 2000, most of which were actually far better than their chart positions suggested (More Than I Needed To Know and For Sure are fantastic pop). They unexpectedly returned for the UK selection show Making Your Mind Up with the Carry On style innuendo laden track Flying The Flag (For You), an aviation themed track that was completely rooted in their turn of the century bubblegum pop sound, but with ludicrous spoken ad libs ("some salted nuts, sir", "would you like something to suck on for landing sir?"). As a nation we hadn't moved on from Bucks Fizz at this point, so Of COURSE it was going to win the UK national final - and yes I voted for it over Cyndi, who famously lost out . Justin Hawkins, Brian Harvey, Liz McClarnon and Big Brovaz also lost out in the same year. And of course it was going to flop at Eurovision, this is dated British humour and a kind of pop that was never going to translate, save for the protest 12 from Malta. Plus the airport themed performance was ridiculous, with chaotic vocals, including those from the backing singers sat in full view on the airport seats on stage, after controversy that they were singing behind the stage in the national final. With a Charlotte Church spat to boot, this was the most the UK entry had been talked about at home for a very long time, and it's little surprise that the track garnered enough support to go top five in the charts, giving Scooch their first top five hit in seven years. Ludicrous in every way, but I have fond memories of this period, and it's a very catchy pop song that's still very well remembered - ask 100 members of the public to name UK entries of this century and chances are many will say Sam and then Scooch, then give up. Corny as hell but they left a legacy.
June 2, 20232 yr Author 2007 7/18: Dimitry Koldun - Work Your Magic (2 weeks at No.1) PxON-jTcBPA Of course the real story of Eurovision 2007 was the dominance of Eastern European countries, with all of the Western nations either finishing bottom 10 or failing to reach the final altogether. Yes there was some bloc voting going on, but for the most part the songs were just better - Molitva and Dancing Lasha Tumbai made a still memorable top two while Serebro's third placed Song #1 for Russia peaked at No.2 in my chart but finished in my top ten of the year. Bulgaria and Belarus also sent their best ever entries, and it's the latter, which finished sixth, that squeaked to the top of my chart post-contest. If Rise Like A Phoenix was the best ballad the Bond franchise never got hold of then Work Your Magic was certainly a great uptempo that they missed out on years earlier. The intro and brass orchestral production throughout is classic 007, while the charismatic Koldun was amusingly getting a lot of attention for looking more like Princess Diana than either of her children did. A brilliant entry from Belarus with great verses, stellar production and a powerful chorus.
June 2, 20232 yr Author 2007 8/18: Missy Higgins - Peachy (1 week at No.1) 8s8RG_Mx_3E June/July 2007 was a very curious period in my chart. I'd started driving lessons, was on a summer uni break and putting a lot of overtime in at my work at the time (Asda), and my mind for the first time in years just really wasn't at all focused on music at all. This led to a run of very random chart toppers and non-No.1s in an extremely quiet period. Four of the five chart toppers from this period failed to make my top 30 of the year, a very unusual circumstance for any No.1, let alone so many in succession. The jaunty Peachy was the third single from Australian Missy Higgins' second album, and her second No.1 for me after Ten Days in 2005. A catchy and likeable enough track, what this list masks is that lead single Steer was actually way bigger for me, a huge No.2 a few months earlier that finished in my top ten of the year and was very unlucky to miss out on No.1 due to competition.
June 2, 20232 yr Old good Scooch. It was the last time, when UK won my ESC ranking. Also just look on YVA - I Dangu performance from 2009 Lithuanian pre-selection. It's like a mix of "Toxic" and "Flying The Flag".
June 2, 20232 yr Scooch *.* I'm a fan of both versions of 'Beautiful Liar' but like with 'Work' the following year the Freemasons did make it sound better tbh.
June 5, 20232 yr Author Old good Scooch. It was the last time, when UK won my ESC ranking. Also just look on YVA - I Dangu performance from 2009 Lithuanian pre-selection. It's like a mix of "Toxic" and "Flying The Flag". Gosh, then again didn't Slovenia also send a flight attendant act in 2002, so Scooch weren't even first with it at Eurovision. Scooch *.* I'm a fan of both versions of 'Beautiful Liar' but like with 'Work' the following year the Freemasons did make it sound better tbh. Yeah Freemasons certainly worked their magic on Destiny's Child member songs. Same with Beyoncé's Green Light, which had a fab mix by them.
June 5, 20232 yr Oh that's true. I forgot about that Beyonce track altogether not to forget it had a Freemasons sprinkling too
