I don't think Rooney would work in midfield, mainly because no strikers can tackle. No doubt within ten minutes he'd be sent off because of how furstrated he'd get.

Crouch has easily been England's best striker this year but overall Rooney is a better player than Crouch and he adds more to the team overall because when Crouch plays, England seem to play the long all tactic which does not work at all. I think Crouch should be used as an impact player because he can change a game because he of his height.

I am not convinced though that Johnson or Defoe will bang in the goals with Rooney as a partner, I see a lot of 0-0 draws ahead, Defoe relies on pace that is his big asset and he would not get the service as the opponents would have 2 men marking Rooney out of the game and Defoe would be too small for crosses from the wide men, Johnson is the opposite he is too slow but would do better in the air than defoe

I think this formation might work

Robinson

G Neville - - Terry - - King - - Cole

- Carrick or Hargreaves -

Beckham/Lennon - - Gerrard - - J Cole

-Rooney-

- Crouch -

Well i'm not entirley convinced about Johnson either playing for England. He's a good player but I just don't know how good he'd be for England but then again he's only played a couple of teams and on the majority of those occasions he was being played out of position so you can't really judge him on that.

I'm unsure about that mainly because Rooney would get too isolated in that position. Rooney's strengths are when he gets the ball and he opens up oppotunitys to his striker patrner but I just think that maybe some of the midfield will just hoof the ball up to Crouch and then because Crouch will be man marked all game, England have wasted the ball. Granted though maybe without Lampard playing the whole hoof the ball to Crouch thing may not happen because i'm pretty sure he was the main culprit during the World Cup.

When Defoe and Keane (similar in size to Rooney) play together for us Defoe plays as the lone striker and Keane has a free role just infront of the midfield 3 but behind Defoe, Keane is a striker by nature but he loves running at people and that is quite similar to how Rooney plays so I think Rooney might be able to work with Defoe in a similar way to Keane does

That would probably work well, but the one problem with Rooney is him temprement. I don't know what he'd do if he were to play in a role like that and hardly see any of the ball, I mean that happened against Portugal and Ronaldo knew how to wind Rooney up because he was getting furstrated.
