The frontman of electronic music group M83 best known for Midnight City has bizarrely gone on a rant against… electronic dance music

“I mentioned this in an interview before, but it’s almost that I want to keep the fans of ‘Midnight City’ away from entering — which I mean mostly as a bad joke,” Gonzalez said.

“For me, the struggle with being a successful artist with that album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, and especially with that track, ‘Midnight City’, is that all of a sudden, I had this huge EDM following. EDM is probably one of the styles of music that I hate the most. All of a sudden, I have these bro EDM DJs playing my music, and I just can’t even care less. Sometimes I wish that I could erase that fan base but I don’t think it’s possible to do that.”

Does he make a valid point here for not wanting a following of dance fans or DJs to remix his music or is he just being a massive snob?

I think it’s quite disappointing and a shame that EDM still isn’t really seen as a credible music genre by many of the indie crowd.

Of course this is ultimately cheap publicity for him just in time for a new album coming out too.

Lol calm down bro. Imagine shutting out fans of your music because you don't like dance music. Why let the song be remixed in the first place then?? Eric Prydz remixing Midnight City is likely to be what led to a rise in dance music fans being interested in the song.

Didn't know 'Midnight City' was popular with EDM producers but I always thought 'Paris' by The Chainsmokers was really influenced by it.

I think he is being a bit ungrateful.
