I thought there was a thread about this, but guess not...

A while ago, Smoke 2 Seven's "debut" album was released digitally on streaming services. They were best known for their flop singles Been There Done That (#26) and Envy (#79).

Obviously, the album is in itself not entirely finished - it probably would've received a bit more production on it if it had been released. As it is, it is sort of samey throughout and I don't think there's any missed breakout hits on there - "Lizzies" is nice, as is "Kinda Unstuck" and "Crazy Tale". I assume "Too Late For Sorry" would've been the third obligatory girl group midtempo single, but again I couldn't really see fare better than the previous singles.

Tracks 3-13 currently has under a 1000 streams on Spotify, so why not give it a go and give help give these poor flops an official stat

'Been There, Done That' sounds alright. Not keen on 'Envy' though and not surprised it peaked outside the top 75 then.

I think the issue is that none of the songs are really that type of "breakthrough hit" material. Been There Done That is probably the strongest of the bunch (but then again, I'd assume it was given extra attention once it was picked as a single). Still, some tracks could've been cute album tracks for other pop artists at the time; I think they needed more diversity though (both production and lyricwise - it's all very "we're fierce girls and you suck").

"Payback" becomes the first non-single song to reach 1000+ streams!

I might or might have not put the album on constant rotation for the past few weeks to attempt to break all songs to the 1000 mark.

I vaguely remember them, wasn't keen on their debut 'Been There Done That', but did like 'Envy' & remember that was getting a lot on play on the Box music channel & even made the top 5 on that channel at some point, but the release got postponed & by the time it finally came out in March 2003, it had been a year since their last single which wasn't a success by any means, so they didn't stand a chance with 'Envy'.

The song could have had some potential if it maybe came out sooner, but listening to it again I can see why this group didn't find any success. The songs needed stronger vocals & production, if 'Envy' was sung by Girls Aloud, then it would sounded a whole lot better & been a chart success.

I remember there was a lot of hype around 'Been There, Done That' at the time and I expected it to do a lot better than it did. Sadly after that the writing was on the wall and I can't imagine their label would have really been willing to push or invest in them, hence what happened with 'Envy'.

I can't help but think a big part of the problem might have been their name. It just... doesn't scan.
