Posted April 12, 20232 yr 10 seasons, brand new cast and an adaptation of the original books. JK Rowling is an executive producer. Thoughts?
April 12, 20232 yr A laughably transparent case of desperation. I mean I'm not surprised, they've clearly got no clue what to do with the franchise despite lots of potential now Fantastic Beasts has failed, the cast has distanced themselves and Rowling's still being a transphobe and they need to milk the cash cow somehow so this is the logical step, but my gosh, I don't think I've ever seen something so desperate, the movies are just over a decade old and still beloved by newer generations that didn't even grow up with them and it really is hard to see what else they can add to it (I understand the movies left out quite a bit, I've not read past the fourth book so can't really comment, but however much they add, they are going to ultimately be very similar in outcomes and it's not like the movies were left incomplete or unsatisfying, there is no immediate need to right this like His Dark Materials was). It really symbolises the death knell of creativity within the big studios. I won't watch it, I don't need another version when the familiar one is just fine, and I find it very hard to support Harry Potter stuff these days what with how much it empowers JK Rowling and for her to continue attacking Trans rights. And even though I'm sure it'll be a success and it may well be good, I can't see how it won't be compared in some way...the films weren't perfect, but the casting was spot on. The three leads again weren't perfect as characters but Daniel in particular WAS Harry and the adults were even more so. How can you possibly replace Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith and Robbie Coltrane?! Plus you have the music, iconography, designs etc. that are just so entrenched into people's minds, I just can't see how they'll get it all right. Moreover, even with a ten-year run (I don't think it's necessarily ten seasons from what I read, just running over ten years), they are gonna have to pump these out fast to avoid the kids aging too much unless they don't mind them being in their 30s in their final year, and I'd find it hard to imagine quality won't be sacrificed somewhat with that even with a higher budget. Feel free to quote me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this is gonna go the way they're hoping. In summary, Warner Bros. to die xx
April 12, 20232 yr This woman needs serious help. It’s way too soon for this kind of remake-it’s kind of not needed at all. I’m guessing she’s still pissed her original cast can no longer stand her.
April 13, 20232 yr I just- why? It's not so much just the optics that bothers me (although of course this is a desperate attempt to repair JK's image, not like it matters or it could ever be repaired), but I just think the movies despite all of their faults had already done so much with the source material. I would rather have a completely new story within the Wizarding World with different characters and conflicts while still having a tie to the original books/movies that are beloved by whatever is left of the fanbase. I mean, it worked for Hogwarts Legacy!
April 13, 20232 yr So it's a straight up remake of the original books/films? How pointless and desperate.
April 13, 20232 yr Given Rowling's now well-known views I'm morbidly fascinated at how the show (Executive Produced by her still) is going to handle the multiple plot points in the first two books that involve boys going into the girls' bathroom, as a positive thing and integral part of the narrative.

It's very that moment in Friends where Monica says if everyone falls out with her "I'll buy new friends"!
April 13, 20232 yr Same logo, same music, same feel, JK's not even trying to hide that she wants new stars to get rid of the old ones who are against her transphobic views  Wont be watching.
April 13, 20232 yr It's not a remake at all. A television series will be able to include a lot of material that was left out of the films. I had to laugh at the fact that they announced that there would be a new cast - as if there was any chance of thirty-somethings playing eleven-year-olds. I hop JKR repeats her insistence that the actors should be British.
April 13, 20232 yr This is a wholly unnecessary cash grab by a greedy studio desperate to prop up a failed bet on streaming with a cash cow property instead of investing in new and interesting talent That this also funds that rancid hag is also a giant negative. There’s absolutely nothing new to say in the original book story. I don’t see the value or point of this beyond pure greed. Actually I don’t think there is a motivation here beyond cash. Soulless, just like the original creator

Let’s face it, there weren’t that many essential parts of the books that didn’t make it into the films and those were made pretty much under JK’s supervision so you can’t even say that this will be her true vision or anything. It’s being made for two reasons-the studio lost money on Fantastic Beasts and are trying to recuperate and JK can attempt to stick two fingers up at the previous stars who have been vocally critical of her in recent years. She’s a mad narcissist.
April 13, 20232 yr I knew it would be rebooted at some point but I was still expecting it to be a few years away (more like 2030). I was expecting it after they’d finished the Fantastic Beasts franchise but I guess that flopping has meant plans have needed to advance. I know there’s still so much appetite for all the Harry Potter merch but the films are still so popular and respected that this feels totally unnecessary. As Chez says, it’s not as though they’re really needing to remedy any wrongs. Yes they cut things out but, off the top of my head, there’s nothing that strikes me as overly essential. I can only think of lots more Quidditch, ghost stuff (incl Peeves) and Hermione’s free the elves storyline. The whole franchise is just getting milked until it’s as dry as a bone. I know the studios see the importance of intellectual property but at least do something new with it. And if there’s no new stories to tell or those new stories aren’t popular, maybe give it a rest!!

April 14, 20232 yr I would love a Hogwarts series with completely new characters at school, but I see no point in rebooting the original Harry Potter story.

Such a good point!
April 17, 20232 yr It involves children and everyone knows we only have to be afraid of (adult) trans women!1 But I don't know how deep her obsession runs in regards to toilets.
