May 3, 20232 yr Author NztGRKGx-qI #06. Something About You | 7.611 Highest Scores: 10: (Simon, Nick F1), Lowest Scores: 5: (awardinary, Roba, DrizzyMack) Just missing the top 5 by a single point at #6 is Something About You, released in September 2006 as the lead single from Jamelia's 3rd studio album Walk With Me & was written by Jamelia, Carsten "Soulshock" Schack, and Peter Biker, while production was handled by Biker and Schack. Jamelia not wanting to repeat herself as an artist described the sound of the song as being more "experimental and not as "R&B" as her previous material." Upon release the song was released as a download single first and charted at #28 on the UK singles chart before reaching a #9 peak a few weeks later. The track also found success elsewhere with a top 5 peak in Scotland, top 20 in Australia & top 40 peaks in Belgium, Ireland & Italy. Well this was certainly a very different sound for Jamelia at the time and taking a big risk by experimenting with a different style and it kinda works for the most part. This is a catchy little uptempo bop with a decent verses that builds towards the chorus with stunning vocals. However the chorus itself could have done with a little bit more edge & doesn't quite pop in the way it should. Honestly I dunno why 'Beware of the Dog' wasn't released as the lead single as that may have had a lot more impact & then release 'Something About You' as the follow up. Overall the song itself is decent in its own right and perhaps a little too ahead of its time.
May 3, 20232 yr Author We are now down to our final 5: Superstar Thank You See It in a Boy's Eyes Stop Beware of the Dog Edited May 3, 20232 yr by Nina West
May 3, 20232 yr Great stuff Nina, sorry for my lack of involvement in these results but they are looking good and balanced so far! :)
May 3, 20232 yr I think I was a bit generous in giving 'Something About You' 7, it's a fairly weak song and it's easy to see why the album bombed off the back of it. Rather than a risk, it sounded like it was trying to ape the sound Kelly Clarkson was hugely popular with at that moment. At least we have the correct and definitive top 5 remaining.
May 3, 20232 yr I do like something about you, it is different for Jamelia but overall its the correct Top 5.
May 3, 20232 yr 'Something About You' was just a standard run the mill pop song that year for me. Nothing special really.
May 3, 20232 yr Forgot to take part in this but I can’t believe what I’m reading… Something About You is fantastic! Absolutely a 10 if I’d rated. Simon and Nick F1 know what’s up. Anyway, as you were x
May 4, 20232 yr Loved Something About You back when it got released in Australia in 2007, but it’s kind of fallen out of favour with me now. As much as I still do like it it probably finished in the right position.
May 4, 20232 yr I liked Something About You but didn't absolutely adore it as I remember half of Buzzjack did when it was released. Still a strong track though which I prefer to Thank You personally (sacrilege, I know!)
May 4, 20232 yr Author u4Zk6EWgHLw #05. Stop | 7.666 Highest Scores: 10: (ready for it), Lowest Scores: 4: (JulianT) At the #5 spot is Stop, a cover of the Sam Brown hit from 1988. Jamelia covered the song after the makers of the 2004 film Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, approached her to record it to illustrate an integral part of the film. Jamelia instantly accepted the offer and explained how much she was a fan of the character and of the first film. Released in November 2004 as a double A-side with the song 'DJ' which featured on her 2nd album Thank You & peaked at #9 on the UK singles chart and became her 5th top 10 hit, spending 12 weeks on the charts. Worldwide the track hit top 10 in Scotland, top 20 in Ireland, top 40 peaks in Greece, Switzerland & Australia, and was also released on its own in Germany where it made a minor dent by peaking at #56. The formats of both tracks received a staggered release with the 2 track CD one disc being released on November 1st, due to time. Due to time constraints, the "Stop" music video (directed by Alex Hemming) could not be added in time to make the 1 November release date and so the CD two was released a week later on 8 November 2004. The single release also included a cover of Wham's 'Last Christmas'. The success of this double A-side release was because of 'Stop' due to it getting more radio play and far more attention due to it's inclusion on a popular movie soundtrack. Jamelia does a bang up job with this cover, far better than most of the covers that were coming out at the time. Now its virtually impossible for any artist to outdo an original classic but Jamelia comes pretty close as her version doesn't stray too far from the original and her strong yet sweet vocals really commands attention. This is a really beautiful track that gives you that warm winter feeling and a great addition to Jamelia's discography.
May 4, 20232 yr Author The next entry will take a huge leap in average at 8.3 & it will be a 'Thank You' single...
May 4, 20232 yr Seems similar to the U2 averages except this being the top 4 compared to the top 2 for U2 with the big increase in average scores. 'Stop' is a great cover.
May 4, 20232 yr It's not one I listen to often, but it's really quite lovely. Interesting to see how 'DJ' would have done on its own (which was originally due to be the case), I definitely heard this waaaay more at the time and it almost seemed like the main single being promoted.
May 4, 20232 yr Funny as I only remember hearing DJ at the time and it had passed me by that the Stop cover was so well regarded
