29TH DECEMBER

Taking just three weeks to become the best-selling single of the 1984 and of the 80s, “Do They Know It’s Christmas” refuses to slacken the pace though it can't increase sales again as it relents 18% to a still amazing 634,814 copies last week to become Christmas No 1 for 1984. That puts its sales at 1,978,324 in just 21 days as it stays on course to sell its two millionth copy during this week, those who suspected the selling power of Frankie couldn’t be met this year are proved wrong at the death!

Phonogram are ensuring demand for the single by having all five of its European factories dedicated to produce copies of the single as it tops the charts in various countries around the world as the stars of the record came together this week to make the Christmas TOTP a special one with a “live” performance though the absence of some of the singers gave lie to the fact that it was anything but live.

“Ghostbusters” returns to the top 10 on the strength of its UK Cinema release to cinema which sees the song, which had been as low as no 46 bound back up 15-7 (64,175) this week and in the process sells its 600,000th copy as the year comes to a stellar end for the big sellers.

The only new song to the top 10 sneaks in 13-10 (53,703) for Tears For Fears who have struggled to find their 1982/83 form when they scored three top 5 hits on the trot. Subsequent singles “The Way You Are” and “Mother’s Talk” only made No’s 24 & 14 respectively but they have found their form again with “Shout”. The song is apparently a call to arms to engage with politics, it’s the second single to be lifted from the second TFT album “Songs From The Big Chair” expected in the spring.

The entire top 5 top the 100,000 mark with Band Aid having already been discussed Wham! Are runner’s up again to Band Aid with “Last Christmas” moving a best yet 298,129 copies (another record sale for a No 2 track) meaning it has sold 728,127 in three weeks to become the group’s biggest seller. Promotion for the single will now switch to “Everything She Wants” with a promo and remix to boot, if they pull it off then the track could yet make the million mark! In terms of No 2 hits of the decade the song is now second only to “Vienna” and “The Birdie Song” though It should overtake both next week.

Paul McCartney holds at No 3 and increases sales to 167,994 which is the highest sale for a No 3 hit since December 1980 when Jona Lewie sold 183,000, and the Toy Dolls stomp 6-4 selling 155,431 into the bargain. Madonna completes the top 5 bonaza as she gets a boost of 26% week on week to 122,876 even though she falls back 4-5. Gary Glitter reverses 7-8 (56,134) and Paul Young holds at No 9 (54,009) though both post sales increases. The only sales decrease comes for Frankie Goes To Hollywood who retreat 5-6 on a sale of 72,318 bring the total for "Power Of Love" to 423,215 so should clear the half million mark when all told.

Thought 'Shout' was from 1987 for some reason.

Also thought 'Another Rock N Roll Christmas' was 70s. Less said about it the better.

Frog Chorus is very very retro, sounds like something that could be from the start of the charts in the early 50s.

I like most 80s Madonna songs but I don't like 'Like A Virgin', it's a bit cheesy and cringe for me.

That top 10 is unreal a mix of Xmas classics and novelty Xmas songs plus the addition of ‘Shout’ ❤️. Wow those sales are amazing too and a great fact that Jona Lewie sold 183k at no3 in 1980 😍

wow nearly 300K for Wham at #2!!!

Shout is a great add to the top 10

Paul McCartneys sale at no.3 is even bigger than the 161,397 sold by Whitney Houston's It's Not Right But It's Okay at no.3 in March 1999!

5TH JANUARY

So 1984 comes to an end and for the first time ever the charts are actually run for the full 52 weeks and published here for your pleasure, all made possible of course thanks to the computerisation of the charts by Gallup.

No change at the top as “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” completes a month on top though it’s sales are, understandably, well down but a cool 73% to 170,306 copies last week including over 100,000 in the feeding frenzy of Christmas Eve which is covered by this chart. That brings the total to 2,148,630 after 4 weeks, an unthinkable tally in that period just months ago.

In any other year the achievements of Wham!’s “Last Christmas/ Everything She Wants” would have been notable but it had exceptional competition this year. It stays at No 2 for a fourth week behind Band Aid but still managed to post a six figure sales haul, just, at 110,772 which puts its own monthly tally at 838,899, now officially the best-selling No 2 hit of the 80s

Paul McCartney holds for a third week at No 3 though he dips below the 100,000 mark at 73,746 and a total that is just shy of half a million outstripping both “Pipes Of Peace” and “No More Lonely Nights” with only “Ebony & Ivory” ahead of it in terms of his solo work.

Madonna and Toy Dolls exchange places as they clock in with sales of 72,301 and 66,436 respectively and outside the top 5 there are climbers, Ray Parker Jr moves 7-6 (40,018) and Tears For Fears jump 10-8 (29,580), Those that stick, Paul Young at No 9 (27,761) and those that fall, Frankie goes To Hollywood 6-7 (37,196). Regardless all lose sales.

Then of course there is one new song in the big 10, it’s been three years since their last 40 hit “Waiting For A Girl like You” but Foreigner end the barren spell with their new single “I Want To Know What Love Is” which climbs 11-10 (25,823) and is the lead single from their fifth album “Agent Provocateur”. Despite a long history this is only the group’s forth trip into the top 40

1- DO THEY KNOW IT’S CHRISTMAS- Band Aid (170,306)

2- EVERYTHING SHE WANTS/ LAST CHRISTMAS- Wham! (110,772)

^ those entire top 5 sales are eye-watering, wow!! I knew that 'We All Stand Together' was a huge selling #3 on top of that massive top 2 but didn't know about Toy Dolls and Madge on 6 figures too.

Just been catching up on the past couple of weeks now my laptop is fixed and 'Shout' has definitely been my favourite new addition in that time

Fab work as always Gezza!

Crazy sales to end the year - Madonna selling almost 400k in 5 weeks and Toy Dolls almost 300k in 3 weeks, without either reaching the Top 3!

Thanks Gezza, fantastic presentation and detail as always!
