40+ number ones :o

It's really true "stan" huge fan things.

"Little Things" is very beautiful. I don't care about chart success, give me this masterpiece in any Christmas day instead Wham, Mariah, Pogues/Kirsty.

With album tracks ABBA possibly could have 20 number ones. "I'm a Marionette" is the one from the most underrated ABBA songs. Grow up very much for me after watching this performance. It's an unpopular opinion, but there is nothing wrong with "The Girl with the Golden Hair" mini-musical.

My top 20 ABBA songs ["Little Things" update]

1. That's Me

2. Honey Honey

3. When All Is Said And Done

4. I Am Just A Girl

5. When I Kissed The Teacher

6. Disillusion

7. Angeleyes

8. Little Things

9. Knowing Me, Knowing You

10. The Winner Takes It All

11. Ring Ring

12. Waterloo

13. Hasta Manana

14. Head Over Heels

15. Nina, Pretty Ballerina

16. Thank You For The Music

17. I'm A Marionette

18. Dream World

19. I Have A Dream

20. Two For The Price Of One

"Ring Ring" (very unpopular opinion again, I love the diversity of songs) and "Arrival" were their best albums. Others had some highlights and some low points.

OK, so on top is the greatest act of all-time. That's my opinion, and that's pretty much historically correct in terms of what they did in a mere 7 years, the impact they had on world music, and their success then and since. If I Hadn't included their solo stuff they wouldnt be top - Pet Shop Boys would be - but then again I wasn't doing charts for most of their career, and half their classics were never singles, so it's pretty much been reissued success in the 21st century that makes up the bulk of this total - so they would no doubt have been higher in that case, so the solo stuff is fair game. It was either that or have the top 10 being dominated by 4 ex-Beatles as I add their solo stuff to the Beatles total, and that didn't make sense. I think its a fair balance as kiddie faves like I Want To Hold Your hand, Cant Buy Me Love, Help! and much more never topped my charts (as they would have had I been doing them as a kiddie).

It also doesnt include solo side projects like Mary Hopkin, cover versions and so on. All Those Years Ago is basically a Beatles record, with George, Ringo & Paul on a song about John, and Photograph is a George/Ringo collab. I'm working on a 1960-to 1968 list of number ones based on the UK charts and my memories of what I loved as a kid on a week by week basis. So how would that affect this chart rundown?

Elvis would have an extra 3 for a total of 9

Roy Orbison would have an extra 2 for a total of 6

Cliff would have 3 more for a total of 8

Gerry & The Pacemakers would have 4

The Beatles would have an extra 8 for a total of 60

Dusty Springfield would have an extra 1 for a total of 9

Val Doonican would have 2

Sandie Shaw would have 3

Jonathan King would have an extra 1 for a total of 4

Tom Jones would have a total of 3

The Seekers would have 2

Peter Sellers would have 2

10CC would have an extra 1 (from The Mindbenders) for a total of 9

Denny Laine/Wings/Mindbenders would have 3

Sonny & Cher would have an extra 1 for a total of 9

Frank Sinatra would have 2

Petula Clark would have 2 more for a total of 4

The Tremeloes would have 3

The Hollies would have 1 extra for a total of 5

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky Mick & Tich would have one extra for a total of 3

The Kinks would have one more for a total of 5

John, huge thanks for this great countdown. Maybe one day I will finish my retro charts  and do the same topic here on Buzzjack.

Deserved # 1. If we will replace PSB with Elvis (who was # 1 star before the start of your charts) that's we will get the most legendary music acts on the top.

Beatles, ABBA, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Elton John. Your chart is like the encyclopedia of the best music from 20th century. There are not any analogues of YVA and Twiggy, who almost nobodies for music fans and critics, but ultimate pop superstars in my hitlist.

Thanks Alex, and look forward to seeing your completed lists and charts - it takes a lot of effort going back and researching! If I did the same and covered the 50's, yes Elvis would be a lot higher too :) The great thing about liking someone who's not well-known is it means they get a bit of an opportunity to not be forgotten :) I've always had a soft spot for Twiggy and she did well to move from 60's iconic model to 70's pop singer

I loved Abba from the moment I saw them and charted everything they released on single, so I think Stanning is fair  The Girl With The Golden Hair could have made part of a pretty good Musical - I think they were just a few years early for it, maybe they should have somehow merged them into the Chess musical and that would have been a lot better, less filler.

Some fairly obscure tracks in your list along with the famous ones which is always nice to see, and I also would rather hear Little Things (and also Happy New Year) than the usual Xmas chart suspects. We should ban them for a year from streaming sites to force people to discover other xmas classics!

ooh yes now there's a gloriously cheesy but beautifully-produced catchy xmas singalong

  • 1 year later...
8 Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood (These Boots Are Made For Walkin', Sand, Somethin' Stupid, You Only Live Twice, Summer Wine, Some Velvet Morning, Did You Ever, My Autumn's Done Come)

Just found it. "Sand" is unknown song for me.

Just found it. "Sand" is unknown song for me.

Sand is special to me - my mum recorded it off the radio in Singapore when I was 12, and I've loved the hippy vibes ever since, so much so that I got it played on Radio One on Simon Mayo's show in the late 80's or early 90's with the story above (we lived next to the armed guard tower of the infamous Changi Prison so I threw that in too), and then did the same on Radio Two Sounds Of The 60's a decade later.
