In 1971, in his dressing room, Elvis receives a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). There have only been five previous recipients of the award: Bing Crosby (for whom it has just been renamed), Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Irving Berlin.

In 1969, Elvis completes his record-breaking Las Vegas engagement with total attendance of 101,500 and gross receipts of $1,522,635. By comparison, Dean Martin has drawn 50,000 to the smaller Riviera in a three-week engagement earlier in the summer. International vice president Alex Shoofey conveys his congratulations on the success of the show, presenting Elvis with an all-expense-paid trip to Hawaii for himself plus eight. :yahoo:

In 1957, Elvis is at the Empire Stadium in Vancouver Canada. The show has to be stopped twice, as the audience surrounds the stage and the Colonel, who has bitterly protested the lax Canadian security arrangements for a crowd of 26,500, pulls Elvis off stage and cautions him to tone down his act. Not surprisingly, Elvis is impervious to suggestion, and tension continues to rise until, in the end, as George Klein recalls,’ the last thing we saw was the stage being turned over.’ :o

In a press conference before the show, Elvis tells reporters that his first love was ‘old colored spirituals.’ He goes on to say, probably with very little exaggeration,’ I know practically every religious song that’s ever been written.’

In 1957, Elvis appears at the Multnomah Stadium in Portland, Oregon. In an interview before the show, he tells reporters,’ There’s nothing more important than love and marriage. I do think that marriage would hurt my career now, though.’ Elvis is able to complete a forty-minute show only after near-riot conditions are quelled by police.

In 1972, the Colonel stages a press conference between the dinner and midnight shows, with Elvis and RCA president Rocco Laginestra both present, to announce the January 14th worldwide satellite broadcast of Aloha From Hawaii. Reporters are told that an estimated 1.4 billion viewers will watch the first entertainment special to be broadcast around the world. (This is not, strictly speaking, true, since a good part of the world, including both Europe and America, will view it on a delayed basis, with America not getting the show for several months.) RCA Record Tours will be the sole producer of the show. RCA will also release a record of the event, ’the first time in the history of the record industry,’ according to the press announcement, that an album will be releases simultaneously on a global basis. This is clearly an event after the Colonel’s heart, and Elvis is left a little speechless. ‘It’s very hard to comprehend,’ he says several times in the course of the press conference, but ‘it’s my favourite part of the business, a live concert.’

In 1970, on Elvis’ final night in Vegas and in the wake of this third record-setting engagement, the International Hotel presents Elvis with a wide, gold belt, similar to a boxing championship belt. It has the hotel logo on it, with stars set with diamonds around the words: ‘World’s Championship/Attendance Record/Las Vegas Nevada/International Hotel.’ The belt is reported to be worth $10,000, and Elvis wears it, from this point on, proudly and often. :cheer:

In 1967, Elvis is at RCA’S Studio B in Nashville, trying out Jerry Reed’s Guitar Man. The musicians find it difficult to replicate Reed’s guitar sound to Elvis’ satisfaction, so Chet Atkin’ secretary, Mary Lynch, tracks down Reed for the session. The resulting song is a triumph of artistry and feeling, and Reed backs up Elvis with great effectiveness on the classic blues Big Boss Man as well.

In 1970, Elvis performed at the Municipal Auditorium, Mobile, Alabama. The group stayed in the Admiral Semmes Hotel just like in 1955. However the hotel was now in such a terrible state that Elvis complained bitterly. When Joe Esposito tried to arrange something else to stay, he was told there was no other room available. Before ending the tour, Elvis gave out bonuses to each of the guys. Even after deducting the Colonel's share Elvis made more then $174,000 on this 6 day tour.

In 1962, filming resumed at MGM Studios in Hollywood. And Elvis had a long interview with Lloyd Shearer on the set.

Elvis spoke of all the friends surrounding him. He was stating: " it is important to surround yourself with people who can give you a little happiness". He also spoke about his interest in studying philosophy and mentioned that he would liked to become a doctor and often read medical texts. He said that he was hesitant to make any major changes in his career ( " If I can entertain people with things I'm doing, well, I'd be a fool to tamper with it " ), but at the same time expressed an interest in exploring new directions.
