Also in 1935, a devastating tornado swept through Tupelo, killing 235 and injuring another 350. In Presley family lore, it will always be remembered how Vernon and Gladys took refuge in Jessie and Minnie Mae’s home, with Gladys holding her baby tight.

I visited the cemetery in Tupelo and saw a grave which held 12 family members who had perished during the tornado. How very different the story of Rock’n’Roll would have been had the Presley family suffered the same fate.

1953 - The Humes High School band presented its annual Minstrel Show at 8.00 p.m. in the auditorium, with Elvis the 16th listed act on the bill, as "Guitarist.....Elvis Presley". Both Elvis and his class mates dated this as the beginning of his rise of fame. According to Elvis: "I wasn't popular in school. I wasn't dating anybody. And then they entered me in this talent show, and I came out and did my "Till I Waltz Again With You" by Teresa brewer. It was amazing how popular I became after that".

Elvis’ 1954 Cadillac has been driven to Lubbock for use on this tour. Vernon makes out an application for automobile liability insurance, naming Elvis Presley, a ‘professional singer,’ as his employer. On the form Vernon lists a 1956 Plymouth station wagon owned by him and a 1954 Cadillac convertible and 1955 Cadillac Fleetwood owned by Elvis. It is estimated that the two Cadillacs will be driven 100,000 miles in the next year, divided between Scotty Moore (30,000 miles), Bill Black, D.J.Fontana and Bobby (Red) West (20,000 each) and Elvis (the remainder).

Lionel Crane of the London Daily Mirror is on the scene and reports that Elvis wore a plum-coloured jacket with black trousers as two armed guards escorted him to the stage. He is greeted with a ‘scream that I thought would split the roof.’ Afterwards, in the dressing room, when asked about the reception, Elvis declares,’ It makes me want to cry. How does all this happen to me?’ He then shows off his horseshoe ring and boasts that he owns forty suits and twenty-seven pairs of shoes. :cheer:

1956 – Municipal Auditorium, Amarillo, Texas

After two shows here, it marks the beginning of a two-day break in a tour that will stick in Scotty Moore’s memory as the time the crowd noise became so loud the musicians could no longer hear the music. ‘We were the only band in history that was directed by an ass. It was like being in a sea of sound.’

Elvis’ booking at the New Frontier in Las Vegas is confirmed, and confirmed and the Colonel suggests he be billed as ‘America’s Only Atomic Powered Singer.’

The chartered flight that Elvis and the band take to Nashville for a one-day recording session set up at the last minute by Steve Sholes is plagued with problems. First the pilot loses his way and has to land in El Dorado, Arkansas, to refuel. The one of the engines cuts out because the plane has not been switched over to its full tank. ‘Man, I don’t know if I will ever fly again,’ Elvis announces when he arrives in Nashville.

1956 and after a dreadful flight, only one song is recorded in three hours at the session at RCA’s Nashville studio. The ballad that is cut is I Want You, I Need You, I Love You and it will become the A-side of Elvis’ second RCA single.

While at the studio, Elvis is presented with a gold record for Heartbreak Hotel and immediately after the session, Elvis and the band take a bumpy flight to Memphis on the same chartered plane. In the evening, Elvis stops by Dewey Phillips’ Red, Hot and Blue radio show on the mezzanine floor of the Hotel Chisca.

1955 and Elvis tops the bill at The Big ‘D’ Jamboree at the Sportatorium in Dallas, Texas. The bill includes rising country star Sonny James, veteran Hayride performer Hank Locklin, Charlene Arthur and many others. Like the Grand Ole Opry and the Louisiana Hayride, Ed McLemore’s Big ‘D’ Jamboree in Dallas is a live Saturday night show broadcast over a prominent local radio station with a strong signal. It serves as an important vehicle to expose Elvis to listeners across Texas and Bob Neal arranges for four appearances on the show, despite the fact that Elvis will have to pay a substantial penalty for missed Hayride shows. At this time Neal also commits Elvis to do two Beaumont, Texas shows in June with the same promoter.

1956 – Venus Room, New Frontier Hotel, Las Vegas

Elvis opens a two-week engagement in front of a more jaded, older audience. In 1959 Elvis will recall,’ After that first night, I went outside and just walked around in the dark. It was awful…….I wasn’t getting across to the audience.’ At the same time, he falls in love with Las Vegas and is thrilled to meet such show business legends as Johnnie Ray and Liberace. He catches a number of other shows, including that of Freddie Bell and the Bellboys, whose novelty performance of Big Mama Thornton’s hit, Hound Dog, impresses him as a potential showstopper.

In 1955 Elvis began a 5 day tour with artists from TNT Records at M-B Corral, Wichita Falls, Texas. When each artist had finished his performance Elvis left for Seymour, an hour away, for a second performance but didn't arrive before midnight because he ran out of gas and money. The hardcore Elvis fans were still waiting for him when he finally got on stage at the High School, Seymour, Texas. For a long moment Elvis just stood there with his eyes closed, not saying a word and Scotty stepped up behind Elvis, pretending to wind him up. With that, Elvis grabbed his guitar and the show was on.
