Posted September 7, 20231 yr I entered the following prompt into ChatGPT Can you provide me with a list of 20 obscure cult albums from the 90s that were critically acclaimed including 5 each from pop, indie, dance music and r'n'b? The following list was provided B12 - Time Tourist Codeine - The White Birch D'Angelo - Brown Sugar FSOL - Dead Cities Groove Theory - Groove Theory LFO - Sheath Lush - Split Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend Maxwell - Urban Hang Suite Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See Me'Shell NdegéOcello - Plantation Lullabies My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - Sexplosion! Saint Etienne - Foxbase Alpha Scanner - Mass Observation Sunscreem - Change or Die System 7 - 777 Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque The Beloved - Happiness Tony! Toni! Toné! - Sons of Soul Tricky - Pre-Millennium Tension All these albums are available to listen to on Spotify. I think it could be interesting if we were to take an album each month to listen to in our own time and then come back to this thread for a discussion or perhaps a listen through, depending on what you guys would prefer. Any suggestions or ideas? Going through the list, I only own one album - Pre-Millennial Tension and I dont think I ever listened to it. I'm also familiar with D'Angelo Future Sound of London LFO Lush Maxwell Mazzy Star Saint Etienne Sunscreem Teenage Fanclub The Beloved Tony! Toni! Toné! But haven't listened to their albums on the list.
September 9, 20231 yr I own 4/5 of those, all are pretty good, St Etienne, The Beloved, Lush, Teenage Fanclub the Tricky one I don't like much, Maxinquaye is on another league always wanted to listen to that Mazzy Star one...
September 10, 20231 yr Saint Etienne I know and have listened to a lot. It’s good but I wouldn’t class it as their best from the 90s, the follow ups So Tough and Tiger Bay were better imo. I’ve heard the ones from Beloved, Mazzy Star, FSOL and Tricky before but can’t remember that much about them. Teenage Fanclub is the one that I’m most interested in as the other two albums I’m familiar with from them are pretty good. I’d be happy to just have random.org choose one though
September 10, 20231 yr just been to a record store and been tempted by the 3 Lush albums, which seem to have been re-released in pretty vinyl just realised I own album 1 (Spooky) on cassette ;D and album 3 (Lovelife) on Cd but don't own album 2 (Split) I also randomly noticed album 2 has a track called Lovelife, which then ended up being the title of album 3
September 13, 20231 yr Foxbase Alpha is a great one. I vaguely remember hearing Bandwagonesque a couple of years back. Might revisit it someday
