"A Bar Song (Tipsy)" is #1 for a second week. You know what they say, the chart is very equilibrium based so once you get to the top spot, it's hard to naturally be unseated. This flies in the face of the very rapid turn around at the top lately but I posit that in the past month there hasn't been much in the way of that constant stream of new smash hits. You may have forgotten that the Bubbling Under section exists in this thread, as it's gone AWOL for 10 weeks straight, to the point that the bottom song on the New Music chart has often been in the top 30 lately! That might be changing soon as the crop of new hits that ushered in this era are all about to age out of it. "i like the way you kiss me", "Too Sweet" and "Slow It Down" are all leaving it this week. Eminem's new album should fill in the gaps next week but I can't say for sure they'll be sticking around. There's not much else to talk about this week. We've got a handful of debuts, it's a first time on the chart for BabyTron, but in keeping with the chart slow down, none are especially zooming up the chart right now. Yes it is very funny that "360" actually managed to debut 2 weeks after I thought it wasn't going to. Billie Eilish returns to #1 for a 5th week. Zach Bryan still can't make the stars align. His self-titled album entered at #2 behind a re-issue, now he's stuck still unable to match the lingering streams of these two months old albums. If you're a fan of neat little patterns and I'm sure you are, then you'll be delighted to know that all of last week's debuts dropped out of the top 50, and nothing else. I don't think that will happen again next week but we also only have two debuts. For the other one, if you ever want to make a throwaway joke about an artist who keeps changing their stage name but don't want to talk about that guy anymore, then I present Eves Karydas because it's the 4th name she's put out music under. I'm actually surprised to realise that this is her first top 50 album because I would've guessed her previous album entered in the top 10 but I digress. I'm going to digress even further because it presents me an opportunity to highlight the state of the industry in a way that's judgemental to you, strawman. Eves was signed to a major label in 2014. She never really hit it big but her early singles did pretty well on the iTunes chart, and a couple more since then have gotten certifications. In 2022 she posted an essay on Instagram about her experience as a woman in the music industry. About how she was essentially forced to objectify herself to be marketable and would spend more time working on that than actually making music. Definitely worth a read and worth doing some self-reflection as to whether or not you are more likely to listen to music made by a woman if she's physically attractive and whether you're a cog in that supposedly sexist music industry that is equally just reciprocating the whims of its buyers. She ended the post by announcing that she was going independent, and she has done so for this album with no label or manager. As literally the only Australian album in the top 50 this week, this can be seen as a success I think. I've been enjoying recently. I don't do much parasocial media so I mostly don't know what they look like. Your favourite pop star is not going to ever be romantically linked to you, I'm sorry. Also if you feel slighted by this strawman, I apologise. But to re-iterate, it's very valuable to self-reflect on these things, I know I have. Oh and Teddy Swims is currently in the country. That's why his album re-entered and he's gonna climb even more next week.

Back in 2019 it seemed as though the 24 week reign of "Dance Monkey" was a sign of the times going forward. 2024 seems to disagree because we've had 11 different #1 hits in about the same time frame. Maybe this is our new song to break this trend in the same way, just being slightly ahead of the competition for an extended period. Billie Eilish has started to dethrone him on Spotify, but Apple & iTunes are gonna require a much bigger margin to make it over the line. Eminem arrives with many new entries this week. With 13 songs in the top 50, it's the most he's ever simultaneously charted, but in 2018 he actually managed more debuts at once, with 12 new entries that week. My interesting anecdote of this is that "Guilty Conscience" actually never charted in Australia back in the day, so if you were simply following the top 50 without any outsider influence, you'd have no clue what this song is supposed to be a sequel to. You might not even know that the music video (but not the album version) has narration from the iconic Robert Culp. What's your favourite Columbo performance from him? Mine has got to be "Double Exposure" for the quintessential cat-and-mouse game that it is. The scene where he avoids implicating himself by driving to a not-yet-revealed murder location gets me every time. Ice Spice also debuts this week and for the first time ever, she has the first name on a charting entry. Sadly Australian music listeners are not even the fart, much less the shit. Also remember last week when I said that the Bubbling Under chart was on the verge of returning? This week was a massive boon in that as the bottom song on the New Music chart is #43 this week, with only 1 further eligible song in the top 50. Eminem might clear some space next week, but he's also contributing strongly to that chart so it might just cancel out in a couple of weeks. Eminem scores his 11th #1 album this week. You may also be willing to call it his 12th #1 album if you include the "8 Mile" soundtrack, but I'll leave that up to you. The mass exodus of his tracks on the streaming charts suggests a relatively short stay but he's probably good for a second week at least. In what can only be described as a massive plot twist, Clairo who has never made the top 50 before, now arrives at #4. This means that I've never had the chance to put a dreadfully bad joke in this column that causes everyone to walk out the door with their bags. Or to extend my fascination of how much Claire Rosinkranz's "don't miss me" sounds like a parody version of her fellow Claire's recently released "Amoeba". Anyway I need to get around to listening to this album because I heard an album track from it on the radio the other day that sounded pretty good but I don't remember what it was called. Anyway, this week's ACTUAL AUSTRALIAN CONTENT comes in threes, and somewhat different threes but also not really. It's not often that an Australian artist can surpass the tall-poppy syndrome (or the 'who?' syndrome) of our online comment sections, but there is genuinely quite a bit of enthusiasm for the hardcore group Speed. They had a top 5 EP a couple of years ago and now have a top 10 album. Also this week, I have often lamented the fact that the Australian hip-hop canon in the charts kind of just stopped building after around 2014, or just when The Kid LAROI decided to stop rapping. Anyway, we do have the return of Complete this week. Back in 2019 he had a #12 album, which has a song with 47 million plays on Spotify, real Hilltop Hoods numbers. He doesn't have that viral hit around this time but he does return to the top 50 this week. Lastly there's In Hearts Wake sneaking through. A Far cry from their frequent top 5 appearances but we take what we can get nowadays. In the midst of this, Griff & Cigarettes After Sex make their first appearances. Wouldn't have guessed they'd be in that order but whaddaya know.

The threat of Billie Eilish getting to #1 is slightly more pronounced this week as she's actually #2 now, but still doesn't seem to be slimming the margin fast enough to get there next week. The top 15 seems to be incapable of receiving new hits lately so maybe she'll eventually benefit from lack of competition. Or maybe a new #1 hit will drop tomorrow? You just never know. On the other hand, it's so especially pronounced this week that we have zero debuts, just a few could've been debuts if they didn't already sneak in two weeks ago. The chart is almost a 1:1 of two weeks ago with all of Eminem's debuts dropping out and largely replaced by the songs he pushed out last week. Ironically one of his lowest entries last week, "Somebody Save Me", is now his second highest song, probably just outside of the top 50. It's all still enough for him to retain the #1 spot on the album chart for a second week. As every song from the album bar "Houdini" has left the Spotify top 200, I suspect Billie Eilish & Taylor Swift will retain their standings as the streaming giants doing the biggest numbers again and overtake him. Can never be totally sure if that's what gets to #1 though, because I never really know how big incoming debuts are gonna be. Maybe that's on me, because this is the 3rd time that Stray Kids have debuted at #2, putting them in rare air that might allow me to compare them to Radiohead if they do it again. Also this week, Glass Animals return with their highest charting album ever. Australia is the only country where all of their albums have made the top 20. Halfway to achieving that feat this week is TV Girl. A big rush of vinyl sales for their catalogue gives them their first ever chart appearances here, as two of their albums debut in the top 20. Jimin gets his first ever album chart entry, reaching the base appeal in Australia of the letters 'MUSE' in all-caps. We've got the increasingly rare treat of a new movie soundtrack to continue that time capsule, and also Childish Gambino is back with his latest curious pivot.

If you're looking for change, well you might get it next week. Billie Eilish continues to trim away at the lead and looks to be right in the mix next week. Alternatively we have the new debut chaos that's hard to predict so maybe Charli XCX will just debut at #1? Actually if you want to put maybes around, maybe she'll have 2 debuts next week. It has occurred to me that "Apple" still isn't on the ARIA Chart, maybe next week they'll do something about that. In any case, she'll certainly end that hegemony of the same songs in the top 15 we've had for months. If you need more proof, Post Malone can't quite debut in there this week. He seems to be driven by a strong sales week as the song only got to #24 on the Spotify chart. It's also the only debut we've had in the last 2 weeks. This means I'm once again teasing the possibility of the return of the Bubbling Under chart, but probably not next week. As I'm probably going to loudly edit into the subheader after I post this, 🚨🚨 AUSTRALIAN #1 ALBUM ALERT 🚨🚨. We have not had an Australian at #1 on either chart all year until now. Getting that honour is the 3rd album for Lime Cordiale. If you recall, their 2nd album also debuted at #1 and had an egregious number of singles that preceded it and ensured it a strong streaming fortune for months to come. This one also has a similar situation as it already has 5 triple j Hottest 100 entries on it. Ominously, only the title track is sitting in their top 6 tracks right now according to last.fm, so it's probably not going to hang around quite as long unless Americans decide it's really funny that there's a song called "Imposter Syndrome". Despite the rumours that they only ever made 2 songs, Empire Of The Sun return with their 4th album which maintains their run of hitting the top 10 with every one of them. I also tempted fate last week as we've now got 2 new soundtrack albums in the chart. One from Ghost, and yet another MCU one. I'm currently engaging in a slow Clockwork Orange-like experience of watching all of those MCU films for the first time so if there's still any life left in me, maybe I'll have a quippy remark about it next time.

Kendrick Lamar A huge week for Charli XCX. After registering 0 sales last week, "Apple" has managed to jump right into the top 20 in a near unprecedented sales acceleration for a song that's been out for 2 months. Also "Guess" is at #1. For those who are interested in that sort of thing, I can personally guarantee that Billie Eilish was not credited when the chart first dropped on Friday afternoon but at some point since then she's been added to that, so now she can only blame herself for blocking herself. As the first week sales calm down, it's possible that "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" could grab the top spot next week, but still too close to call with 3 days left to go. Hanumankind & Kalmi both burst into the top 20 this week. It's the sort of entry that has you wondering who the highest charting Indian artist is until you remember that A.R. Rahman had a #1 single in 2009. I can't believe I'm doing this in back to back weeks but I must once again subject you to 🚨🚨 AUSTRALIAN #1 ALBUM ALERT 🚨🚨. I also must issue a warning to anyone who makes it part of their personality to become a raging sociopath that has to remind everyone that they really don't like a song that came out over 5 years ago that Tones And I has a second #1 album. Fortunately I haven't seen too much of that recently. This one doesn't seem to be linked with NFTs either, hurrah! This week also has huge news for Australian men in their 40s. Not only are Carlton temporarily out of the 8 (lol), but there's a new collaborative album from Bernard Fanning and Paul Dempsey. If you don't fall roughly into that age group, then I'll let you know that Bernard Fanning is from Powderfinger, probably the highest selling band domestically in the last 30 years, and Paul Dempsey is from Something For Kate, who are not the highest selling band domestically in the last 30 years but they are probably one of the best, and Paul is possibly the tallest man in Australian music. Notably, Something For Kate have never won an ARIA Award and they probably have Powderfinger to blame for snatching them in their stead. No bad blood then obviously. Once upon a time, Dune Rats were at #1 with a self-deprecating album title. This week they're at #29 with a self-deprecating album title. Also imagine telling someone in 2019 that Khalid would soon only barely debut ahead of a month old Clairo album. Lastly we've got Allday scoring his 6th top 50 album, which also contributes to the shocking chart moment as Luke Combs' second album has finally fallen out of the top 50 for the first time ever. This means that "folklore" is now the longest charting album to have never dropped out. Pretty wild considering it was sitting at #49 on the chart 2 years ago. ARIA have also swung an axe to the CCR compilation after about a year of just chilling on the chart.

Most of that has happened so far for "BIRDS OF A FEATHER", notably the important part of getting to #1. Billie Eilish is technically replacing herself at #1, which hasn't happened on the singles chart since Drake did so in 2018, with "God's Plan" and "Nice For What" as you'd expect. Taylor Swift also did this twice on the album chart this year in permutations that you have no reason to recall. Belatedly we've got a re-entry for *NSYNC. If they were on last week's chart, I could've said that this week's top 35 is the same as last week's top 35 in a slightly different order. But wait, the chart isn't that boring, we've got an actual debut. From Chase & Status no less, who I have it on good authority have never charted in Australia before now. The significant different commercial viability of drum & bass is usually one of the key differences between Australia and New Zealand's charts, even today. Gracie Abrams also has a new entry. I apologise if anyone finds the emojis overbearing but I didn't expect I'd have to be hoisting them for a 3rd week in a row. 🚨🚨 AUSTRALIAN #1 ALBUM ALERT 🚨🚨. Amy Shark becomes the latest artist to continue their #1 album streak in spite of diminished returns on the singles chart. She's gone one better than the other two as she's got 3 #1 albums now. She leads a week of what must be the most Australian content we've gotten all year. 6 albums in the top 50, that's almost halfway to the quota that we're supposed to be getting. Though she's not directly responsible for it, Amy Shark getting to #1 means that Grinspoon continue their run of never being able to get there. I remember them having an interview on the radio over a decade ago (uh oh) that they had a habit of constantly releasing against the wrong competition and not getting there, but they've only actually had two #2 albums. beabadoobee continues to re-write history into convincing people that maybe she gave Powfu a hit with her own influence as she scores her first ever top 10 album. Then we go back to Australian artists without a #1 album, I'd say how many King Gizz are up to but it might go out of date by the time I hit 'Add reply'. Also debuting this week are the Australian trio 3% with their first album. There's three of them but also 3% is roughly the percentage of Australians who are Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders. Just the other day I was thinking about how I don't see many football references in Australian music lately but the album cover re-creates Nicky Winmar's iconic shirt lift from 1993. Speaking of Indigenous Australians, The Kid LAROI also returns with his most recent album boosted by some more tracks. In case you were wondering, "NIGHTS LIKE THIS PT. 2" was not combined otherwise he'd be a bit higher on the singles chart this week. At #27 this week is the first album from DICE, who are not only from Western Australia but my support worker has played with them on occasion so I have a conflict of interest when I say I think they're pretty good. Lastly Calvin Harris enters with an album that will potentially drop very, very slowly. Also remember when I said that Luke Combs had the longest charting album without dropping out until it dropped out? There's a secondary version of that because Elton John's "Diamonds" has spent the most weeks in a row on the chart at present on a re-entry. By dropping down to #40, it's the lowest position it's been in over 5 years, so maybe it's at risk as well.

I do not think it will be #1 next week but I can't say for sure what will replace it. I suspect it could be any of three songs by a certain Saffron City gym leader with a penchant for woodwork. This week's chart gives a good argument to say that it could be "Taste" though because arriving in the top 10 this week is Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars, who spent the first two days of the week at #76 and #43 on Spotify, adding to my recent feeling that something has changed in the system to help debuts get a better impression than they once did (it may be YouTube). I neglected to mention last week but isn't it interesting that 7 of the top 8 have gone to #1? Also isn't it interesting that "Apple" definitely debuted at #18, and has spent its entire chart run at that position. She's got a long way to go to match the funny chart run moments of LunchMoney Lewis or Mumford & Sons. Not much else to note except for Mark Ambor being on fraud watch. We have gotten very close to returning the classic Bubbling Under segment though. "WILDFLOWER" is #20 on the New Music chart this week leaving very little space to hide, and perhaps next week's chart shake up could get us there. Cold Chisel score their 6th #1 album this week with a compilation. I will never stop my tradition of blurting out 🚨🚨 AUSTRALIAN #1 ALBUM ALERT 🚨🚨 until maybe next week probably. It gives me the opportunity to point out that when I say Jimmy Barnes has more #1 albums than anyone else, I'm not even including these 6 albums in the tally, and it also gives me the opportunity to say yes, that Jimmy Barnes, the cowboy screaming in the clouds guy. It means that once again, Post Malone is denied a #1 album, still only having two to his name from the 2010s. If you take a shot at the king, you best not miss. Also entering this week is Melbourne trio Telenova. They've been putting out some pleasantly catchy singles for several years now (big fan of and myself). I am less familiar with The Southern River Band despite the fact that they're from the same city as me in Perth, but they also sneak through to get their first ever entry.

Also for the first time in many months, we have a Bubbling Under chart again. It's not much right now but expect it to grow in the coming weeks.

Don't expect that to change any time soon. It is receding back to the pack, but it could do that for weeks and go unchallenged. The interesting one to note in the Sabrina Carpenter affairs is "Bed Chem" which manages to climb into the top 10 on its second week, and is generally holding pretty steady even in its 3rd week. Perhaps greater hit potential in the pipeline. I didn't get a chance to say last week that "The Door" is sneaking into the top 50 with help from the points provided by the CYRIL remix, but it's getting pretty close to the point where I'd say that it could get there without it. Gigi Perez scores a first top 50 hit. I don't have anything to say on that but it should keep climbing next week. Once again the Bubbling Under expands. We're gonna lose all of Billie Eilish's tracks next week so it's really gonna push the depths. As a bonus, we have a song that actually could be considered Bubbling Under, as The Kid LAROI comes through with "BABY I'M BACK". It doesn't look like it's gonna make the top 50 next week so I'll just say that this is a particularly Australian coded interpolation. Not just because the Player song "Baby Come Back" gets used memorably on The Simpsons, but also because Ocean Alley once covered the song for Like A Version and it was a particularly popular one. I wouldn't normally leap at the chance to promote international artists on an Australian entry, but I just have to point out how distracting the title is, as one of my favourite songs released last year is "BABY I'M HOME" by Odetari, Kanii & 9lives. Future classic I'm sure. Sabrina Carpenter is also #1 on the album chart for a second week. Once again we are robbed of an Australian artist at #1. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have had two #1 albums in the past. It's the only debut this week, but we are treated to a new peak with Oasis's re-release. Though it had a lengthy chart run, "Definitely Maybe" only peaked at #23. Improving to #10 this week, now every Oasis studio album has hit the top 10. Luke Combs also gets a proper physical release that sees him back in the top 50.

The previous comment about it not being challenged continues to be true, except now it's not even really catching back up to the pack, we could be here a while. If you're here for insightful and interesting Linkin Park takes, I don't have it. I haven't even listened to it yet. I can say that it's their first top 30 hit since 2009's "New Divide", following a run of 6 straight top 50 hits that didn't quite get that high. It's the only new entry this week too, but we should have some more next week too that I still haven't listened to. My excuse is that if labels are willing to screw over the midnight Australia market for their big deal releases then they have to face the microscopic consequence that I'll miss them on my New Music Friday listen throughs, tipping the scales with a pebble that will surely make them stop doing this. Anyway the Bubbling Under chart just got bigger again. It's done so in a very funny way because "Close To You" and "28" are actually debuts to this chart. Despite the former reaching #34 on the chart about 3 months ago, it never quite squeezed in. Now it's much lower and manages to get through. Hoist your klaxons because it's back, and I ain't talkin' about a Thomas Pynchon novel. I'm talking about 🚨🚨 AUSTRALIAN #1 ALBUM ALERT 🚨🚨, and this time it's a 4th #1 album for Missy Higgins. Famous for a style of singing that would probably not please Henry Higgins (although he does like a challenge), she hit #1 with ease with her first 3 albums. That was roughly 10-20 years ago and she's constantly not come close to the top since. She just performed "Scar" at triple j's One Night Stand concert with G Flip though so the nostalgia cycle is back, baby. You might actually also know that song even if you're not Australian, because it's the aggressively Australian song that gets slotted into The Axis Of Awesome's "4 Chords" song, and I bet I've made this exact same reference when one of her other albums has charted. Or to make this more modern and quickly dated, I guess we making triangles squeeze through circles now. After some mysterious circumstances where Fred again.. charted out of sync with the New Zealand charts (and very out of sync with the UK), he's back and charting ever-so-slightly higher than ever, this time at #3. David Gilmour also debuts in the top 10. 9 years ago Lana Del Rey stopped him from hitting #1. I forget what band he's from. Laufey gets yet another vinyl boost, while Vance Joy gets a minor one too. I say minor because he's always charting just a bit shy of the chart anyway, but this boost will keep him away from recurrency rules for a long while yet. Also I'm going to readily assume that there aren't any GWS Giants fans reading this and so I can safely say holy shit how good was the footy on the weekend?

It has resumed declining which will open up the door for "Die With A Smile". That's on the upswing with a new peak this week and has the power of margin slimming sales on its side. It'll probably take at least another week of catch up though. As a frequent user of Microsoft Excel, I love the way Tate McRae has capitalised her new song which comes in hot at #14. It looks pretty steady at the moment but maybe it'll get the shot in the arm needed to go top 10 eventually. I have less faith in The Weeknd, who has debuted in the top 20 but already dropped out of the Spotify top 50. He is supposed to be coming to Australia eventually but given his last cancellation, the buzz isn't super high right now. We've sort of got Australian content as Charli XCX is assisted by Troye Sivan to another top 50 hit, with a song that shares its title with a George Maple song. Speaking of Australian song titles, Addison Rae gets her first ever top 50 entry. Back in 2020, "Addison Rae" was the title of one of The Kid LAROI's first hits. By an amusing coincidence, she has landed next to The Kid LAROI for two weeks in a row, as last weeks' Bubbling Under with this week's LW data confirms they were #51 & #52 last week. The Kid LAROI is still on the Bubbling Under chart but now he's girt by Playboi Carti & Teddy Swims, two artists I'm sure have a lot of fanbase crossover, who will both probably tumble next week. On the album chart, Sabrina Carpenter gets a 3rd week at #1. We see a fairly rare instance of a physical rebound buoyed by CDs and not vinyl as Eminem returns to #2. I could've sworn he had a vinyl release already but maybe they've been delayed and he's gonna get another decent showing at some point in the future. Oddly enough, Laufey actually climbed to #1 on the vinyl chart this week despite declining on the overall chart. Imagine if she could just get everyone to buy the album on the same week. In my experience with encountering new artists in the 2020s, I'd have put a fairly solid bet on Keshi being Australian an Surf Trash being American, but I would be so wrong as to be backwards on that call. Also I once again get to experience the anticipation of the Brisbane Lions playing in the AFL Grand Final, hopefully with a win this time. I can relate this to music because amidst all the very brave declarations on the quality of Katy Perry's new album, she'll be performing at the event, and given the perennial nature of "Teenage Dream" on the album chart, we'll probably see the effect. It will be mildly funny if she ends up performing "Roar" and "Dark Horse", the former is self-explanatory given the Lions' theme song ends with a mighty roar (I'll also note that there is a Tigers team and they finished in last place, oops), and the latter is funny because the Sydney Swans coach who will also be in the grand final is nicknamed 'Horse', although arguably the Lions are the dark horse here. Also it's funny because did I ever mention that "Dark Horse" never charted in Australia? I'm sure I did. Anyway, peep the #AFLGrandFinal hashtag on Saturday if you want to see Australian Gen Xers & Boomers give their thoughts on Katy Perry, and see if she actually performs something from her new album.

In case you were wondering though, Katy Perry's last 3 albums have debuted at #2, and given that she was just here, maybe this one won't collapse so dramatically.

It'll be #1 again next week I'm pretty sure. The other interesting Sabrina Carpenter thing going on here is that despite quite a bit of chaos in the positions of some of her entries, "Bed Chem" has managed to sit at a peak of #10 for a 5th consecutive week. There's a decent chance it'll land there again, as The Weeknd's "Timeless" is the big competition. It's dwindled in other countries, but The Weeknd is currently touring Australia so that's combatting the anchor. "Take Me To Church" has been a streaming behemoth for quite some time, but this week it actually manages to get back into the top 50 for the first time since 2015. Hozier will be in the country soon so it could get even higher. Sabrina Carpenter has a 5th week at #1 on the album chart. Most of the album is still on the Spotify chart so that sets a bar that's hard to beat. Maybe Coldplay can do it? The British band that can't is Bring Me The Horizon, whose full physical release brings them to a new peak of #2 (prev. #4). We've also got the ominous arrival of that Ed Sheeran collection, and get to anticipate what the week 2 & week 3 movement will be. In saying that, Foo Fighters' "Essential" album just fell out of the top 50 for the first time since debuting 2 years ago, so you can't always overestimate the longevity (as I eye the teetering "Diamonds"). Also I suspect you're familiar with the words 'Taylor's Version', what if I told you that Australia can do this as well. In 2014, The Amity Affliction reached their highest high of popularity, you could even say the same for metalcore. Not before or since have we ever seen songs that dominate digital sales over and over again (The Amity Affliction have three top 30 singles). The second of their 4 consecutive #1 albums, "Let The Ocean Take Me" was a massive success that spent 5 months in the top 50. Thanks to industry rule #4080, the band see very little profit from its sales (your target of ire this time is Roadrunner Records), and so they have re-recorded it. There's also a new peak for Chappell Roan in the top 5 (prev. #4). I'm not quite as familiar with the next Australian debut which is Posseshot at #21. I do know of The Rions who previously won triple j's Unearthed High competition allowing them to hit the big stage before even graduating. They've been putting out music for a few years now and get their first charting album. Also Alex Warren sneaks into the top 50 with one of those albums that has a lot of singles and suspiciously low streams for the few remaining deep cuts. He's on the rise though so hard to say where this album is gonna generally reside.

If you are waiting with bated breath for the week where I say it's probably done, you'll have to come back another time because there still isn't anything making a challenge. Again the more important Sabrina news is that "Bed Chem" is #10 for a 6th consecutive week. This far exceeds the benchmark for this which has always been WSTRN's "In2", which if you remember that song, you might remember it spent 4 weeks at its #10 peak. The song will probably decline this week as "Sailor Song" and "I Love You, I'm Sorry" may well overtake it. Or a Charli XCX song? I don't have the capacity to keep up with these things without midweeks so you'll find out with me. In a move that potentially has ACR in shambles, two fairly ancient top 50 entries in "Slow It Down" and "NIGHTS LIKE THIS" both manage new peaks this week. Speaking of The Kid LAROI, I forgot to fire up the NEW AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON last week for "BABY I'M BACK", which benefitted from a belated Hot Hits Australia appearance to finally get over the line. This is an extremely Australian coded sample of Player's "Baby Come Back" because in addition to Ocean Alley's very popular cover of it (certified Gold 4 years ago by ARIA), it's of course used as hold music for the Department Of Missing Babies in Season 3 of The Simpsons. Anyway, in order to repent my mistake, I've been enjoying lately. Look at those view counts, you could be the hippest cat in town if you got in on this. Or if you just want to embrace familiarity, the definitely Australian band Crowded House have returned to the top 50 for the first time in nearly 2 decades, with their notedly popular "Don't Dream It's Over". Speaking of embrace, Ndotz also makes an ARIA debut this week. Sabrina Carpenter has a 6th week at #1 on the album chart. This means that Codpay finally complete their name with a second L. In 2015 they were unable to unseat incumbent Adele, and once again it's an incumbent who blocks them. All of their studio albums have peaked in the top 2 though. This is also just the second of their albums to not net a top 50 hit although I believe "feelslikeimfallinginlove" was quite close on debut. Earlier this year, Stormzy made a strange declaration of an insult on the ARIA Albums Chart, I'm sure you remember. The ARIA Albums Chart has finally responded in kind and now does in fact have a "Backbone", courtesy of Kasey Chambers. Kasey Chambers was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame a few years back which is a rare feat because the selection committee has largely skipped over much of the '90s. Silverchair, Powderfinger, You Am I, Savage Garden, Something For Kate? Not in the ARIA Hall of Fame. Gotta make room for Jet instead. That said, Kasey Chambers' success is largely in the 2000s where she scored 4 #1 albums and a #1 single in "Not Pretty Enough", the goal song of The Big O, Oscar McInerney who tragically missed out on a premiership medal last month when he dislocated his shoulder twice in the preliminary final. Kasey got a 5th #1 album in 2017 and this is her highest chart position since then. On the topic of '90s legends who absolutely should be in the ARIA Hall Of Fame, I'd be remiss not to bring up TISM. You might know them as that band that everyone keeps insisting should go to Eurovision. For over 40 years they've been providing utter irreverance with pointed literary awareness mixed in with Australian nonsense that makes absolutely no sense outside of this country. They do this while remaining largely anonymous, performing with balaclavas at all times. They were on hiatus for most of the 21st century until 2022, and now have a new album to show for it. It's the first one with new member Vladimir Lenin-McCartney, and yes, all of their stage names are ridiculous. Anyway, remember in 2000 when Radiohead released "Kid A", and then had the audacity to put out another album shortly after that was just a bunch of leftovers from those sessions, including songs like "Pyramid Song" and "Life In A Glasshouse"? Absurd. Anyway, The Smile have done something similar and released another album from the same sessions as their album earlier this year. Lastly we have a first time ever entry for Aphex Twin's second "Selected Ambient Works" album. The only other top 50 album he's had is his 2014 album "Syro", perhaps the most iconic album with a harsh, confrontational green shade?

With only 11 weeks left in the chart year it might be a decent shout to say that it'll be the longest running #1 hit of the year, but you never really know until it's mathematically impossible to not know it. In any case it gets a little juicier (tastier?) next week because it may well be dethroned. The new ROSÉ song has rocketed to a healthy lead on Spotify and has the sales & YouTube edge to make me suspect it only needs to half-ass the rest of the week to get there. For comparison also, BLACKPINK already scored a #1 hit 2 years ago with "Pink Venom", despite it finishing the Spotify week at #11 with a 340,000 stream deficit. They can't be underestimated. For possibly the last time I can report that "Bed Chem" is at #10, 7 weeks in a row, crazy! This one has an asterisk attached to it because I believe ARIA did not combine the streams for the live version of "I Love You, I'm Sorry", which I'm sure would have made the difference. Whether they fix that or not next week though, it looks like "Bed Chem" will fall back into the pack next week and will need a jolt of momentum to come back. Speaking of that pack, Myles Smith has now been in the #11-#20 section for 21 consecutive weeks without a top 10 peak. I believe this to be a record, although it's worth noting that Justin Bieber's "Ghost" had a longer run interrupted by Christmas. Dasha would be on 25 consecutive weeks had "Austin" not gotten a single lucky week at #10. In a fascinatingly fast-tracked version of what the charts used to be like, Charli XCX now has 6 top 50 entries from her latest album despite the fact that none of them had done so until several weeks after the release. Also arriving is the new KSI song which I haven't listened to but if you can believe it, it's his second highest charting single ever (behind "Holiday"). Maybe you can believe it, I'm always skeptical of internet hivemind opinions that reach easy punchline ubiquity. My favourite depiction of the new music chart slowing down has been reached. As suspected last week, "GIRLS" by The Kid LAROI does in fact reach a new peak on the New Music chart, despite being a top 20 hit that's no longer in the top 50. It has to be retired next week though, but the arrival of ROSÉ & Morgan Wallen should stem the tide back the other way for a bit. The new arrival of "Somedays" (which I'd guess isn't in the ARIA top 100 as it's only #137 on Spotify) reminds me of the news I feel I need to document. Over the past couple of months, Hot Hits Australia has been slowly expanding. It's been 50 songs for as long as I can remember but every week or so I check and it's added another 5 songs. It's currently 75 songs, and as an amazing bonus, the Australian content quota has really surpassed the usual. When I checked on the weekend, it had 22/75 songs counting as Australian which is far better than the 8-9/50 it was sitting at for a lot of this year. Granted there are some sketchy inclusions in that 22 (Troye Sivan via Charli XCX, CYRIL via Robin Schulz, an Odd Mob remix of Sean Paul's "Get Busy"), but it's the kind of progress I have to commend. Maybe something will be done about the state of the algorithms. Earlier this year Charli XCX debuted at #3 which was a slight comedown as her last album hit the top spot. She's reversed fortunes though and now has a second #1 album. A fair effort given the incumbent streaming avalanche hasn't really slowed down all that much. Sadly the chart personification of Santa Claus has to take another Australian artist off the nice list. RÜFÜS DU SOL missed the top spot in 2018 when they went up against the rough competition in "A Star Is Born", but they got back to #1 again with their next album. Now they're only at #3 which makes you wonder if they could ever get there again. Actually I'm misrepresenting it because they actually haven't released the album physically yet. Maybe with enough pre-orders they'll have the last laugh but I feel like they're just gonna get back into the top 5. The Offspring also return this week. They've had 2 #1 albums in the past (the obvious two), and nearly got a 3rd in 2021 but lost out to London Grammar. Did you know that London Grammar's album a few weeks ago didn't even make the top 50 here? I guess The Offspring had the last laugh, I dunno what happened with that one though, it's an aberration. The potential chart dominance of Jelly Roll seems to loom in the distance. He scored his first top 50 hit earlier this year via Eminem (with a song that's still selling decently), and now has a top 20 album to his name. Sheppard return thanks to vinyl sales, and I should also clarify for context that Olivia Rodrigo, Coldplay & Travis Scott have all been in the country recently. This week is also the first time in 2 years that Taylor Swift has been out of the top 10.

Billie Eilish Back in 2022 a quirk of point distribution and perhaps just enough overlap with Asian music markets meant that BLACKPINK debuted at #1 in Australia with "Pink Venom", a song that missed the top 20 in the US & UK. In some respects, this means that Rosé was the last somewhat Australian artist to hit #1 here, she was born in New Zealand but spent more time growing up in Australia. The statement is still true but more direct as she now has a #1 single as a solo artist. Bruno Mars is also here, getting his 4th #1 hit, after "Just The Way You Are", "Grenade" and "Uptown Funk". I'd say that's good trivia to keep track of, but a couple of years ago I went to a trivia night and was not correctly appraised of points for identifying high charting Bruno Mars songs which cost me the win (something that still eludes me). I will not put the hosts on blast though because I was compensated a bonus point next time I went. Speaking of belated attribution, "I Love You, I'm Sorry" enters the top 10 this week, something it should have done last week. Should someone unearth this decades from now in confusion at the misaligned timing with other charts, know that ARIA screwed the pooch on this one, again. One Direction have two re-entries this week, the highest being "Night Changes", which actually scores a new peak. Many people have been saying, 'if "Tension" is so good, why isn't there a "Tension II"', and like all strawmen, they've been horribly crumpled into place this week. Kylie Minogue now has 9 #1 albums. We are once again seeing the single/album chart divide as we've got 4 debuts in the top 10, all Australian, none have any charting singles. The second is Dean Lewis who actually improves on his last album's peak position, and then we've got another former #1 artist in Skegss (not Skeggs, I assure you). Thelma Plum has not had a #1 album but this is her second to make the top 10, 5 years after the first. All 5 of One Directions albums re-enter here, and we've got debuts for Confidence Man & Yeat, the former fairly low here all things considered. With this massive influx we've got a lot of albums seeing considerably lower positions than they're used to. Notably, "Diamonds" by Elton John drops out for the first time this decade, meaning that Luke Combs' "This One's For You" is the only album that has charted every week of this decade. All up this is its 333rd week in the top 50.

We will probably not reach a point of enough "APT." weeks to match the song's chorus but you never know I guess. It'll probably be #1 next week but has been threatened at the top of the Spotify chart by Gracie Abrams, which really flies in the face of my attempts for years to not acknowledge her music. Anyway the main thing that happened here is that Tyler, The Creator had a lot of chart entries, and you have to remember that in Australia, the week was even more over by the time "CHROMAKOPIA" came out so that's even more impressive. Sneaking in alongside is "Sailor Song" going top 10, missing out on the chance of clean sweeping 11's. Also Lady Gaga arrives in the top 40, which I have to imagine was helped by YouTube numbers because "Disease" actually never made the Spotify top 50. Coldplay are also in the unimportant east side of Australia currently. They played Perth a year ago and had a handful of re-entries back then, although I'm not sure now if it's because of that show or because they also announced that they'd be back a year later in the larger population centres. That year has arrived now though which means I get to speculate once again if "Yellow" is being under-counted on the chart again. For now it's just "Viva la vida", but "Yellow" was #13 on Spotify yesterday. They'll certainly climb next week. In an album chart battle of sales that only technically took place this week, Tyler, The Creator scores his first ever #1 album. Despite dominant streaming numbers, he's tended to always fall short due to the release strategy which is sufficient to top the US charts but not here. Amends were made though, as his Australian tour has a CD bundle option so despite the album not actually being out physically yet, that's what's gotten him over the line. The irony here is that Amyl And The Sniffers have gotten to #2 largely off the back of pre-orders that were made weeks and months ago all cashing in on Friday. They're a way away from legendary misfortune status but this is their second consecutive #2 album, as back in 2021 the incumbent Drake held them off. Sheppard also return to the top 10 thanks to what appears to be digital sales, I'm not sure what's spurred it. Green Day's second #1 album also returns. The way more fascinating 'return' for my books though is Powderfinger's debut album. Now, Powderfinger would hit #4 with their second album and then #1 with every subsequent album, but this debut album only ever reached #51. Not only that, but it's widely considered to be pretty terrible, and jarring to anyone familiar with the band. I guess for a UK equivalent, imagine if The Beautiful South made an album in the early '90s that sounded like Pearl Jam. Anyway, they've managed to get enough people to get around the 30th anniversary that it's hitting the top 50 for the first time ever. Elsewhere this week, Halsey returns as one of those aforementioned legendary misfortune statuses with three #2 albums to their name. This is the first one to land below #3. A little while ago, there was an inexplicable ABBA compilation that just kinda sat around the #50 spot on the ARIA Chart for months until it was exiled. It was a very specific box set that probably wasn't actually on sale but generated the streaming points incidentally. Anyway, this new one probably has sales this week but it's a mystery what happens after now. It's crazy that I could bring up Halsey because there's a handful of people who are even more unlucky on the ARIA Chart and the grand champion of that is Thom Yorke. Between Radiohead and his solo career, he's had 7 #2 peaks without a #1. I hear he's gonna take Luke Parker's spot in the Sydney Swans line up next year. Anyhow, he's not coming close to that this time with a live album, which is remarkably awkward timing given that he just made international news for stopping a show due to being heckled in Melbourne about his Israel stance. I'll leave you to make up your own mind on that and just say that Kelsea Ballerini sneaks in a 4th top 50 album.

I strongly suspect it won't stay there next week and you probably know why. I mentioned last week the clerical error around the performance for Coldplay's "Yellow". It once again falls under the unofficial rule that the top 20 is sacred, and looks to be quite accurate now, climbing considerably higher than it's ever been in the last 23 years. There's more Coldplay to go with that, including the first appearance since COVID-19 for The Chainsmokers in the ARIA top 50. The Weeknd also brings along Anitta for a first ever top 50 entry. Tyler, The Creator had never had a #1 album before last week and now he's #1 for a second consecutive week with no vinyl. He stays ahead of quite a number of debuts, especially on the Australian side of things. Firstly Paul Kelly who has had a habit of #1 albums at this time of year lately, but has to make do with #3. Then we've got Chase Atlantic who I very much assure is a different band to Stand Atlantic, however the battle line has been drawn and the Standers win this time as they charted 1 position higher about a month ago. For the first time in nearly 30 years, The Cure are back in the top 10. I remember back in 2008 when every single they released periodically in the lead up to their album charted in the top 100, but then the album itself only made #30. John Butler's been making serious waves on the charts going all the way back to 2001. That's mostly with his interchangeable trio, with which he's had 4 #1 albums. When it comes to proper solo albums, he's never quite had the same fanfare, but this week manages an equal solo high at #23. Lastly with the longest gap she's ever had between albums, we've got the return of Sarah Blasko, who has previously made the top 10 with 5 of her albums. I've been something of a fan since I first discovered her music in 2006, and finally got to see her live earlier this year.

Hozier & Tate McRae have been touring here lately, and I know Artemas is presenting at the ARIA Awards for some reason so maybe he's getting a local boost as well. Through sales I am unable to allocate, Coldplay have managed to go to #1 anyway, with a once and a blue moon scenario of dropping out of the top 50 and only peaking at #1 on the re-entry.

It's going through and ranking all 1,000 songs that appeared in triple j's Hottest 100 from 2013 to 2022. This cross section of youth culture means that Billie Eilish & Lorde both appear over a dozen times, but then so do bands like Lime Cordiale and Bring Me The Horizon. I'm currently right at the bottom of the list so it's a lot of me finding kind ways to talk about songs I'm not very fond of. On an unrelated note, we have the same #1 single as last week. Actually we have the same #2 single, and #3, and #4, and #5, and #6, and #7, and #8, and #9, and #10. As if to make the chart even more seamless, Coldplay crash down but Tate McRae manages to debut at exactly the position that "Yellow" has been holding for the last 2 weeks. With a song that also evokes the same era as it shares its name with a 1999 Heath Ledger film. Australians will remember it as the movie where they first heard Powderfinger's "These Days". Speaking of Australians, The Kid LAROI has been doing a local tour lately, and manages to finally get "NIGHTS LIKE THIS" into the top 20. Its partner in the act of sitting eternally in the middle of the chart, "Slow It Down" is still trying to figure that step out. It would've looked a decent chance next week if not for the letters GNX. Teddy Swims also gets a 3rd top 50 hit. I found it mildly amusing that this first 2024 song that sounded a little bit like that one Cutting Crew song has managed to replace Morgan Wallen's song that also sounds a little bit like that one Cutting Crew song. Linkin Park score their 4th #1 album. In the past they've had a track record of picking very bad weeks to release their albums, often being beaten out by blockbuster Australian releases. "Meteora" debuted at #2 because it was released on the same week as Delta Goodrem's "Innocent Eyes", the highest selling album of the decade ("Meteora" was #98 for the 2000s). They slightly improved their record a few years ago when the re-release of "Hybrid Theory" belatedly got it to the #1 spot, but this is their first new album to hit the top since "A Thousand Suns" did so in 2010. They're joined on the debut front by Illy, an artist who will appear on my blog 9 times. His last two albums both debuted at #1 but this one comes years later with very little buzz that I've seen, so colour me impressed he's managed to score a top 5 debut. I cannot say the same for Shawn Mendes, who after three straight top 3 albums has scored his lowest debut to date, lower than "Wonder" was in its 3rd week. I normally try to re-produce all crediting and spelling the way they're listed on the ARIA Chart. I've taken an exception to this rule just this one week because I believe in an important rule with regards to MF DOOM which is ALL CAPS when you spell the man name. Prior to this, the only time MF DOOM ever charted before was as a featured artist on The Avalanches' song "Frankie Sinatra". By sheer coincidence, that song also debuted alongside Shawn Mendes. Thanks to the vinyl re-release, "MM..FOOD" posthumously becomes his first ever charting album in Australia.
