Great review! KM94 is another album of 2 halves for me - excellent singles and some incredible album tracks and then… filler.

PYIMP is sublime - tragic that it missed out making the Top 10 :drama: And CIM still sounds amazing today - I actually think it doesn’t get the love it deserves.

My favorite Kylie album and one of my favourite albums of all time IP up next, always love seeing what people have to say about it.

Thanks, I’m really looking forward to Impossible Princess, as it’s her first album I remember seeing in the shops when I was growing up. So there’s a but more attached to it than previous albums. The singles are all great though, so I know that much.

I pretty much feel the same as you do about the album it does fall into a lull while listening through it. It does have some good songs but the pace needed changing midway.

I'll have to disagree with you on Dangerous Game, it's her strongest vocal I've ever heard.

Thanks for the comments. It’s great seeing everyone’s thoughts on them. :)

Impossible Princess (1997)

Album #6 is up next and it’s the album of multiple names, Impossible Princess. As I’m sure I’ve stated earlier this era was my first proper introduction to Kylie Minogue. It was the first album of hers I remember seeing in the shops, the first album where I remember hearing singles on the radio and seeing music videos on TV and the first album where I actually started to take an interest in Kylie.

Opening up we have the album track Too Far which for me sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place on her previous album, what I do like about Too Far though is that it comes in at under 5mins. Cowboy Style is up next and whilst I don’t remember it being a single here in Australia I can kind of see why it was chosen to round out the era. It was commercial enough for the time and I quite like what sound like a little Irish influence in the music of it. Track 3 and were on to the single that lead this album campaign Some Kind Of Bliss. I have very vague memories of this but remember liking the chorus, though I’d never heard the full song until well into the 2000’s and once I did it cemented itself as a favourite. Did It Again will always be a special Kylie song for me, even it’s no longer my favourite. It was the first song from hers I fully remember having the experience of hearing it on the radio in my parents car or at home at night. It’s also the first music video of hers I remember seeing all over TV. In a way it was my introduction to Kylie Minogue, though I’ll put my hand up and confess when I first saw the music video and not knowing who Kylie Minogue was I did think it was a four person girl group… Anyway on the song itself, I still get plenty of enjoyment out of it now, the pop-rock type sound really went against the pop of Aqua I was into at the time. Breathe is another one I have lots of memories of seeing on TV but unlike Did It Again I don’t recall hearing it on the radio much. I remember it sounding very different to the pop of Steps, B*Witched and co that I had on repeat of the time, but the slightly electronic chilled sound (not sure that’s a thing) was really different. I still love Breathe to this day and would probably have it in my top 5 Kylie Minogue singles. (perhaps I should do a list after this album listen through). Five tracks in and I was very much enjoying the sound of Impossible Princess, I think it sounds very late 90’s indie-pop. Say Hey is up next and to me it feels almost like a dance type track, one that really caught me off guard at the start but by the end had come around to thinking was ok.

Drunk was one that I enjoyed too but for me anyway I’ve noticed a dip in the songs since Breathe and the other singles. Things pick up again with I Don’t Need Anyone, which I thought sounded quite good and perhaps could’ve worked as a single. I can’t quite put my finger on it but it sounds like it would’ve worked great for some of those female led pop-rock-indie bands of the mid to late 90’s. Jump whilst nothing special in my view would make really nice background the music, the type you’d just have on sitting around doing not much. Limbo was nice without connecting with me, Through The Years was a nice side step into a jazzier type sound which I found grew on me and I actually think this wouldn’t be completely out of place on Amy Winehouse’s debut album with a slightly different production. Finishing off Impossible Princess is closing track Dreams and unfortunately not much to say on this one.

As a whole I enjoyed this more than her previous album Kylie Minogue but it wasn’t as good as some of her earlier ones. The singles Some Kind Of Bliss, Did It Again & Breathe are some of my favourite Kylie singles and Too Far & I Don’t Need Anyone help push this a little further up from the bottom of my list.

Singles I liked: Some Kind Of Bliss, Did It Again, Breathe

Album Tracks I liked: Too Far, I Don’t Need Anyone

Of my rank so far Impossible Princess (#3) & Kylie (#4) are very close, it's the singles and memories that edge Impossible Princess slightly above it.

Love your IP review as I would feel the same as you on the songs in general apart from limbo which i love. Very happy you like breathe and I don't need anyone as they are faves of mine and like you I rate breathe highly as a kylie single.

Love your comment on how you thought you were watching a 4 piece girl band from the did it again video :D

I also rate IP well above KM94.

Limbo is the best song on IP, should have been a single. Say Hey is my least favourite. Jump is my personal favourite.

I agree that limbo should have been a single and possibly an ideal lead single.

I still think Breathe if sampled by the right artist could be a decent sized hit.

I may need to go back and listen to Limbo again. :)

Limbo was pretty much instant for me but I don't need anyone was my standout outside breathe when I first heard the album.

I’ve just given Limbo another few listens and it’s definitely clicking with me now. :music:

Light Years is next up but I’ll probably get around to it mid week at the earliest.

Must say Light Years is the one I’m most excited for. Spinning Around, On A Night Like This and Please Stay are all fantastic singles and the one album track I’ve heard, So Now Goodbye is probably my favourite Kylie Minogue album track. If the rest of Light Years is close to being as good as those songs then I’ll be very happy.

Limbo will stay with you now that it's clicking with you.

I look forward to your light years review.

I look forward to your light years review.

I’m getting the feeling that’s the case with Limbo.

Thanks, I’ve done a bit of binge watching on my day off today so Light Years could be sooner now. :)

Will catch up in a bit - looking forward to reading about your IP play through!

Light Years (2000)

Halfway into the year 2000, the new millennium we were greeted with a new Kylie Minogue single and what a single it was. Spinning Around marked a change in direction for Kylie and was like some sort of rebirth for the star. The infectious pop sounds were far removed of her previous singles from the mid 90’s on. I can remember this launching, by this time I was 12 and well aware who Kylie Minogue was for the first time heading in to an album campaign. I can remember watching the Pepsi Music Chart Show on a Saturday night where I heard this for the first time and saw the music video as well. I can remember those gold hot pants and that infectious chorus. By this point I was well into my ‘obsession’ stage with pop and chart music, getting Top of the Pops magazine imported from the UK, buying imported albums and singles from the HMV in the city and loving all things pop. Whilst I liked the song there was something that didn’t click with me, but I’m not sure what. On A Night Like This would follow and this hit me straight away, so much so that when I was at the shops it became my first every Kylie Minogue purchase and whilst I don’t revisit it as much as I should it is still a very solid great pop song. Two songs in and already this album is off to a strong start and with already know what song three I’m very comfortable saying that this album is off to the strongest of starts. I can’t remember how I knew So Now Goodbye before playing this album, it’s perhaps because my sister owned Light Years and it’s the only song I have even a faint memory of hearing when she played it, alongside the singles of course. Anyway on the song itself, So Now Goodbye is to this stage of the listen through not just my favourite Kylie Minogue album track but probably with my top 20 Kylie Minogue songs. I don’t know exactly what it is that lifts it above everything else for me, but the chorus and melody are just so good, I constantly find myself singing along to it.

We enter a brief period of the unknown now for the next three songs where I know nothing about them all the Disco Down gets it off to a strong start, for me it sounds a little like Does Your Mother Know by ABBA which isn’t a negative. Loveboat had a chorus that I quite enjoyed but Koocachoo didn’t really leave any impression on me sadly. I remember at the time really despising Your Disco Needs You and honestly I have no real idea why, upon listening to it for the first time in over 20 years and I’ve almost done a 180, it’s actually quite good and whilst it would be amongst my favourites I can now see why it’s so popular with so many fans. The fourth single of the album is up now in Please Stay another song I quite enjoy, I can remember watching the music video of this on Hitlist UK back in late 2000 early 2001 and really enjoying it. Eight tracks in and it’s been a pretty strong album so far with only two songs I’m not so keen on. Wow Bittersweet Goodbye was a change in pace that I was not expecting, but I actually didn’t mind it, it’s nice to hear Kylie on a track like this. Even if it’s not one of the best on the album I still found it a welcome surprise. And just like that we’re back into the disco sound with Butterfly and whilst it’s not as strong as the singles or So Now Goodbye or Disco Down it’s still a decent addition to the album. Under The Influence Of Love is another good album track on a similar level to Butterfly, however I’m So High just seemed to completely pass me by. I remember being quite indifferent with the Robbie Williams collaboration Kids, I’ve never loved it and I’ve never hated it for me it’s just there. It is one I heard a lot though as my sister owned the single of it. Closing out Light Years is the title track Light Years, Another fairly decent album tracks and in my view the perfect choice to close out what was a very good album.

Overall this was a fairly strong album, the first half of the album is incredibly strong bar one or two misses for me and the second half was decent as well. I think at this stage it’d be right up there near the top in my ranking too.

Singles I liked: Spinning Around, On A Night Like This, Please Stay & Your Disco Needs You

Album Tracks I liked: So Now Goodbye, Disco Down

Light Years, along with Fever, should've been a single!

I like "I'm So High" but never likes "Under the Influence of Love". I like Butterfly but it's like a shadow of Light Years (the track).
