I'm still not going to believe the wipe-out until we actually see it despite the polls. The tories getting less than 200 seats would be great to see but I'm not sure I buy it yet.

Agreed; I think they will do better than the polls suggest (although that wouldn't be difficult).

They will lose seats, I just don't think they'll be below 100 like the Torygeddon polls indicate... I hope to be proved wrong though and Lib Dems become the official opposition :D

Don’t the Tories generally always do better than the polls suggest, with Labour doing worse?

That's how it feels; certainly over the last 14 years!

If you went by social media, you'd have thought the 2019 general election was an easy one for Labour. I naively thought it was too, but obviously not.

This feels different though, it's not just the online bubble.

This is indeed one indication that once Labour get in power then the rolling back of Tory authoritarianism might, might occur. However I would not base your vote on that or count on it - I'm quite sure that some of the illiberal Tory policies will remain out of inertia, even if I expect the Labour government to be far more proactive than we're used to government being.

Starmers history in his previous roles would suggest he is quite authotarian!

As much as I've criticised Keir Starmer over the years, I was actually quite moved by the comments about Brianna Ghey/her parents and what trans ppl go through in general that he made on the debate just now. It gives me hope that we aren't going to see these divisive and toxic culture wars that have dominated the past 5 years.

“Keir Starmer will, on paper, become one of the most successful politicians in history, despite exciting precisely no one and believing in absolutely nothing.”

That’s my favourite comement I’ve seen for a while. And yet the tories fully deserve however bad their result is going to be. Gah I’ve never felt so strongly about electoral reform being needed.

Well thank God we want efficiency over excitement. :D

Yeah, I see a lot of people criticising Starmer for being dull but would you not prefer that?

I don't care about charisma if you're incompetent. Yes, both are ideal but I'll settle for the latter.

The speech about Brianna Ghey and Trans acceptance at Question Time was the first time I really adnired Starmer for what he was saying. Better late than never I guess x

Ed Davey also came across pretty well, of course Sunak still didn't, it's really quite stunning how much he keeps digging with every media appearance. His defensive response to the audience member asking about the ECHR was so nasty and has utter inability to provide anything of value apart from meaningless 'tax cuts' was pathetic. Deserved the calls of Shame.

It’s funny in America from the 90’s onwards the most charismatic person won, it didn’t matter what party, pretty much until the last election but that was a very unusual election with the whole Covid issue. We’ve kind of Americanised our system with debates which are probably more about theatre and entertainment than anything worthwhile. There are probably people who would be great PM’s but would be terrible at speeches or debates. Overall sometimes you need a personality to win voters but this election a default option would beat the Tories and he is close to being a default option. So his lack of charisma is probably a vote winner.

In fairness to Starmer he said the same in the Commons about Brianna when Sunak made a fool of himself. His wing of the party are socially to the left. He’s a Islington Lawyer isn’t he!

The thing about him being boring - it’s a FPTP system he has to be like that!!

His whole campaign is based around stability vs chaos - it’s a good theme after the past 10 years!

I am seeing people saying that Farage could legitimately be locked up like Oswald Mosley, seeing as he is a Rusdian stooge and clear fash. It would work in delegitimising him, and follow precedent of not allowing obvious fascists into government, and we have the paradox of tolerance, but ... it's clearly not democratic.

He’s not going to be locked up, but his interview with Panorama is a good example of why he won’t ever be Prime Minister. He serves the people who fund him and there’s holes in every story he brings up. Plus he’s a Putin apologist which is daft. If he’s given platforms and challenged enough people can see through the shite he spouts. In reality, if he takes over the Tories (which I don’t think he will but I could see him being heavily influential) they’re gonna lose the centre ground.

Farage being PM or Tory leader seems like a leftist type nightmare they project into reality as some sort of coping mechanism. Like saying your teams gonna lose when you want them to win. There is no possibility of those things. Farage ego is bad, reform were polling great as was he, he did not need to make those comments but he can't help himself.
