It would be the second final in a row to be decided by a golden goal where Trezeguet would score the winner. For France it would be their second Euros victory after winning it in 1984, they also became the first World Cup champions to also win the European Championship title.

This was a good game indeed with Hungary pushing Portugal all the way, it was thanks to some genius from Cristiano Ronaldo that Portugal qualified for the knockout stages. For Hungary they would go out in the second round to Belgium 4-0 as for Portugal they would break French hearts and win Euro 2016 by beating them 1-0 after extra time that match was particularly memorable for a large case of moths.
June 7, 20241 yr Portugal the luckiest winners ever with the rule change for best 3rd-placed teams coming just at the right time.
June 10, 20241 yr It's nowhere near as good as it is now though and they'd still be considered shock winners this year. It was very much a case of one man carrying them to the title like with Messi in the World Cup.

This was quite an extraordinary game with Croatia coming back from 3-1 down to level at 3-3 to take it into extra time. But for Spain they would prevail 5-3 in extra time against the 2018 World Cup runners-up. For Spain they would go and reach the semi-finals in Euro 2020 before losing to the eventual winners Italy on penalties, this would be the second knockout stage game in a row where Spain will take a team to penalties after beating Switzerland on pens.
June 10, 20241 yr Ah that was the same day as Switzerland vs France right? Yeah crazy scenes in both games, that Spain game had one of the wildest OGs ever seen.

June 11, 20241 yr Really enjoying this countdown so far! This thread has reminded me that France benefited twice from the golden goal rule at the perfect stage to do so at Euro 2000.

This was an polished performance from the Netherlands who had beaten the 2006 World Cup champions Italy 3-0 in their first group stage match, as for France they had drawn 0-0 against Romania in a drab match. This Dutch team was probably the best team in my view not to win a major tournament. That goal from Sneijder for 4-1, I remember particularly well for the late John Motson saying 'Sneijder, SNEIJDER', oh and he's made 4 to Netherlands'. For the Netherlands they would knocked out in the quarter-finals to Russia 3-1 after extra time. As for France they would exit the group stages after losing 2-0 to Italy in a repeat of their 2006 World Cup final.

June 12, 20241 yr Author 3rd- Turkey 3-2 Czech Republic (Austria & Switzerland 2008) [Group Stage] 3M9LqBevzwU Turkey: Demirel Altintop Gungor (Asik 63') Cetin Balta Topal (Kazim-Richards 57') Aurelio Arda Tuncay Nihat Semih Senturk (Sarioglu 46') Czech Republic: Cech Grygera Ufalusi Rozehnal Jankulovski Galasek Matejovsky (Jarolim 39') Polak Sionko (Vlcek 85') Plasil (Kadlec 80') Goals: Koller 34' 0-1 Plasil 62' 0-2 Turan 75' 1-2 Nihat 87' 2-2 Nihat 89' 3-2 Into the Top 3 now, and we have this Euro 2008 group stage match between Turkey and Czech Republic, going into the final group stage match both Turkey and Czech Republic had a chance of qualifying into the quarter-finals what followed was quite brilliant. Czech Republic went 2-0 up and seemed to be on their way to the quarter-finals going into the 75th minute, However Turkey would produce an quite extraordinary comeback with Turan scoring in the 75th minute, in the 87th minute an mistake from Cech would let Nihat equalise. two minutes later Nihat would score again, there was even more late drama where the Turkey goalkeeper got sent off for pushing Koller. For Turkey they would go on and reach the semi-finals after beating Croatia on penalties after scoring in the 122nd minute to take it to penalties. They would lose to Germany 3-2 in the semi-finals.
June 13, 20241 yr Author 2nd- France 3-3 Switzerland (Switzerland won 5-4 on penalties) (Pan-European 2020) [Last 16] IJbIOaUpMWc France: Lloris Varane Lenglet (Coman 46') [Thuram 111'] Kimpembe Pavard Rabiot Pogba Kante Griezmann (Sissoko 88') Benzema (Giroud 94') Mbappe Switzerland: Sommer Elvedi Akanji Rodriguez (Mehmedi 87') Widmer (Mbabu 73') Zuber (Fassnacht 79') Freuler Xhaka Shaqiri (Gavranovic 73') Seferovic (Schar 97') Embolo (Vargas 79') Goals: Seferovic 15' 0-1 Benzema 57' 1-1 Benzema 59' 2-1 Pogba 75' 3-1 Seferovic 81' 3-2 Gavranovic 90' 3-3 Penalties: Gavranovic 0-1 Pogba 1-1 Schar 1-2 Giroud 2-2 Akanji 2-3 Thuram 3-3 Vargas 3-4 Kimpembe 4-4 Mehmedi 4-5 Mbappe missed pen. At #2, it is this last 16 match from Euro 2020 between the then world champions France taking on Switzerland. What followed was quite extraordinary, after the Croatia v Spain match which came fifth in this countdown followed this, what an day of football that was. I have chosen this because for me it was quite a shock with Switzerland knocking out France, to come back from 3-1 down in the last nine minutes was something else. Seeing Mbappe miss his penalty was something that I didn't expect to see. For Switzerland it was their first knockout stage competition win in a major tournament since 1938. For Switzerland they would be knocked out in the quarter-finals in another penalty shootout this time to Spain.

I can remember this game particularly for it being the late late show from Spain, a game which had everything from penalties to red cards. I can also remember for John Motson's commentary and watching this with my Dad. For Spain that late minute goal would take both them and Yugoslavia through. For Yugoslavia they would lose heavily in the quarter-finals 6-1 to the Netherlands as for Spain they would also be knocked out in the quarters to the eventual winners France by 2-1. I wish to thank everyone who has contributed to this countdown, I hope you have enjoyed this countdown as much as I have done producing this. Many thanks, :)
