June 14, 20241 yr There was a frankly odd little visual introduction to the tournament and then the host went on to say (i'm paraphrasing) 'not being held in a country the size of a continent, not being held in the middle of a pandemic and not being held in a country with no footballing history'... Think it's safe to say they're glad to see Germany as hosts.I can see their point, which backs up what I said the other day.
June 14, 20241 yr I can see their point, which backs up what I said the other day. Oh I agree with it completely - it definitely feels like the first real major tournament since France 2016 building up - Euro 2020 only really got exciting towards the latter stages and with England doing so well - I don't know why but I was just expecting a slightly more staid introduction. June 14, 20241 yr The 2022 World Cup honestly feels like a blur. Being held in the middle of the regular club football season, in the winter time and with most of the matches happening during working hours it just feels like it didn't even happen. The final though was an all time great! I think this tournament will feel different but still compared to some other Euro tournaments over the years it doesn't feel like there has been a lot of build up and hype prior to the tournament.

At least we know there'll be hype coming up to the next one

It kind of needs to be in the summer.
June 14, 20241 yr Euro opening ceremonies are never going to rival Olympic ceremonies - let's be honest
June 15, 20241 yr Author What's the record for the most goals in a Euros tournament Mack? 142 in Euro 2020.
June 15, 20241 yr I'd put money on that number being beaten this time. Seems like the whole tournament is gonna be a bit of a goalfest!
June 16, 20241 yr ITV have certainly had the better set up so far, although I can only really comment on commentators as I mute the pundits during build and at half time for both channels. It's the football I want to watch not the talking. The Hungary v Switzerland game was a great pairing with Townsend and Tyldesley. The commentary on the BBC match was so bad I ended up muting it during active play which I don't normally. Hopefully a better pair of commentators this evening.
June 16, 20241 yr I liked 2022, it had everything and a memorable winner Edited June 16, 20241 yr by Liam sota
June 16, 20241 yr I liked 2022, it had everything and a memorable winner The actual football was stellar but not so much the general atmosphere of the tournament. The videos coming out of Germany feel like a 'real tournament' for the first time since France 2016. Shame the WC is going to be spread across 3 countries - one the size of a continent - and the 2030 one is being held in three continents with 2034 going to Saudi Arabia ffs. Euro 2028 should be pretty good - being held in the home nations - but the next proper WC is going to be in 2038/2042.
June 16, 20241 yr Yeh all euros should really be held in Germany, France or UK and world cups in Brazil 😬!! Like Tydesley and Townsend commentating as it reminds me of Liverpool in the champions league in 2005 when they were on every week. Hate itv as a channel though trash commercial tv with too many ads!

Hate itv as a channel though trash commercial tv with too many ads! Andros Townsend surely wasn’t. He would have been 14 years old! I wonder what happened to Andy Townsend anyway. I haven’t heard of him in ages. I prefer Andros’s commentary anyway so it’s no great loss.

It's more they should be held in a single country and a country that has footballing history. Qatar, the US and Saudi Arabia are not it.
June 16, 20241 yr Kind of agree but it can be good to introduce football to other non mainstream countries. But every other one should be in Europe! My comment was kind of tongue in cheek though with an element of truth in it!

June 16, 20241 yr England is ineligible to host in 2038 due the to the cycling rules (basically as some European countries will host in 2030 the whole confederation is barred from hosting the next 2 editions) so it'll almost certainly be in the US again. The cycling rules are ridiculous. North America has one country that could host the tournament on its own, South America has two, Africa probably none and Asia four, as long as FIFA doesn’t mind holding the tournament in autocracies such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia.. Europe has five (six when Russia are allowed back).
June 17, 20241 yr They are ridiculous but it's really the 2030 edition that's scuppered things for other nations. Europe & South America in particular bending over to FIFA's desires to have a multi-continental 100th anniversary tournament and accepting a pitiful number of games has screwed over the rest of the confederations.
