https://simonneedsyou.com/ - Auditions at the end of July.

The show - being produced by Syco with some independent company - doesn't yet have a name but there's a lot of talk about this on social media. And it's largely going down - rightly so - like a cup of cold sick. This thread in particular basically one red flag:

Every fibre of my being is hoping that this flops (it probably will anyway) but yeah. The world doesn't need boybands if Simon's involved.

I'm surprised because I thought he had stepped back from the music business. His record label hasn't been a thing for 4 years.

Social media doesn't like him anyway for various reasons, so would be laying into him regardless. I don't know where this will be broadcast but I do think it's not really his bag anymore.

He was in his 40s when he signed the likes of Westlife and 5ive. I don't know how it's going to work now.

Best thing he can do is to re-sign Westlife

Tbf he did quite well with One Direction and we got Harry Styles solo as a result of that!

It was very much lightning in a bottle with 1D, I think, and I say that as someone who remains a big fan of them.

I think it was the market at the time. Early 2010s had quite a few boybands in the charts - 1D, Westlife, Take That, JLS, Boyzone, The Wanted etc.

I don’t think Simon will ever produce a major chart star again. The charts just work too differently now and I don’t think he’s anywhere near as respected as he was previously. I can’t so much see it being much of a thing didn’t he do something like this on ITV where a girlband I believe won but what happened to them?

Yeah. I think there’s less interest re Simon these days. At some point I think we will see a major boyband and a major girl band break through some point this decade perhaps but it’s not gonna be with the aid of a talent show like this.

These things go in cycles, when 1D were put together, Simon saw an opportunity with The Wanted and of course people forget in 2011/2012 there was actually quite a big rivalry between the two which the labels played up. Definitely lightning in a bottle though with 1D, they surpassed everyone's expectations.

Girl groups fans can pay attention on Lithuanian music scene, if the language is not very important for you, because their girl groups prefer to sing on a native Lithuanian.

Really must start the introduction thread for everybody who wish to deep into a wonderful world of Lithuanian girl groups.

Yes, they created two new bands with The X Factor: The Band and didn't do anything with them. No releases, nothing. I don't see this being any different, although at least he's only focusing on one band.

I'm not sure the pop industry is where he's going to make headwinds these days. The problem I have with a lot of more newer boybands is that they seem too slick and polished. The whole appeal with One Direction was that they were the opposite.

Boy bands aren't really a thing right now nor is Simon plus I don't think Simon knows how the market works right now as he is used of a formula that no longer works.

I'd have preferred some thing like pop star the rivals again by creating both a girl and boy band and put them head to head in the charts just like girls aloud and one true voice.

I think if they didn't rush through The X Factor: The Band and did it seriously over ten weeks, instead of the disastrous Celebrity series, they might have gotten more out of it.

Creating.a group through a casting process is less of an issue than whatever they do to fit into the market.

I think in that case they’d be competing to make the top 100 rather than #1 :P

I think in 10 years or so this could maybe work but right now? Can't really see it happening. Does he even have a record label? I think Syco was defunct by 2018.

Desperate attempt to cling on to some relevance from an increasingly irrelevant Simon Cowell.

Thankfully the days where anything he does impacts the charts are long gone.

He doesn't. I believe Syco folded in 2020, though I don't think they had many artists on their roster by then. Most had moved to RCA or something else.

Perhaps that’s a blessing if Simon is only restricted to managing them.

I do wonder how much of a part he had to play in what people were doing by the end anyway.

With people like Labrinth (one of the few people on his roster who didn't come from one of his talent shows), he let him do his own thing but still oversaw the overall thing.

With some acts (maybe with people like Susan Boyle) he took a more active role in picking the songs and stuff like that.
