July 14, 20241 yr  this is the strangest post I’ve ever read in the sports forum They haven't plucked that out of thin air.
July 14, 20241 yr Maybe have some empathy. There's a direct link between reported domestic violence and football matches, with reports going up if England lose. There's been a campaign running all tournaments around this to try and encourage women who are suffering to come forward. I do have empathy but feel generalisations against football fans don’t help the situation people suffer. Edited July 14, 20241 yr by Steve201
July 14, 20241 yr Yes but Spain were the best team there tonight and through the tournament. It feels like England will never win a tournament! Reckon the aim will the 2028 Euros now, with whatever happens in the World Cup a bit of a bonus. I think how we perform there (providing we qualify) will be a bit of pot luck based on where we end up playing and at what times FIFA put the games on. We're not a million miles away, but hope this does show that we could do with playing some form of progressive football at times. Spain play nice, but know how to play ugly too - we can definitely do this!

That was one of Southgate’s best traits at introducing new young players pretty quickly into the squad.
July 14, 20241 yr Spain have Nico Williams one of the best wingers in the world - 22 Yamal future ballon dor - just turned 17 Pedri world class central midfielder - 21 Gavi world class central midfielder - 19 Rodri best midfielder in the world So yeah good luck in the future anybody else. England have great young players too and these two countries are miles ahead of anybody else but Spain really could dominate for a decade
July 14, 20241 yr It’s usually not as easy as that though in international football but agree it could be hard to beat them - the two new wingers have lifted them highest from 2021/22!

Gavi is awesome, but who knows how we will come back from his ACL. Both England and Spain have good players at the moment, those who are on the peripherary (and currently starting) not even counting the likes of Quansah, Ellliott, Branthwaite, Miley, Rico Lewis and then who else knows who is rising through the ranks.
July 14, 20241 yr  this is the strangest post I’ve ever read in the sports forum Sadly I thought similar and breathed a heavy sigh for those affected when England lost. The correlation between England losing and instances of domestic violence here is a shocking statistic. --- England deserved it in 2021 but Spain deserved this one. They were very easily the team of the tournament and looked way stronger tonight for the majority of the game although Pickford made some great saves and 2-1 against such a strong side is not a bad score at all, it could easily have been 4-1 or 5-1. Sad for the team but I'm not sure based on the tournament that I feel aggrieved by the result like I was three years ago. Southgate has been brilliant over most of his tenure and done a lot for the country but it is time to move on from the 'sit back unless behind' approach.
July 14, 20241 yr Spain :cheer: They way their top players are so young yet so cohesive. They are gonna be a lot of trouble for any contry in the coming years. They way they are able to control the play in most of their games is amazing. As much as I am laughing at England losing cause I am a petty bitch like that. Netherlands would'nt have fared much better. Spain were always the one to beat. Also I made nearly 100 euros from this games, so I cannot complain
July 14, 20241 yr I said it a few days ago that the only chance England had to win this match was if they played better than Spain on the day and "individual moments" wouldn't be enough against a team like this. Spain were the better team for the vast majority of the match and for the tournament as a whole they really deserved this victory. With how young their players are and the high level they are performing at now I think they would have a really good chance of winning the 2026 World Cup. Nico Williams was man of the match imo as he looked the most dangerous out of all Spain's players from very early on in the match. The wait goes on for England but Euro 2028 could be where it comes to an end. If they don't win that then you'd have to think maybe it could be decades from now until they win a major tournament.

I reckon we're well set up to be there or thereabouts for a while now, obviously we've had a great run these past few tournaments post Euro 2016. But it's only really been that period from 2007 to 2016 where we were absolutely dreadful on the international scene and a lot of that was our coaching not adapting to the changing times, which is happening again now. Southgate has donw a great job, but it's time to move on now. As much as Spain were the better team here, we were so passive and set out to play for penalties - momentum is a huge thing in football and the fact we gave it up so easy after Palmer scored is coward tactics. None of our players really suit playing in an ultra conservative way, Kane especially doesn't at his age these days.
July 15, 20241 yr  this is the strangest post I’ve ever read in the sports forum Even if this was true, you’ve definitely gone out of your way to make a stranger one. The point you quoted is extremely valid and your post is something that definitely didn’t need saying.

Yeh injury or not Kane wasn’t the player who scored 40 Bundesliga goals this season, he thrives better when the balls around the box as he’s still the best finisher in Europe imo.
July 15, 20241 yr Congrats to Spain, fully deserved win. They've put together the most impressive international tournament in the history of the sport. Only Brazil 2002 also won 7 games out of 7 but they had a much easier run to the final. Credit to Southgate and the team, didn't think we'd get as far as the final but just have to hold our hands up and say we lost to a better outfit. You have to thin Euro 2028 will be our last chance now with another shot with home advantage. WC 2026 will suit the South America teams more.
July 15, 20241 yr Looks like the pubs being open properly this time (rather than still having some social distancing as in 2021) and it being won in normal time has put a massive dent in the viewing figures. Down to 23.74m peak (compared to 30.9m for 2021). Definitely reflects the fact this felt like less of a big occasion than the 2021 Euros final. Edited July 15, 20241 yr by DoBelieveTheHype
July 15, 20241 yr I think people now "expect" England to reach finals, so good luck to the guy after Southgate!
July 15, 20241 yr I think people now "expect" England to reach finals, so good luck to the guy after Southgate! I think this has always been the case though, especially as one of the big 5 European nations. We’re never going to win a Championship under Southgate. I’d like us to try and think of a bit of an identity for how we might want to play at an FA level rather than who knows what we’re currently trying to do (which nobody really knows).
July 15, 20241 yr Why are England never going to win under Southgate when he seems to have a much better record than other managers? Every championship every team bar one loses - and we’ve come second twice in a row… I think that’s great personally and I wouldn’t gamble it away by swapping Southgate for anyone else when the odds are that a replacement manager would be less successful (ps not specifically at you Roo, but your comment resonated with lots of things on my feeds today)
