Sabrina Carpenter could be looking at her third #1 of the year today with Taste, unless a reset for former #1 Please Please Please puts a spanner in the works?

170x170bb.jpg

Chase & Status and Stormzy could complete the top 3.

170x170bf.jpgB5zDYsi.png170x170bb.jpg

New entries could come from Sabrina Carpenter; Coldplay, Little Simz, Burna Boy, Elyanna and TINI; and perhaps some Oasis classics...!

Sabrina Carpenter's debut at the top isn't in doubt, but just how much will she have sold?

170x170cc.jpg170x170bb.jpg

Fontaines D.C. and Oasis could complete the top 3.

Biography

A singer and songwriter whose sweetly sad tunes are warm and emotionally open, Myles Smith blends the gentle passion of his vocals with music that incorporates elements of contemporary folk, indie pop, and a dash of Americana. After finding an audience through social media, he has developed an international following for his acoustic-based songs that won him a major-label contract, as tunes like "Solo" and "My Home" became major hits. - Apple Music

Fontaines D.C.

In The Modern World

WafdsFw.png

Instant grat from Romance

Released: 20th August 2024

Label: Sony Music Entertainment UK

Video

Biography

The very first words we hear on the first song on the first album from Fontaines D.C. are “Dublin in the rain is mine”—and with that line, from the underdog fight song “Big,” the group instantly seized the title of Ireland’s pre-eminent dark-skied post-punk poets. Their 2019 Mercury Prize-nominated debut, Dogrel, arrived in a crowded field of cantankerous indie bands from the British and Emerald Isles wielding jagged guitar riffs, bass-battered rhythms, and shouty sing-speak. But behind the Mark E. Smith-like bark of frontman Grian Chatten beat the heart of a true romantic enamored with his hometown’s local landmarks and working-class heritage, while singles like “Boys in the Better Land” and “Liberty Belle” counterbalance their withering social commentary with invigorating doses of, respectively, British Invasion-style garage rock and surf music. The follow-up, A Hero’s Death, arrived just a year later with Fontaines’ switchblade-edge intact, but also showcased a band moving beyond their signature rant ‘n’ roll to explore brooding balladry and more atmospheric production, en route to a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. - Apple Music

Look at that 6 copies separating The 411 and Maroon 5 in 2004! :o

My top 3 songs from each retro chart:

2023

01. Peggy Gou - (It Goes Like) Nanana

02. Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For?

03. Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer

Hearing 'Cruel Summer' live a couple of weeks ago was indeed a moment - the crowd was electric during the bridge

2019

01. Sam Smith - How Do You Sleep?

02. AJ Tracey - Ladbroke Grove

03. Dominic Fike - 3 Nights

'How Do You Sleep?' is my favourite solo Sam song to date. I really appreciated the change in direction after finding the previous era dull.

2014

01. Wankelmut - My Head Is A Jungle (feat. Emma Louise)

02. Lilly Wood & Robin Schulz - Prayer In C

03. David Guetta - Lovers On The Sun (feat. Sam Martin)

This year was a pretty good one for commercial dance music. 10 years since Jameela's obsession with Lilly Wood meeting in a Parisian café

2009

01. Beyoncé - Sweet Dreams

02. Little Boots - Remedy

03. Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling

I don't think I cared that much about 'Remedy' at the time but I appreciate it a lot more nowadays.

2004

01. Sugababes - Caught In A Moment

02. The 411 - Dumb

03. Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved

I found this week the most difficult to order but I do have a bit of a soft spot for 'Caught In A Moment'.

1999

01. Bran Van 3000 - Drinking In L.A.

02. DJ Jurgen presents Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone

03. Shaft - (Mucho Mambo) Sway

'Drinking In L.A.' is such a gem  must not spiral over the fact I'm now older than the 26 years mentioned in the song x

1994

01. Warren G - Regulate (feat. Nate Dogg)

02. Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds

03. Blur - Parklife

'7 Seconds' is an absolute stunner and I admire its slow-burn chart run!

Biography

When Austin Post uploaded “White Iverson” to social media in early 2015, he was 19, scrounging for ramen and sleeping in a friend’s closet. Plenty has changed, but Post’s appeal is more or less the same. No matter how Platinum the records go, he still has the air of an ordinary guy, a Crocs-and-Bud Light kid from the suburbs who stumbled backward into fame just by strumming what was in his heart. Post didn’t just look beyond genre, he broke it down, mixing the dark grandeur of trap with the anthemic release of classic rock and country. His signature tracks—“rockstar”, “Sunflower”, “Congratulations”—were both bleak and beautiful, spaced-out and mainstream, hip-hop but not quite. The bass boomed, the melodies soared, and there was Post in the middle, rap-singing his woes like a lonely prince self-exiled in the castle. At live shows, there were no dancers, no pyrotechnics, just Post, in a baggy football jersey with a cigarette in his hand, bringing 60,000 people into his bedroom: The pop star as moody teen. Born in 1995 in Syracuse, New York, and raised in the suburbs of Dallas, Post grew up on a mix of country, classic rock and rap: In one well-circulated anecdote, young Post would get called into the living room to entertain Dad and friends with the dance to Terror Squad’s “Lean Back”. He turned a love for the video game Guitar Hero into a love of actual guitar, playing in a metal band during high school while also starting to explore hip-hop. “White Iverson” led to Post’s 2016 debut, Stoney; beerbongs & bentleys burrowed further into Post’s luxurious, messy melancholy, while 2019’s Hollywood’s Bleeding found him buttoning up and moving closer to the conventions of mainstream pop, all while retaining his peculiar touch. - Apple Music

Biography

Los Angeles singer/songwriter Gracie Abrams has a talent for cutting to the quick. A song about a breakup’s messy aftermath, “21” opens bluntly with the line: “I missed your 21st birthday.” Another song about finding it hard to move on revolves around the simple admission, “I miss you, I’m sorry.” Abrams’ swift incisions are particularly notable given that her father is director J.J. Abrams, whose television series Lost boasted such ingeniously convoluted plotlines. Born in 1999, the Los Angeles native grew up listening to Joni Mitchell and Elliott Smith, but it wasn’t until she discovered Phoebe Bridgers, at age 13, that she began writing her own songs. She wrote “minor”—about a crush who lived too far away for her to visit before curfew—at age 17. “It was the first time that I’d written a song where I felt like I wasn’t trying to emulate someone else’s sound,” she tells Apple Music. Even Abrams’ early singles display a wisdom beyond her years. Released when she was 20, “21” revolves around the devastating line, “You’ll be the love of my life when I was young”—an elegant example of her knack for turning an idea as simple as “young love” into a complex meditation on life’s changes. “Looking back is unattractive to me,” she acknowledges, yet while preparing her first long-form statement—2020’s minor—she realized she needed to reflect to move forward. “Thinking about what that meant and how the songs needed to exist together,” she says, the experience of writing “minor” as a teen never went away. “It was always in the back of my head. I didn’t want to run away from it.” - Apple Music

Biography

As Noah Kahan changes, he casts those experiences onto songs like light through a film projector. At the core of the music’s upbeat energy and unfiltered lyrics, you’ll hear who he was before and who he became — almost in real-time. The Vermont singer still pens songs straight from the heart and still cracks jokes with his signature, self-deprecating sense of humor; he’s just changed in all of the right ways (and chronicled them via his songwriting). He gained that understanding through quite the journey from small town Vermont to global renown. He’s racked up over one billion streams, released two full length albums (Busyhead, 2019 and I Was/I Am, 2021) and a mid-pandemic EP (Cape Elizabeth, 2020), picked up a Gold Certification for “Hurt Somebody” feat. Julia Michaels, and performed on television shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Kelly Clarkson Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and TODAY. Not to mention, he’s collaborated with everyone from Joy Oladokun to Chelsea Cutler to mxmtoon to Quinn XCII to Gryffin. After 5 years of critical acclaim and global touring, he sought an even purer style of writing and arrangement, a challenge from within to convey a vivid representation of what he loves, fears, and struggles with most passionately. Now, Noah continues to progress with his highly anticipated new album Stick Season out now. - Spotify
