I think Gareth may get a reasonably big first single as it's a comeback, sort of like All Saints did with 'Rock Steady', nothing major but top 5 and falling fast. Then I think the album will totally bomb as will further singles or the last single...

All Saints was a huge airplay hit and were everywhere. Gareth won't. Not a chance

Who said we needed more female solo pop artists? This is a thread about Gareth, and you've tried to introduce David Bowie into it. I know he did the whole androgenous thing, but I don't think that counts.

I do wonder if you are reading the same thread as the rest of us.

BTW, I was already grown-up when Gareth first hit the charts. :P

You said we don't need more solo artists dedicated OF's

I said I didn't like the individual artist forums. I'm far more likely to read about an artist (solo, group, male, female) if there is a thread in Pop, rather than filed away in their own, dedicated space and I think the place suffers because of the segregation.

I doubt Gareth's airplay will be as good as All Saints, but Gareth never did get good airplay. I think he stands a decent chance of reasonable airplay this time round, because he's moved away from Simon Cowell, which was always held against him. It just depends how open minded the playlist people are.

I agree with you Nosey. In the open Pop forum, you get views from both fans and those who aren't fans. We may not like or agree with some of the things said, but its more refreshing and interesting than being shut away in forums where I believe posts are only encouraged by fans of the artist and are more like an appreciation thread, rather than a discussion. I do occasionally look and post in a couple of OF if they interest me, but I prefer the Pop forum.

I think Gareth will fare better with airplay this time. Maybe not to the extent that some artists do. But he will be able to do interviews comfortably now and hopefully chat lengthily with the DJ's, whereas before as we all know it was very difficult him make an interview interesting. The DJ's love someone to spend time with them and have a laugh and a joke. I'm sure they'll get that from Gareth this time.

Not having a go here Val but do you really think so.

In my experience a lot of dj's aren't that amiable. Maybe Gareth will fair better.

Actually, yes, I do think so. Gareth has told his fans lots of times, of all the requests he had to do interviews on Radio Stations. Interviews which he was unable to fulfil because of his speech problems. That obstacle won't be in the way this time, so lets hope those DJ's repeat their invitations.

I'm sure lots will and I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who will be wanting to hear what Gareth has got to say after five years. And the DJ's will know that :D

I'm sure you are right Val & he will be invited on their shows. It's the way that some artists are treated by djs that I was referring to, especially the snide comments afterwards.

A necessary evil I suppose to generate airplay. As I said earlier maybe they will be kinder to Gareth.

I think it might depend on the actual dj, I dont suppose everyone will be friendly, all depends also on what mood the dj is in.

I think we just have to hope that they will play Gareth, radio play is quite important to reach the general public.

I suppose basically, it really depends on what the DJ's really think about the artist they are interviewing, what they say after they've done their interviews.

If they make snide comments afterwards it will interpret to me that they didn't like him very much. Which is their prerogative. Their listeners can make up their own minds.

It depends on whether the DJ is interested in the music or the private life of the person they are 'interviewing' and whether that person is amiable or is slated afterwards as rude and difficult because they only want to promote their product. Some of these commercial radio DJs think it is their right to ask impertinent questions and get arsey when they don't get an answer.

Good luck to Gareth - I like the snippets of songs that I have heard. I'm not a fan of his and don't like his vocals but his new stuff seems quite good.

I think Gareth has always made it quite plain that he won't talk about his private life, but I don't think there has ever been any occasion where anyone, DJ or otherwise, has ever said he was rude or difficult because of it. But like you say, I'm sure they would have, if he had of been.

There's always the risk that a DJ might be arsy about a guest after they have left, but if they are that way inclined, they will probably have been arsy about them anyway. At least this way, the listeners get to hear them in interview for themselves, and the interview itself, plus mentions of it in advance, all act as promotion.

There are very few examples I can remember of a DJ being snidey about a guest after they have left, but I remember a lot of cases where DJs were left impressed by a person they were indifferent to before that interview, and who go on to talk about them and their music positively for some time afterwards.

It can be tedious to singers, actors and their fans when DJs would rather talk about what seems irrelevant, rather than the song, or film, which they are there to promote, but realistically, anyone using a radio show to promote what they are doing has to accept that the radio station's priority is to get you to talk about things that will interest all of their listeners, which will extend beyond whatever is being promoted. That doesn't mean you have to answer all the questions asked, but you shouldn't be suprised that they might want to ask the more juicy stuff.

One big problem with a radio tour is that all the DJs will ask the same questions, which must get dull, but that's not the DJs fault. They are there to ask on behalf of their listeners, who they can reasonably assume have not listened to all the other interviews the person did that morning. However, I think that's a problem that Gareth is looking forward to facing. :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Gareth has finally gotten around to putting some short clips (and I mean short) of some of his new songs on his Myspace page http://www.myspace.com/garethgatesmyspace

He's put on two songs which were included on the Documentary, but he's also put two others which weren't.

`Pictures Of The Other Side' which was a lot of people's favourite when they heard it at the Gig, and `Lost In You'.

I really love the sound of `Lost In You'. It was the first time I've heard it and its very different

He's put up a different section of`Changes'. Its a much slower and very haunting song, which Gareth has said means so much to him

That sounds like the very end of Changes. It's definitely slower than the clips we've heard before. The first time I heard that bit it seemed odd, but now it's just very lush.

The other clips sound different too, lol. Angel on My Shoulder sounds quite epic! I really need to hear the full versions. :cheer:

I am loving 'Pictures on the other side' and 'Lost in you', really cant wait for this album.

I have listened to the samples of Gareth's music on his My Space and I love Lost in You and Changes. I would have prefered that he released 19 minutes as his comeback single but I love his new sound and will definately be buying his music in April when he releases.

None of the samples appeal to me much, they're all meh and his voice doesn't sound any different to me, Lost In You is about the best, it should be the 1st single.

Have to disagree with you here. On the samples that I have heard Gareth's voice has matured. He is a talented singer that is able to both express wamth and emotion in his voice and this comes across in his new material.

I love Gareth's voice, but understand not everyone will like him, and I am sure those who have always found fault will continue to find something to criticise. ;)

I think it is of note that a number of people who were neutral towards previous material has said they have liked what they've heard.

I love Gareth's voice

No surprise here, but I love it too and what I think is so wonderful about these songs is the fact he's kept that beautiful quality to his voice, whilst managing to insert so much more power into it. Whereas before it was a beautiful voice of a very young man, now its a beautiful voice of a very mature one.

I think `Lost In You' will make an excellent single at some stage. The clips of `Changes' which were shown on the Documentary were haunting to say the least, but the more I listen to this new 30 second clip, which Gareth has put up, the more it penetrates right into my heart. No other ballad has had that effect on me for many years. Can't stop listening to it  I really hope he puts the whole song up over the next week or so.
