April 4, 200718 yr Why have Radio 2 dropped Angel on my Shoulder off their playlist and not bothered to add Changes? I quite like the Angel one. :o
April 4, 200718 yr I also think Angel on my shoulder is a great track, but it says on radio 2 site that they only ever play album tracks for 2 weeks max. Changes really is not getting any air play to speak of. :(
April 4, 200718 yr Changes isn't being playlisted because it's not really good enough - bottom line. Angel On My Shoulder is good enough - much better song for radio. Maybe there was a deal struck - Gareth attends radio 2 show - radio play AOMS for a couple of weeks. It's a shame for Gareth - other artists with worse songs get airplay - Lemar's Tick Tock for example
April 4, 200718 yr Changes is a good song. It's got a quirky thing going on. It just hasn't had any airplay. Probably Sony BMG have put a stop on it. Simon Cowell will not want Gareth to succeed.

It 's a shame Gareth isn't getting good airplay but your statement is utterly ridiculous. Gareth never got good airplay apart from Sunshine (most tv talent contestants suffer the same fate) & he's been off the scene for over 3 years so although unfair I'm sure they are the main reasons.

I'm not sure about your suggestion about the airplay because that is obviously a huge barrier for Gareth to crack, but the fact that music channels like The Box and Smash Hits have not playlisted Changes makes me think you could very well be right. Gareth's previous material was probably more successful on those channels than almost any other artist, yet they have chosen not to play him. Something does not add up here. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Simon Cowell will not want Gareth to be successful and I'm also in no doubt that if he can do anything to stop it he will. Which is very sad and very petty. But its not the first time this has happened and I doubt it will be the last. Its quite appalling that anyone (if this is the case) can have so much power to be able to destroy a person's attempt to release the music they are happy with. I'm really not holding out too many hopes of Changes doing too well with the lack of support its had from the Radio stations and Music channels. I just hope a second single is released quite quickly which will be given more of a chance. Gareth has said that this initial promotion is about letting people see his personality, so perhaps he and his management won't be looking on it as a disaster if Changes only makes it into the lower regions of the chart next week. I think at the moment I'll be pleased to see it in the top 20.
April 4, 200718 yr Dindy, I think you are too late for the day with Gareth. I think that is happening this afternoon. I was able to get the single from iTunes last night. Love Song is brilliant. It is a very different style to Changes, and shows off another aspect to his voice. Oh sorry I missed that. Would love to spend a day with Gareth, in the pub sharing a few beers. I have downloaded from Itunes now too. Thanks. Bit dissapointed not to see make any dent in the Itunes Download chart. I can't see how airplay can pick up either. Last week he was accused of getting his ar*se around the record stations and now he has done that they are still not adding him to their playlists :( . Edited April 4, 200718 yr by dindy
April 4, 200718 yr I think top 20 is where it will chart but top 10 would be more ideal Blimey at this rate I would be delighted with top 40. So sorry for answering my own post. I'm not full of my own importance just wanted to answer Feel the Fever. Edited April 4, 200718 yr by dindy
April 4, 200718 yr Well I think with all the tv & mag exposure & the single signings he might just scrape into the top 10. You really don't need to sell that many for a top 10 placing. Edited April 4, 200718 yr by truly talented
April 4, 200718 yr I do think the Simon Cowell conspiracy theory is a bit OTT :o I doubt he's given GG a thought, to be honest.
April 5, 200718 yr I don't think it's so much a conspiracy theory, more acknowledging that throughout the history of popular music, there have been behind the scenes deals going on. Whether or not that is true in this case is only ever going to be speculation, but it would be embarassing for Simon if Gareth did very well without him. But he has had much better press than someone like Steve, who I think was deliberately excluded by the media, but then Steve managed to turn the media against him all on his own. Slagging off a man who is looked after by Max Clifford is not the best way to endear yourself to the popular press. Gareth rarely got good airplay in the past, but there always used to be TOTP and CD:UK, and Gareth always topped the video request charts on the major channels for the singles buying public, so it is all a bit of an unknown quantity without any of that. I don't think Radio 2 were playing Angel on My Shoulder because Gareth was going on Steve Wright. It seems to have been arranged at the last minute after they saw him on Jonathon Ross and thought they'd like him as a guest. They actually played Changes when he was on. I think they just liked the song, probably assumed the album was coming out soon, and decided to support that instead. I'm very disappointed with the whole airplay and video play thing. I'm the first to acknowledge it's not a massively commercial sound, but as someone else said, the stations often overlook that kind of thing if it is by an artist they expect to add to the playlist, often regardless of how well they actually chart. On the other hand, I'm really happy that a lot of people who used to sneer about Gareth as a person are now being nice about him. I don't think that will translate to many extra CD sales at this point, but no matter how well Gareth does, he never deserved to be a figure of hate. I also think it is of note that the album has been bobbing about surprisingly high on the amazon charts, considering it isn't released until July!
April 5, 200718 yr I think Changes is a great song, I love it, and got a real good review from Music week calling it classy, and quality from start to finish, but its not instantly catchy and therefore not what they call radio friendly? Don't know too much about that to be honest. And Angel on my shoulder is more catchy and I think a brilliant track that hopefully will be a single one day. I am pleased to hear that people are pre-ordering the album already. I am just hoping Changes will not do too badly. :(
April 5, 200718 yr I do think the Simon Cowell conspiracy theory is a bit OTT :o I doubt he's given GG a thought, to be honest. So does that mean you don't think Simon would resort to using his connections when things don't work out the way he wants
April 5, 200718 yr I've really really tried to like this song but i've failed. It's bloody dire. Awful awful awful.
April 5, 200718 yr So does that mean you don't think Simon would resort to using his connections when things don't work out the way he wants  Would there be a financial gain? I doubt anything would motivate Simon if there wasn't a huge payoff at the end of it. Gareth, unfortunately, has exactly the same problem as Darius had when he released last time. It's totally unfair, especially when you hear some of the stuff that they do support, but I don't think there's any conspiracy, other than the stations wanting to exercise the power they have to control the musical airwaves.
April 5, 200718 yr Like Simon Cowell giving an interview to the tabloids lambasting Darius's album before it was even released? Haven't seen that from Simon, YET! Darius also suffered from a poor choice of lead single - not true of Gareth. Changes is a good track but just isn't getting airplay or video play. When D's Kinda Love was initially released to the radio stations, it had an innovative production technique of double tracking which was then spliced together again, deliberately just slightly out of synch. The producers might have thought it was a technical triumph but frankly even D's most ardent fans thought it just made him sound as if he was singing out of tune. When it was clear most DJs etc. thought the same, Mercury tried to limit the damage by discouraging airplay and scrambled to replace the promo which took about a fortnight. Much too late - the damage was already done - the first version from the radio was the one that was all over the internet. Unlike Changes, Kinda Love still got video play on all the main music stations but in the UK it's radio airplay that counts. I'm not sure if KL registered on the airplay chart at all, but I do know that Live Twice, which was a much better song, only scraped into no.98 during the week of release. April 5, 200718 yr Like Simon Cowell giving an interview to the tabloids lambasting Darius's album before it was even released? Haven't seen that from Simon, YET! There wouldn't have been any financial gain to Simon by doing that would there. But didn't Darius refuse to sign a deal with Simon and BMG initially. As for The Box and Emap, having control over their musical airwaves hasn't stopped them from raking in the money from advertising Changes has it. I assume they won't have done so for free and there's probably a lot more money involved there, than a few £1's from requests  Obviously its going to take a little while for Gareth to overturn the preconceptions the powers behind the radio stations have of him and his music. I'm sure he'll achieve it eventually after all he is only 22 still. There's plenty of time for him to have a very fulfilling career producing music he enjoys and also having the opportunity to show his talents instrumentally. Possibly a factor in the choice of Changes, where Gareth is able to play piano when singing live, which he's done on every appearance he's done so far. Gareth is not just a singer, he's a musician :D
