Isn't it possible that "Changes" never got playlisted because it isn't particularly good? Well in the eyes of the target audience for the music channels anyway. They playlist videos which will make them the most revenue from people who request the tracks. I'm sorry but this track simply doesn't appeal to the music channel's primary audience [i.e. the youth market]. The song itself is VERY old for him imo and would sound totally out of place on the likes of Radio 1, The Box etc.

"Changes" was a shoddy choice of lead single, he should have gone with something far more up-beat and well noticeable. Its NO surprise to see it "flopping", as I rightly predicted it would earlier in this thread.

There wouldn't have been any financial gain to Simon by doing that would there. But didn't Darius refuse to sign a deal with Simon and BMG initially.

As for The Box and Emap, having control over their musical airwaves hasn't stopped them from raking in the money from advertising Changes has it. I assume they won't have done so for free and there's probably a lot more money involved there, than a few £1's from requests

Obviously its going to take a little while for Gareth to overturn the preconceptions the powers behind the radio stations have of him and his music. I'm sure he'll achieve it eventually after all he is only 22 still. There's plenty of time for him to have a very fulfilling career producing music he enjoys and also having the opportunity to show his talents instrumentally. Possibly a factor in the choice of Changes, where Gareth is able to play piano when singing live, which he's done on every appearance he's done so far.

Gareth is not just a singer, he's a musician :D

Not financial gain for SC but just maybe something else.

X-Factor was either on the air or about to launch (Steve Brookstein released his single the same week or the week before Live Twice) and SC was in a legal wrangle with Darius's joint manager, Simon Fuller, whose 19 Recordings/Records owned all of the copyrights to D's recordings including the new album. It wouldn't be good timing for someone who'd publicly turned him down to pop up again. Two for the price of one. Bargain!

I've no idea if Gareth is similarly signed to 19 and then a licence and distribution deal done with Universal.

Gareth has taken a brave decision. He's a mature young man and he's gone with his core values, rather than living the dream in the spotlight, chasing more fame and more riches. He's done all that and knows it didn't bring him the happiness his more balanced lifestyle does now.

It must be such a buzz to create something, especially something as personal as music from scratch. Lots of people can write lyrics but real creativity is in building the whole song organically, experimenting with drum patterns, piano and keyboard chords and melodies, electric guitar riffs, classical and acoustic guitars, all of which Gareth can do on his own or with others. Then come the different production techniques. Instead of not hearing his vocals again until the single is pressed or being told this is how it's going to be, Gareth will have an input and be able to craft the songs his way.

I'll be buying Changes and the album as soon as it's released.

Loving your Darius theories Baytree. I've so missed them.

Still if they are talented enough those who turn their back on Cowell can still make it big or maybe your just better off never having his support in the beginning.

I think people need to face up to the fact that both Darius and Gareth need a good sized fanbase and great songs. full Stop. Not even the might of Simon Cowell could prevail against those!!! LOL. Simon never supported Will and was left with egg on his face when Will came back with great music for his second album, and with his fanbase not only intact, but growing healthily as a result.

As for Kinda Love - my mum says 'you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear' - however it was produced it would have been the same rubbish song! Changes is far superior as a song, but still not good enough and it remains to be seen how many fans Gareth has lost and won since his last release.

God! this thread is in danger of drowning, it's like a sticky toffee pudding, way too much syrup and treacle and I'm beginning to feel quite ill. :puke2:

If you like Gareth's song buy it, if you don't like it fair enough, but all these past laments and excuses from Darius fans isn't being fair to Gareth in my opinion, whose songs I'm not keen on but the lyrics and music are more bearable to listen to than any of Darius's were.

Now that really is a jem. I thought you liked syrup and sticky toffee pudding Suggy

Odd you and a few of your OF members have started to post in the thread again this week. You all seem to have been noticeably absent most of the time Gareth has been promoting :o

I suppose I shouldn't really be surprised should I. In fact it would have been more surprising (or indeed almost unheard of) if the posse hadn't returned this week under the circumstances :D

We can't win can we. If we do post we get wrong & when we don't we still get wrong. I actually thought you'd be happy we weren't sharing our thoughts on the promo. My only contribution to this thread has been to say I think Gareth could possibly scrape into the top 10 due to his signings & tv coverage & that the lack of airplay has been unfair. I probably wouldn't have commented further if the fairytales hadn't been posted.

Anyway I leave you all to it.

In what way do you consider the song old for him?

Would Gareth ever be considered for the Radio 1 playlist do you think?

I am sure Changes wasn't a shoddy choice of single. I expect great thought was given into it's being chosen but I do wonder if Gareth was making a statement by choosing it. In the past he has been accused of being a puppet. Perhaps it is his way of stamping his feet and showing everyone that win or lose he is going to have a say?

Just what I wanted to say...I kept away from this thread so as not to spoil the GG fans enjoyment of his promo

Very kind of you. So what's changed your mind now then

I see we're back to the disrespectful GG again :(

The usual suspects coming out of the woodwork I see. Hi there Marguerite.

Back to the subject. While I really like Changes now and lots of my mates have said that they like it and the video, I don't think it's going to chart high as it's definitely not aimed at the singles market. I don't know if it will matter because it's album sales that will count this time around for Gareth and, hopefully, with the release of the second single, this will provide a first step towards building up to people wanting the album. Lack of airplay has been shocking. The song is good enough to get played imo.

Have you considered just not commenting at all? It really is not compulsory to police the Gareth threads. Do you not think it looks a bit silly that 90% of the people who join in on Gareth threads who have the burning desire to find fault with him, his music and the fans just happen to be massive Will fans? Many of whom had plenty of conspiracy theories about Simon Cowell or how the industry in general was unfair to Will when it suited them. You might think you are poking fun at the silly Gareth fans, but in all honesty, you make yourselves look petty, bitter and obsessed. At least us fans are obsessed with someone we like, not someone we hate. Even if you aren't commenting, the same names are always reading, checking up on what is being said, waiting for an excuse to take us to talks on something.

Back to the topic at hand. I can understand that radio stations may decide that a song doesn't suit their audience without trying it out. That is the way of radio these days, but channels like The Box only need to play the songs that their viewers request. If none of their viewers want to see the video, they wouldn't request it and they wouldn't need to play it. Given that Gareth's videos always did so well in the past, I don't think it's that mad an idea to hope that the playlist people might try it out for a week to see what happens, instead of assuming it won't get requests. If there are not enough requests, they could take it off the following week with good justification. Instead, the video is getting a lot of requests on the minority of channels that have it.

I'm not really one for grand conspiracy theories, but there will always be PR people striking deals and some will do a better job for their artists than others. There will always be playlist people who think they know what's best and who will stubbornly refuse to budge. The person at Radio 1 who decided that Shakira wouldn't be popular with their listeners, and who refused to add her week after week would be one example.

Sorry Dudie, I crossed posts with you. I do think you are right that the promotion seems more suited to the album buying audience. It's strange, because a few years ago the media all decided that Gareth's fans were only silly little girls, and so anyone a little bit older was made to feel stupid if they liked him. Now they seem to be going for the opposite approach, but it's equally incorrect. The fact is, Gareth's music appeals to a wide range of people, but another unfortunate fact is that some people struggle with liking music that older and/or younger people also like. I know when I was a younger teen, I hated what my older brother liked and vice versa, and in all honesty we were both guilty of being closed to liking what the other liked.

Your post changed my mind...you seem to think we all kept away because he was doing so well...and then we get accused of posting because his single now does not look to be doing so well :(

I can honestly say I kept away because the GG fans seemed to be so happy with his return ...I can only imagine how happy i would be if my fav disappeared for years and then new promo started...I would be estatic....

So why join in now? Did you think we were too happy and needed a good dose of miserable bickering to remind us of how it always used to be whenever Gareth got any attention?

I'm still ecstatic, irrespective of where the single charts. :cheer:

I wouldn't put it quite the way you have. Gareth didn't disappear, he just had other more important priorities in his life. I would have waited much longer if necessary

Changes is a good song. It's got a quirky thing going on. It just hasn't had any airplay. Probably Sony BMG have put a stop on it. Simon Cowell will not want Gareth to succeed.

I haven't commented previously (although I have been reading the thread) because I'm only mildly interested in whether Gareth succeeds with his comeback, but this comment puzzled me.

Maybe I'm being dense, but I really don't understand why anyone would think that Simon Cowell gave a rat's arse about Gareth. They don't work together anymore, I know, but I've never heard any major slagging off from either party ....... and what would be SC's motivation for wanting Gareth to fail? If he doesn't stand to make or lose money out of it, I would imagine it's not even on his radar.

As for Changes...... doesn't do much for me, but good luck to the boy.

Well I hardly post but for goodness sake..................................

The song's c**p and no body is interested. Have as many theories as you like but it won't change anything. Video channels and radio ststions usually have a good ided about what will sell.

I kept out of these threads out of respect for those FEW GG fans who would be sincerely chuffed to see him back. You crones and DD ones have spoilt that.

I love changes and I love Angel on my shoulder, and on the Music control site they have 2 videos of Gareth performing those songs for them. I just love it, mind Gareth does look funny in his hat, lol Must have had cold ears, :yahoo:
