March 2, 200718 yr Manchester Evening News  Boy trapped in theatre Yakub Qureshi 2/ 3/2007 A SCHOOLBOY who trapped a finger in a metal grille during a performance narrowly avoided bringing the house down. The teenage boy was sitting in the balcony at Manchester's Royal Exchange when he became stuck on a safety panel. Despite his discomfort, the 15-year-old, who was on a school trip to see the play The Vortex, waited until the interval before alerting others to his predicament. Front-of-house staff tried to free the schoolboy from his seat using lubricant and ice cubes. But when he could not be moved, staff unscrewed the protective grille, which is used to prevent audience members in the upper tiers of the theatre from falling, and took the boy and the panel to the theatre's green room. Five firefighters were called to the theatre in St Ann's Square, and used cutting gear to free the boy. He was checked by paramedics and allowed home. Drama The Noel Coward play starring former TV talent show winner Will Young continued for the second half. A theatre spokesman said: "There was drama frontstage and there was drama backstage. Whatever discomfort he was in, the lad managed to contain himself before sheepishly telling his teacher that he was trapped. "He was trapped for about an hour. The fire brigade managed to free him just as the play was finishing so he was able to go home after being checked out by a paramedic." Mr Young made his theatrical debut in the play, which tells the story of a middle-class family in the 1920s, and has received a mixed reception from reviewers.

March 3, 200718 yr Thanks to Ros who found this review in a magazine (All about Manchester) in her hotel room. It's a monthly guide to events in Manchester Theatre review of the month The Vortex @ The Royal Exchange Four stars (out of five) When the Vortex premiered in 1924 it made playwright Noel Coward an overnight sensation on both sides of the Atlantic with its bold references to drug abuse, homosexuality and promiscuity among the British high society. Today the play is not quite as controversial as it once was, but it is still very absorbing. The cast perform well, especially Diana Hardcastle as Florence Lancaster - an ageing beauty, who whiles away her life with cocktails and extramarital affairs with young lovers to sustain her illusion of youth. Alexandra Mathie gives a very strong performance as Helen Saville -Florence's loyal but bitterly candid friend. And pop star Will Young's casting as Florence's son Nicky is not just a gimmick to put bums on seats. He is convincing as the spoilt, cocaine-addicted musician in desperate need of his mother's love, although his character is perhaps a bit more camp than Coward intended. The play is skilfully directed by Jo Combes, and beautifully designed by Les Brotherston. All in all, a very stylish, unexpectedly moving and utterly watchable show.
