It's a fourth consecutive week at number one for Manchester based musician Jasmine Cruickshank (jasmine.4.t) who writes about the melancholia, heartache, camaraderie and isolation of transfeminine life. Of the tender and bittersweet single “Elephant” − the Christmas number one for 2024 − she writes: “I wrote ‘Elephant’ very early in my transition about my first t4t love. It’s about when it hurts because you’re trying to be friends but you both want to be more. My life in Bristol fell apart when I came out and, having no safe place to live, I was staying on queers’ sofas in Manchester, traumatized and in no place to start a relationship. It was beyond healing recording this track in LA with Phoebe, Lucy, and Julien, along with my Manchester dolls Eden and Phoenix, and with extra layers from local trans musicians Vixen, Bobby, Addy and of course the incredible Trans Chorus of Los Angeles.” Her debut album You Are The Morning was produced by Boygenius and is due to be released on 17 January 2025.

Moving up from 4-2 is the lead single from Hayden Anhedönia's (Ethel Cain) new album Perverts (due 8 January 2025), the outstanding and gritty “Punish” which seems an apt song to be released at a time within a world with increasing impunity. Also climbing into the Top 3 is the iconic Nigerian/British singer and songwriter Sade with the devastatingly beautiful dedication to her trans-son Izaak Adu “Young Lion”. The single is part of a recently released compilation TRAИƧA − which consists of contributions from over 100 artists aiming to raise awareness and to celebrate the trans community. All of this means that shockingly FKA twigs is out of the Top 3 for the first time in twelve weeks.. though despite “Eusexua” slipping 3-5 on its fifteenth week, new single “Perfect Stranger” dances from 26-18 to compensate. The 7-week residency at number 1 for “Eusexua” is the longest of the year and the longest since The Horrors (down 30-38 this week with new single “The Silence That Remains”) spent a septenary of weeks at number 1 with “Something To Remember Me By” in autumn 2017.

With the traditional sparsely populated release schedule at the fading of the year, we are treated to only 3 double-digit climbs this week, and all are from festive offerings. Leading the charge are New Jersey's Bleachers with “Merry Christmas, Please Don't Call” sleighing up from 22-12. It likely peaking this week due to the next chart being published after the nations Christmas wrapping paper has been collected by the fleet of recycling lorries, meaning that they will not surpass their Dr B chart peak of #8 for “Don't Take The Money” in May 2017. Norwegian artist Susanne Sundfør recorded a new version of a traditional Nordic hymn “Deilig er jorden” (translated as: Beautiful is the Earth) which merrily jingles its way from 31-20. Susanne first charted in 2012 featuring on fellow Nords Röyksopp collaboration, the wonderful “Running to the Sea” which made it to #1. A recent performance of the single is linked below. Finally Brooklyn girl group Say She She enjoy some excellent festive tidings as they surge 40-27 with the yuletide double A-side “Purple Snowflakes / This Wintertime”. Purple Snowflakes is a Marvin Gaye cover and This Wintertime is an entirely new offering from the group. They scored 2 Top 10 hits last year with “C’est si Bon” becoming the biggest when it peaked at #7 in August.

Just five new entries break into the chart this week, the highest at 42 for Colombian producer Ela Minus, “Upwards” is the latest single from forthcoming album DIA and follows “Broken” (this week 28-30) which recently peaked at #6. Also returning are Kučka with “Fun!” (#44) the follow-up to “Wasting Time (til the world ends), #37; clipping. whose previous single “Run It” departs this week after a 14-week run and a peak of #4, with “Keep Pushing” entering at #45. There are chart debuts for NYC producer Rare DM and London based rapper/poet John Glacier who has announced debut album Like A Ribbon featuring contributions from Sampha and Eartheater is due out on 14 February 2025.

Thanks for reading! Happy Christmas and hope you have a great New Year with lots of new exciting music to listen to. <3
