Possibly it's a main reason, because I didn't start any "GD" charts for this beautiful decade. Based on my music preferences 70s is almost as good as 2000s, but many my favourites had flopped singles.Based on a quality of music my rate is possibly : 2000s = 1970s > 1980s > 1990s.But 90s charts are easiest for compiling and 1970s are the hardest one.New Seekers is the next act in my Singles discography rankings (after Girls Aloud) so I will listen / re-listen them more attentive. I was a huge New Seekers at the time but the singles are pretty much all you need, The late 70's line-up had some good tracks too, like Anthem and It's So Nice, but my fave era was 1970 to 1974. I havent completed my chart A to Z yet, but of the years I have finished, here's a bonus Discography of how the New Seekers did in my original charts:6   8   LOOK WHAT THEY’VE DONE TO MY SONG, MA   The New Seekers   274000   19701   15   NEVER ENDING SONG OF LOVE   The New Seekers   2047350   19711   17   I’D LIKE TO TEACH THE WORLD TO SING (IN PERFECT HARMONY)   The New Seekers   1462000   19718   5   GOOD OLD FASHIONED MUSIC   The New Seekers      19711   11   BEG, STEAL OR BORROW   The New Seekers   834400   19722   8   CIRCLES   The New Seekers   512200   19729   6   YOU WON'T FIND ANOTHER FOOL LIKE ME   The New Seekers      197325   2   WE’VE GOT TO DO IT NOW   The New Seekers      197316   6   PINBALL WIZARD/SEE ME FEEL ME   The New Seekers      19735   8   I GET A LITTLE SENTIMENTAL   The New Seekers   333600   19749   18   ANTHEM   The New Seekers      197870   2   LET THE BELLS RING OUT FOREVER   The New Seekers      19855   18   LOOK WHAT THEY'VE DONE TO MY SONG, MA   The New Seekers   280950   200923   5   COME SOFTLY TO ME   The New Seekers featuring Marty Kristian      197323   3   NEVERTHELESS (I'M IN LOVE WITH YOU)   The New Seekers/ Eve Graham      1973🙂
May 26, 2025May 26 Author 26th April 1975It's straight in at 1 for the single version of the greatest track on 10cc's The Original Soundtrack - the lush, multi-layered, haunting I'm Not In Love remains a work of genius, and moving in the sense that singing the title in this arrangement makes on not believe the actual statement as anything other than "he protests too much". 10cc were always willing to try something new, and challenge the norms of pop/rock/art music. Me, I have memories of revising for my GCE's at home alone as the rest of my family were on holiday, weather scorching and sweating, and 10cc being the UK's number one single. And lots of Instant Whips. And seeing what a frozen banana would taste like: hint, it turns to mush. Meanwhile, a single I bought and played a lot enters at 8, The Doobie Brothers cover of Take Me In Your Arms, one of their great (but forgotten) tracks. It's right up there with Long Train Running. The other big release of the week is the new ABBA album, one I would borrow in early 1976 as I was at peak ABBA, and record it until I could afford to buy it. So, the next 2 UK singles are being held back for later release, but the rest of the album (excepting those charts which have already charted) enters with my then-fave non-single (in the UK) the highest at 5: Bang-A-Boomerang. I still think that should have been a single instead of I Do I Do etc. Though maybe a bit too close to So Long to risk it. Others: Hey Hey Helen (17), pseudo-classical-instrumental Intermezzo Number 1 (45), Tropical Loveland (74) and the weakest track Man In The Middle (75). At this stage ABBA had no formula, they were happy to try different genres, lead vocals, and lyrics were improving, a work in progress. The next two singles, though, are in a completely new league, and set them up for greatness.New at 34. Lelly Boone got a Top Of The Pops slot with a song her husband Daniel was involved in, he of Beautiful Sunday, and some plays on Diddy David Hamilton's radio show, I seem to recall, but was a flop anyway, though it topped my charts of the time, a catchy little pop ditty. Send Some Love still sounds pleasant, though I clearly over-rated it a bit at the time as it had a great tune. Mac & Katie Kissoon get a follow-up hit in Don't Do It Baby, slightly more soul-leaning than Sugar Candy Kisses, Mike Batt drops his first Wombles single of 1975, and sadly it's not the fabulous cowboy Orinoco Kid album track, but as ever it's another completely new genre as we go back to the 1940's on Wombling White Tie And Tails. That leaves Gary Glitter to sabotage his own career nicely with the very substandard Love Like You & Me. It's almost as if The Glitter Band were getting all the good songs (self-written), and he was getting stuck with substandard material (self-written). No hints but his next single will be a cover of one of the songs in the chart.1 ( NEW ) I’M NOT IN LOVE - 10cc # 12 ( 1 ) MISTY - Ray Stevens # 13 ( 2 ) THE HUSTLE - Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony # 14 ( 3 ) BAD TIME - Grand Funk Railroad # 35 ( NEW ) BANG-A-BOOMERANG - ABBA # 56 ( 4 ) GET DOWN TONIGHT - KC & The Sunshine Band # 17 ( 7 ) LOVE WILL KEEP US TOGETHER - Captain and Tennille # 78 ( NEW ) TAKE ME IN YOUR ARMS (ROCK ME A LITTLE WHILE) - The Doobie Brothers # 89 ( 6 ) SKIING IN THE SNOW - Wigans Ovation # 110 ( 30 ) BOY BLUE - Electric Light Orchestra # 1011 ( 11 ) SISTER GOLDEN HAIR - America # 1112 ( 12 ) GRINGO IN MEXICO - Maria Muldaur # 1213 ( 5 ) JIGSAW GIRL - Clifford T.Ward # 514 ( 9 ) I WANNA DANCE WIT’ CHOO (DO DAT DANCE) - Disco Tex & The Sex-o-lettes featuring Sir Monti Rock III # 315 ( 8 ) A LITTLE LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING - Gilbert Becaud # 816 ( 10 ) THAT’S THE WAY OF THE WORLD - Earth, Wind & Fire # 1017 ( NEW ) HEY HEY HELEN - ABBA # 1718 ( 17 ) FOX ON THE RUN - The Sweet # 319 ( 15 ) EL BIMBO - Bimbo Jets # 220 ( 20 ) I DO, I DO, I DO, I DO, I DO - ABBA # 2021 ( 16 ) REACH OUT I’LL BE THERE - Gloria Gaynor # 122 ( 14 ) THE TIME WARP - Richard O’Brien, Patricia Quinn, Little Nell, Charles Gray & Cast # 423 ( 21 ) SUPERGIRL - Graham Bonney # 824 ( 19 ) TAKE YOUR MAMA FOR A RIDE - Lulu # 1925 ( 34 ) LET ME TRY AGAIN - Tammy Jones # 2526 ( 29 ) IT’S ONLY ME YOU’VE LEFT BEHIND - Cliff Richard # 2627 ( 23 ) JACKIE BLUE - The Ozark Mountain Daredevils # 428 ( 24 ) ONE DAY IN YOUR LIFE - Michael Jackson # 129 ( 22 ) SWEET TRANSVESTITE - Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon & Barry Bostwick # 2030 ( 13 ) WONDERFUL BABY - Don McLean # 1331 ( 26 ) I CAN DO IT - The Rubettes # 932 ( 32 ) #9 DREAM - John Lennon # 133 ( 28 ) WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO? - Diana Ross & The Supremes # 334 ( NEW ) SEND SOME LOVE - Lelly Boone # 3435 ( 33 ) LOVIN' YOU - Minnie Ripperton # 136 ( 18 ) PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM - Elton John Band # 137 ( 64 ) CRY SOFTLY - Andy Williams # 3738 ( 35 ) TUXEDO JUNCTION - Manhattan Transfer # 3539 ( 25 ) LOVE ME LOVE MY DOG - Peter Shelley # 1940 ( 36 ) WHY CAN’T WE BE FRIENDS - War # 3641 ( 38 ) LET ME BE THE ONE - The Shadows # 1842 ( 39 ) DING-A-DONG - Teach-In # 1743 ( 49 ) THE LAST FAREWELL - Roger Whittaker # 4344 ( 42 ) MY HEART’S SYMPHONY - Gary Lewis & The Playboys # 1245 ( NEW ) INTERMEZZO NUMBER 1 - ABBA # 4546 ( 63 ) LOOK AT YOU - George McRae # 4647 ( 66 ) LOST AND FOUND - Whiskey Mac # 4748 ( 61 ) LAND OF A THOUSAND DANCES - Mr Bloe # 4849 ( 65 ) YOU BABY - John Holt # 4950 ( 41 ) ONLY WOMEN BLEED - Alice Cooper # 4151 ( 59 ) I’LL BE HOLDING ON - Al Downing # 5152 ( 60 ) ROCK ME - ABBA # 5253 ( 44 ) YOUR KISS IS SWEET - Syreeta # 554 ( 53 ) OH BOY - Mud # 4555 ( 43 ) SWING YOUR DADDY - Jim Gilstrap # 456 ( 48 ) BE MY BABY - The Ronettes # 157 ( 57 ) JANUARY - Pilot # 158 ( 56 ) CHILD OF LOVE - Caston & Majors # 159 ( 50 ) PAPA OOM MOW MOW - The Sharonettes # 5060 ( 70 ) MIDNIGHT SKY PART 1 - The Isley Brothers # 6061 ( 46 ) YOU SEXY THING - Hot Chocolate # 762 ( 40 ) 99 MILES FROM L.A. - Albert Hammond # 4063 ( 45 ) HITCHING A RIDE IN THE MOONLIGHT - Middle Of The Road # 4564 ( 71 ) WE’LL FIND OUR DAY - Stephanie De Sykes # 6465 ( 27 ) BYE BYE BABY - Bay City Rollers # 966 ( 54 ) STAND BY ME - John Lennon # 467 ( 51 ) WHAT AM I GONNA DO WITH YOU - Barry White # 2568 ( NEW ) DON’T DO IT BABY - Mac & Katie Kissoon # 6869 ( 69 ) BROTHER CAN YOU SPARE A DIME? - Ronnie Lane # 6970 ( 47 ) LIFE IS A MINESTRONE - 10cc # 1971 ( NEW ) WOMBLING WHITE TIE AND TAILS - The Wombles # 7172 ( 37 ) DON’T BE CRUEL - Mike Berry # 3773 ( 76 ) DON’T BE CRUEL - Billy Swan # 7374 ( NEW ) TROPICAL LOVELAND - ABBA # 7475 ( 31 ) HONEY - Bobby Goldsboro # 376 ( 75 ) PALOMA BLANCA - George Baker Selection # 7577 ( 77 ) SWING LOW SWEET CHARIOT - Eric Clapton featuring Yvonne Elliman # 7778 ( 79 ) SANDY - The Hollies # 7879 ( NEW ) LOVE LIKE YOU AND ME - Gary Glitter # 7980 ( NEW ) MAN IN THE MIDDLE - ABBA # 80

July 4, 2025Jul 4 Author 3rd May 1975It's 2 weeks on top for 10cc's classic lush ballad, holding off the best non-single (in the UK) on the ABBA album at 2, with The Doobie Brothers fab cover at 3, as good as Long Train Coming and Listen To The Music I reckon. As per usual in the reissue mad record releases of 1972, some more oldies pop back - Jackie Wilson's Higher And Higher this time at 4, but not the radio side of the double A I Get The Sweetest Feeling as that already charted again in 1972, while Israelites is back at 15 for Desmond Dekker, though according to my single copy it's dated 1975 and doesn't feature The Aces, as it's a re-recording. Frankie Valli is back in the big league with his solo minor hit, Swearin' To God, I much prefer it to My Eyes Adored You, love the buzzing guitar bits and groove, in at 14 ahead of the reissued The Night in the UK, a big hit which I transferred back to the year of issue 1972 in these retro look-back-charts. Fox grab a follow-up to Only You Can, the equally catchy and quirky Imagine Me Imagine You for 2 top 20's in a row, as The Love Unlimited Orchestra keep a Barry White presence in the chart as his single drops out, the 4th charting track with gentle lush disco instrumental vibe still melodic at 46.The Stylistics are back with a jolly disco ditty in Sing Baby Sing, arranged by Van McCoy for his second on the list, while in at 2 it's the former lead singer of Thunderclap Newman and the voice of the epic Something In The Air, Speedy Keen. 6 years after I bought that single in Singapore he drops a rather nice track that I bought at the time, Someone To Love, which sadly flopped. A massive chart-topper on the other hand, was the novelty spin-off from It Ain't Half Mum sitcom set in wartime Burma - a performing troupe for the troops put on shows and sing songs of the period, largely the short portly Don Estelle as Lofty who had a great singing voice that belied his looks. Whispering Grass was an old Inkspots song appealing to mums and dads, but didn't really need the comedy bits. Slade are back - with a departure from their sound, on the funky sounds of Thanks For The Mem'ry ironically not as memorable as previous hits, but it makes 5 consecutive years of charting. Rhetta Young has a disco hit I never managed to record at the time, The Commodores add to their list with one I didn't know - Slippery When Wet. Young John Bon Jovi obviously took notes. It's good. Cher covers Fontella Bass's Rescue Me and doesn't ruin it, Todd Rundgren keeps his Retro chart entries coming with Real Man, for a 6th year, Barry Blue opts for a ballad that killed his hit-making run, and European Joey & Didi hit on the Continent with a cover of Do You Wanna Dance - but not the Barry Blue song, the older Cliff Richard hit song (in the UK), done best by The Mamas & The Papas I reckon.1   (   1   )   I’M NOT IN LOVE   -   10cc   #   12   (   5   )   BANG-A-BOOMERANG   -   ABBA   #   23   (   8   )   TAKE ME IN YOUR ARMS (ROCK ME A LITTLE WHILE)   -   The Doobie Look forward to seeing it. Maybe Sugar Me, Here I Go Again, Angel Eyes, Sunday Girl, All Kinds Of Everything as a guess 🙂
October 13, 2025Oct 13 Author 10th May 1975 It's straight in at 1 for a second Osmonds number one, following on from Crazy Horses in the Retro chart of late 1972. The Proud One is a Four Seasons cover that improves on the original, but is a track and song that has dropped from memory 50 years on, sadly. I love it, but it doesn't even feature in Four Seasons tribute concerts these days, nor Jersey Boys. Talking of Frankie Valli, Swearin' To God is up to 4, which rates amongst his top solo tracks in these Retro charts, yet has also largely been forgotten too. Jive Talkin' on the other hand, remains a classic radio staple and would feature in Saturday Night Fever in 1977, quite apart from being the comeback track that re-birthed The Bee Gees as a funk/disco major act and cultural touch-stone. New at 7 and their highest charter in 4 years. That chuggin' rhythm was nicked from driving over a road bridge in Miami. True story. Send In The Clowns topped my retro charts in 1973 for Glynis Johns, who lived to be 100 and who the song was written for - Judy Collins' version is vocally pure, but doesn't have the same pathos as Glynis' but it's still lovely and in 14 to give her a 4th top 20. Mike Post debuts on my chart with his wonderful theme to the fab Rockford Files PI show starring James Garner. Mike often came up with great TV themes, but this one was an actual US hit, and his first since 1968's production of Mason Williams' Classical Gas.Hot Chocolate do yet another genre change following a flop (Blue Night), and score with the funk-driven Disco Queen for a 5th year of hits and retro chart entries - but this time it kick-starts a run of hits that lasts through to 1979. Quo drop a live single, Roll Over Lay Down is pure rock boogie and new at 46, as US hit Fallin In Love debuts for Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds at 49. Showaddywaddy drop the 50's-styled glam rock hits and go full-on covers band - this template will last until the early 80's in a long run of chart hits, Three Steps To Heaven kicking it all off, as the Eddie Cochran cover is catchy and singalong and still quite well known in 1975.Joan Baez covers Dylan ahead of Judas Priest's later rock-out, but both versions of Diamonds And Rust are pretty decent. Roy C follows his 1972 1960's Shotgun Wedding revival with a new track that bombed and isn't on download, sadly, as it's pretty good - Love Me Till Tomorrow Comes. The First Class cover themselves (as The Ivy League), Funny How Love Can Be, BTO try for a Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet clone, but it's not as good, Hey You! The Manhattans return with a soul slowie, one year ahead of a UK hit with Hurt, Barry Manilow keeps the US hits coming on It's A Miracle, Gwen McRae follows hubbie George onto my chart, The Four Tops sneak in with a forgotten single, and Andy Williams drops a UK single that's not anywhere near as good as his US single inside the top 20. 1   (   NEW   )   THE PROUD ONE   -   The
