Posted March 20Mar 20 Today marks 35 years since the release of 'Vogue'. Inspired by the Harlem ballroom dance scene, this house track is a celebration of music, fashion, freedom and love. It dominated the charts worldwide, reaching #1 in 30 countries and selling over 6m to become the best selling single of 1990 - not bad for a song that was only intended to be a B-side! The song is highly remembered for its black-and-white, David Fincher-directed video, referencing many artists, actresses and photographers. At the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards, the video received 9 nominations and won in three categories: Best Direction, Editing and Cinematography.35 years on, what are your thoughts and memories of 'Vogue'?
March 20Mar 20 I recall its release at the time, there was nothing like it around and the song pretty much made Madonna my favourite artist (taking over from Kylie).Showing some love for the single mix which you don't hear much these days
March 21Mar 21 To think this was originally going to be the B side to keep it together! Song is one of her best! Video is one of her best! Every tour version has been incredible! It has been covered / sampled in live performances by everyone! I also live the artwork even though its not from the vogue period!!
March 23Mar 23 Vogue fights with Ray of Light as my fave ever Madonna song.My preferred version is the original single edit. I like the Immaculate Collection version, but it takes just a little too long to get into it.The video is probably her best. The VMA performance is incredible. Her mind to come up with that. And I can recreate the original choreography, so keep that in my back pocket 😂 Edited March 23Mar 23 by ChrisJK
March 25Mar 25 Author When I first bought 'Celebration' and discovered a lot of Madonna songs for the first time, I actually wasn't a fan of 'Vogue'. The whole thing just sounded a little strange and didn't feel like a song in the way I was used to. Of course, now I'm older and my music taste has expanded and matured, I can really appreciate the beauty of it and some of the things I didn't like about it are the very thing I do! I love the confidently long intro, Pettibone's layered house production, the escapist lyrics and the self-assured way Madonna delivers them - not forgetting the iconic Hollywood name-checking middle-8. The music video is up there with her very best. An absolute visual treat that perfectly captures the vibe of the song and the context of where voguing originated from. I love the song in all its forms - the single version is great, as is the 12-inch extended mix.
