Posted March 23Mar 23 I didn't see a thread for this so decided to start one. I went to see this yesterday and have to say I really quite enjoyed it. I wasn't hugely convinced in the beginning but as it got going I was swept along with it. Visually it was a feast for the eyes and the parts were all cast rather well. The storyline was slightly different but I didn't feel it detracted from the overall film, I feel the original storyline would have been a bit too weak for a live action. It's supposedly got bad reviews and a lot of people are not happy with the casting, but I thought it was decent. Not the best of the live actions but not the worse either, I'd watch it again.
March 25Mar 25 The Rachel Zegler hate is SO forced lmao. She's so talented. Her voice on 'Waiting On A Wish' is GORGEOUS (I wish the song was a tad shorter though!) but I've not seen this yet and I do plan to (especially as I don't have to pay). But I saw a Tik Tok video of her saying the "controversial" thing about Snow White not waiting for her Prince Charming etc... but then Lily James (Cinderella) and Emma Watson (Belle) both said very similar things for their Disney roles and received no backlash whatsoever... LMAO.Gal is the reason this is doing awfully and not just because of her apparently awful performance. But unfortunately people are spinning it on Rachel as the reason why this movie is doing terribly. It's annoying.
March 27Mar 27 Author It depends what you want from the role I guess. If you want a proper evil villain then you're not going to enjoy her, if you want a more campy villain you'll love her. I thought she was ok, but her singing wasn't great. Then again her song was easily the worse one.

It's annoying.I wouldn't say Gal is the only reason this is performing so badly, in fact any controversy around her seems to have totally slipped into the shadows. People have been majorly turned off supporting the film by the way Rachel has come across all throughout the build up to the film (+ since its release). Some of the criticism is completely valid.Anyway, Snow White has always been my favourite Disney film and while I don't think I'd be too disappointed if I did go and see this it's such a shame that the legacy of the film is probably going to take a bit of a hit given everything that's happened with this iteration. The original will never be beaten and the & the Huntsman films with Kristen Stewart were - to me - a perfect way of doing something different with the story for live-action while still remaining somewhat faithful to the original film. The sequel isn't even 10 years old yet ffs. Hopefully Disney learn from this.
March 28Mar 28 What has Rachel actually done though? Nobody can pinpoint exactly what it is she’s done wrong? She was right about what she said about the original story. She also made a comment about how “the Prince won’t be coming for Snow White” in this adaptation. A comment that both Lily James AND Emma Watson have said in their interviews about their Disney Princesses.

Like she has so much vitriol and disdain inside of her for the original source material. Why would you involve yourself in a project that's so far removed from the original (striking visual resemblance aside) that it may as well be a brand new film if all you're going to do is criticise it anyway? You can absolutely acknowledge that in present day the film needs to reflect how things have moved on, how women don't need to search for validation in finding a man, inclusivity, etc, without essentially saying any film with such a storyline is predatory.Lily James and Emma Watson likely conveyed what they wanted to say far more eloquently and didn't completely tank the momentum of their films.
March 28Mar 28 The backlash to Ziegler is quite unwarranted for me, what she said has been a bit cringey but harmless, and largely taken out of context, not to mention there's very clearly a racist undertone to a lot of the backlash just like Halle Bailey as well as the standard sexism that outspoken women in the spotlight face (and Palestine support because God forbid x).I support the backlash towards the film itself in every way though. These live action remakes are the most soulless, corporate cash-grabs in the movie industry. I'm not against an updated version of an 88 year old film that is just a tad dated despite it's groundbreaking nature (we had a wonderful version of Nosferatu recently that was over 100), but I don't even need to see this to know it will have the typical live action formula of a loose following of the beats of the original and what changes there are feel unnecessary and underdeveloped, and ultimately feeling just completely superfluous next to the groundbreaking original. This one additionally seems to have horrifying CGI, awful acting and another set of seven characters (?!). Nothing about them feels like they genuinely had a new vision or even respect the original at all, just how marketable they can make it to today's audiences.Disney have produced some of the best animated films of all time, I know in recent years (though they've often got dumped on Disney+), they still can release some solid flicks, yet they continue to just rehash the same things. Any remote failure that makes them reconsider pumping out more of these is a victory for cinema in my book.
