was thinking the other day abut Shakira's Oral Fixation vol. 2 album

the lead single was Don't Bother, a bit of a change of direction for her, more rock than Laundry Service

and did well in the UK but not so much in the US, so the album didn't open amazingly

so for single 2 they went with a brand new single, Hips don't lie, which was huge and a massive #1 everywhere

and then they re-released the album with Hips added and some more songs

Are there more examples of this? cos it's kinda radical

cannot think of any other example myself... anyone?

Does Jamelia's Thank You fit here, ish? Bout and Superstar were released with the album not even going Top 40. Thank You comes along, though it was on the original album and the re-release lands it a

Not strictly a second single but in both cases, they did get retrospectively added to the albums after:

  • Never Had A Dream Come True was added to S Club 7's "7" album (along with the single mix of Natural and their cover of Stevie Wonder's Lately for Motown Mania)

  • Similarly a few years later, they repacked Rachel Stevens' "Funky Dory" album when Some Girls became a hit (again, single mix of the title track and Breathe In Breathe Out were added, as was More More More - although annoyingly the single version was different from the album version just a couple of months later)

Actually just thought of another one as I was writing this: they reissued Boyzone's "Where We Belong" just three months after release to add No Matter What after that went to #1.

If I remember correctly Jessica Simpson’s album A Public Affair didn’t originally include second single I Belong To Me. I might be wrong though.

Rachel Stevens was my first thought with Funkydory. I remember getting the version of the album without Some Girls and being annoyed it wasn’t on there. lol

Not really the same but I always find it amusing Rihanna released her two singles from her debut and then stuck them on the end of her second album which came out less than a year after. lol

I’m retelling a story that KT Tunstall told onstage a few months back here, but apparently with her debut album, the first issue of the album only contained a live version of “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” from a Jools Holland performance. About a month after it was released they reissued the album with a studio version of the track.

I wasn’t really paying attention at the time, but that looks like an example of an album’s first single not being properly included with the first version of the album?!

Again, not quite what you’re looking for, but I’m sure Beyonce re-released her B Day album after just two singles (Deja Vu, Irreplaceable) with Beautiful Liar tacked on.

^hahaha thought the title was clear, I mean, albums where the release didn't do amazingly

so they course-corrected and the 2nd single was a brand new track not on the original album

and then they re-released the album with that new song added

what I'm not looking for is albums that after a while they released a deluxe with a new focus single

there's cazillions of albums like that

I think the Jessica Simpson example fits, at least judging by what wiki says.

the KT Tunstall is even more bizarre, I kinda remember the story, the album was re-released just 1 month after the original release and adding a studio version of Black Horse, but that was even before any single was released

Not entirely the same but Big Brovaz originally released the Nu Flow album after the single of the same name, when it peaked at #51. Second single OK was on this tracklist, but it got a rework for its single release and the album was then reissued with this remix on it (as well as a few additional tracks), when it improved its peak to #21. It got a second lowkey reissue, with the same artwork, to include third single Favourite Things, after which it eventually achieved its final peak of #6!

Don't think I have any better examples, the Shakira thing has always intrigued me, I got the original Oral Fixation Vol. 2 album at the time then was surprised when a brand new single came along so soon after, the reissue felt very lowkey and I didn't realise Hips Don't Lie got added to it for ages - I got a copy of the reissue cheaper years later (as I'd bought the Hips Don't Lie single so didn't immediately need it).

I could probably think of some more instances of "quiet" reissues though, where it's not really promoted as a deluxe or new edition of the album, and the artwork's the same, but an extra track features. Amy Studt's debut album added her All I Wanna Do cover with no real distinction otherwise with the original album. More recently, Shawn Mendes did this with Illuminate to add There's Nothin' Holding Me Back - a familiar tactic for the streaming era but there are rarely physicals produced to match this. Not what the thread asked for I know but a little tangent from me x

Side note: 'Don't Bother' is my favourite Shakria song! SO GOOD!

Does Jamelia's Thank You fit here, ish?

Bout and Superstar were released with the album not even going Top 40. Thank You comes along, though it was on the original album and the re-release lands it at #4. Subsequent singles See It In A Boy's Eyes and DJ were new to the re-release too.

Yes this one crossed my mind too but wasn’t too sure about the details of the re-issue.
