Posted July 8Jul 8 What are YOUR thoughts on this album cover and do you agree with the controversy surrounding it?If you've been living under a rock for the last month or so here is what makes the album cover so controversial:Sabrina received a lot of backlash from groups of people who deemed the cover misogynistic and many think it is just an example of appealing to the "male gaze". On the opposite side there are many people who think it's "sex-positive feminism" and is just in line with Sabrina and her charm/personality. A lot of people have likened this back to the glory days of Madonna and don't see why it's wrong. In response to the criticism, Sabrina released an alternate artwork version of the album where the artwork was "approved by God"...What are your thoughts? Do you like the alternate cover?
July 8Jul 8 I think the controversy is dumb, personally. There is no other era of pop where this would be controversial, but we're in an era where something cant just be mildly not good. So we have to create problems out of it. I appreciate what arguing about male gaze is trying to fix, but at a certain point it feels like it goes beyond its intended goal to become about insulting women for liking sex. And especially in a world where men sexualize everything no matter what you do, trying to police women to stop men from doing that feels backwards. And it gets worse when people argue that it glorifies DV. I'm sorry thats what is in your head, but imo this whole thing is an outrage in search of a problem, and thats the first thing that people could throw at it to try to find the problem.Personally, I dont like the cover. It looks like an outtake, it's not esthetically enjoyable, I wouldnt display it, and most importantly I dont think I'd ever become interested in hearing an album with this cover unless i was already a fan. I dont understand why anyone would see the 3 covers she has released and select that one to be the standard edition. But it's not problematic, it's just a bad cover
July 8Jul 8 As a female i can't stand the first cover, being called a dog is an insult men given to women, so calling herself a dog doesn't sit well with me. I like the alternative covers.
July 9Jul 9 Personally doesn't bother me too much because its essentially in line with what she been releasing recently and is very tongue in cheek
