Posted September 11Sep 11 7th September 2025It's straight in at 1 for The Turtles 1968 golden oldie Elenore, which was my fave record when I compiled my very first personal chart aged 10 - Mary Hopkin Those Were The Days was at 2, having been a fave for months, and The Beatles cover by Marmalade of Ob-La-Di was at 3. Other notable classics in my first chart were I Ain't Got No..I Got Life, Build Me Up Buttercup, Son Of A Preacher Man, Harper Valley PTA, This Old Heart Of Mine, Love Child and The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. So, Motown, film score, Country, reggae, soul, pop, folk covering all bases. Harmony pop was top though, and Mark Volman, co-singer and one of Flo & Eddie as The two Turtles were known in post-hits years, died this week. In tribute Elenore returns to the top for a 6th week nearly 57 years on, a record break between runs of course, while Happy Together enters for a third oldies run, and their other big UK hit She'd Rather Be With Me debuts at 48. The Turtles were instructed by their record label to write another hit like Happy Together, against their wishes, so they used every lyrical cliche, literally sang etcetara to take the piss, and still came out with a classic pop tune. That leaves Chappell Roan grabbing a second number 2 as The Subway climbs, and the highest new entry is Vance Joy at, out of nowhere with the fab Divine Feelings at 10 - Vance has only charted once for me, Riptide hit 19 in 2014 and then nothing for 11 years, so a new peak and finally a follow-up. Riptide has become one of the most beloved songs of the 2010's, so if everyone would stop playing that for a week and play the new one instead he might grab a hit. The Hives have had to wait 20 years, but they have their first top 20 track, 23 years since debuting with Hate To Say I Told You So. Persistance pays in my charts!Following news that Saint Etienne are calling it a day, I downloaded the new album and the wonderful animated video to their collab with Confidence Man brings Brand New Me in at 46 - it's done in the style of Hannah-Barbera cartoons of the 60's and early 70's, and recalls The Archies and Josie & The Pussycats in particular. Good Neighbours get a second new one on the chart, People Need People at 64, as I seem to have bought every track on the album ahead of release. Not quite, but they are so catchy!Down the lower end we have The Dead Dance from Lady Gaga, fresh from appearing in horror-comedy-drama Wednesday, with halloween not that far away, The Black Keys keeping their run of latter-day entries with Man On A Mission for 13 years of charting, sombr makes it 2 as Back To Friends enters while 12 to 12 drops from the top spot, Ladytron join the 2014-hit-and-then-nothing-for-11-years club with I Believe In You, Jalen Ngonda gets a third retro-sounding year of charting, Tame Impala extend their run to a decade, and Of Monsters And Men return after a 6-year gap with their 5th charting track since Little Talks topped my chart in 2012, around the time I joined Buzzjack.1 NEW 1 1 ELENORE - The Turtles 1700002 7 2 6 THE SUBWAY - Chappell Roan 2350003 3 1 13 TOKYO RAIN - Loaded Honey 11780004 1 1 7 12 TO 12 - sombr 4301505 2 1 8 WALK OF FAME - Miley Cyrus featuring Brittany Howard 8772006 4 4 8 FIVE MORE SECONDS - Seafret featuring KT Tunstall 3112507 5 1 13 OVER - Loaded Honey 9157508 10 8 6 SPIES - Robbie Williams 1382509 8 3 9 HARD TO BE HAPPY - Rob Thomas 44740010 NEW 10 1 DIVINE FEELINGS - Vance Joy 4200011 6 3 15 ZOMBIE LADY - Damiano David featuring Dove Cameron 57190012 11 10 8 JUPITER - almost monday featuring Jordana 24280013 25 13 8 BETTE DAVIS EYES - Kim Carnes 13035014 9 6 11 LET IT BE FOR LOVE - Armin van Buuren featuring JAI RYU 28960015 15 15 9 NO TIME TO TALK - Jonas Brothers 17195016 13 7 7 RAG DOLL - The Four Seasons 29000017 16 1 17 DON’T SPEAK - Loaded Honey 85290018 33 18 4 THE HIVES FOREVER FOREVER THE HIVES - The Hives 5460019 12 11 7 C’MON MARIANNE - The Four Seasons 18500020 29 20 4 G.O.A.T. September 11Sep 11 Nice mention of Mary Hopkin's classic hit. Very beautiful and talented lady. As I remember only one her song wasn't # 1 in my chart. Her later material (especially cute Christmas carol "Mary Had A Baby" and last single "If You Love Me") is very underrated. Why old Kim Carnes hit did a comeback in your chart ? September 12Sep 12 Hello John!Yass Chappell. I'm ecstatic to see the subway doing well for you. It's amazing still, to my ears.Beautiful Odyssey continuing its ascent is great to see. Steve Aoki has redone everytime we touch, with Cascada, you should check that out. There's a new video too.I'm absolutely loving Manchild so much just now and didn't expect to be as much either. It's sooooo good.I'm gonna guess that golden isn't gonna get too much higher for you. I think it has peaked for me, surprising even myself.Aaaah back to friends is great. I've added undressed to my playlist now as well... I'm really starting to enjoy sombr.Fab chart 😄

Her later material (especially cute Christmas carol "Mary Had A Baby" and last single "If You Love Me") is very underrated. Why old Kim Carnes hit did a comeback in your chart ?Thanks Alex, Mary had 3 huge number ones for me, but I liked everything she did, and she's still around doing the odd appearance and concert on socail media (yes I follow her 😄57 years on and I'm still star-struck - I met the lovely Chloe Annett of Red Dwarf TV show last week and I was thrilled when she offered a selfie. Still star-struck!)😂If You Love Me was a lovely version of a classic old song, it was more appealing to the older music fan at the time than the singles chart buyers (like me, who were buying ABBA!) but I liked it then and love it more now.Kim Carnes is back because someone did a cover version which popped into some charts, which then boosted the original to make the UK sales chart a few weeks back, so I took that as an excuse to bring it back!)
September 12Sep 12 Hi John!Nice to see "The Subway" as the runner-up, "Spies" reaching a new peak inside the top 10, the new peaks for "I'll Be Back", "In It With You", "Anxiety", "Self Control", "The First Time", "Save Me", "Golden", "What I Want", "Euro-Country" and "Dolce Vita", the big gains for "Bette Davis Eyes", "Beautiful Odyssey", "Fort Knox" and "I Can't Lose" and the debuts for "People Need People", "The Dead Dance", "Back To Friends" and "Happy Together".Great chart!Take care.

I must check out that Steve Aoki revamp of Cascada 👍Manchild still seems the best track on the album (at least what Ive heard so far) and I'm not fed up of it so far which is always a good sign long-term, I'm still playing it. Hope its more interesting than mine, painting walls with primer to hide water stains which didnt work, need oil-based primer it seems, doh! Oh, and our airport has announced a strike the day I'm off to Spain in 13 days, so thats up in the air (or not!), tch! Glad you know Elenore after all, my inner 10-year-old still adores it! 😄Glad you like Haircut, I love the Rev, and this one is more upbeat than usual (hence the radio 2 playlisting), and I'm sure lyrically relateable to many😇hope it peaks higher than mine, everything is peaking too low in a crowded chart - it feels more like a top 10 to me but couldnt quite get there. Brand New Me is fab, a delightful track with a fab video taking me back to my beloved Archies and Josie & The Pussycat TV show videos, very hanna-barbera! We need a mainstream pop show that will play new videos and plug stuff that hasnt been in the charts for 2 years! The album is quite good too. I hope they make a comeback sometime 🥺Golden is a song of two halves, the intro is great and the chorus which will always remind of a 6-year-old singing it and loving the movie, so I'm feeling kindly towards it, hah!
