Chartifacts - 22/01/07

(aria.com.au)

Beyonce has been at No.1 in Australia for the past 3 weeks with her

single "Irreplaceable", and this week it also spends its seventh week atop

the US Charts. Also the movie she co-stars in "Dreamgirls" opened in

Australia this week, but as of this week her three week run ends, and she is

replaced by the first New Zealand band since April 1996 to do so.

Evemore's second single from their album "Real Life" (No.11 this week),

has been steadily climbing the charts for the past 13 weeks, and this week

it takes the top of both the Download and National Singles chart. "Smack

That" by Akon is No.1 on the Physical Singles chart, but due to it being at

No.9 on the Downloads Chart, it climbs back to No.2 for a third

non-consecutive week.

With Evermore claiming the top of the Australian Charts this week (the

song is at No.23 on the New Zealand Charts), they become the eighth act from

across the Tasman to claim the top of our charts. The last New Zealanders to

reach No.1 were O.M.C. back in April 1996 when their single "How Bizarre"

stayed at the top for 5 weeks. The other NZ'ers are listed here.

Nov-64 - She's a Mod - Ray Columbus & The Invaders

Oct-78 - Are You Old Enough - Dragon

Nov-79 - Computer Games - Mi-Sex

Apr-80 - I Got You - Split Enz

Mar-81 - Counting the Beat - The Swingers

May-87 - Slice of Heaven - Dave Dobbyn

Apr-96 - How Bizarre - OMC

"Light Surrounding You" is the sixth song with the word 'Light' in its

title, the last being LeAnn Rimes' "Can't Fight the Moonlight", which was

first at No.1 this very week back in 2001. It's also the 918th No.1 single

since January 1940.

With Evermore reaching their peak, a few other songs have reached a new

peak this week. "Say it Right" by Nelly Furtado climbs to No.4, and gives

her three Top 4 singles from her current album "Loose" (which is the biggest

climbing album this week, more below). With "Promiscuous" (No.2, July 2006)

and "Maneater" (No.3, Nov 2006) she now has a No.2, No.3, and No.4 hit off

the album.

"Too Little Too Late" by JoJo climbs to No.10, giving her a second Top

10 single, her first being "Leave (Get Out)" which reached No.2 back in

August 2004. "Put Your Hands Up for Detroit" (No.11), "Welcome to the Black

Parade" (No.14) and "The Kill (Bury Me)" (No.20) all also hit new highest

peaks this week.

The highest of six new entries to the Top 50 comes in at No.13. "How to

Save a Life" is the title track from The Fray's album (No.27), and their

second Top 40 single, with their first track "Over My Head (Cable Car)"

still in the charts at No.29 this week. The new single has been in the US

Top 10 for the past 10 weeks, and is at No.7 this week.

The other Top 20 debut this week is also the second single from a

group's current album, although it is their 38th Top 40 single. "Window in

the Skies" by U2 is from their "U218 Singles" (No.4) album, and follows on

from their former No.1 single "The Saints are Coming" (Nov 2006). The video

for the single was shot at the Corner Hotel in Richmond here in Melbourne,

Australia.

Three more songs that are second singles off current albums are also

debuting in the charts. Evanescence follow-up "Call Me When You're Sober"

(No.5, Nov 2006) with "Lithium" at No.26, and this is the second single from

their current No.21 album "The Open Door". They are touring Australia in

February so this track should rise.

Also future tourists Jet and Teddy Geiger (not touring together though)

debut at No.49 and No.50 with "Rip it Up" and "These Walls" respectively,

both of which as I mentioned before are second singles off current albums.

Pink debuts at No.27 with "Nobody Knows", which is the fourth single off

this weeks No.3 album "I'm Not Dead". Previously she has had Top 5 hits with

"Stupid Girls" (No.4, March 2006) and "Who Knew" (No.2, July 2006) and the

current No.25 single "U + UR Hand" (No.5, October 2006).

The second ever Scottish band claim the No.1 album in Australia this

week. Snow Patrol take their album "Eyes Open" to the top, after taking 22

weeks to do so. With the single "Chasing Cars" not being available as a

single, and it being No.1 on the download charts for the past 8 weeks, the

only way non-download customers could get the song was to buy the album,

which achieved triple-platinum in early January, and it now gives them the

first new No.1 album of 2007.

Simple Minds are the only other Scottish group to hit No.1, having done

so with the Greatest Hits package "Glittering Prize 1982-1992" in December

1992. "Eyes Open" is the 542nd No.1 album in Australia since January 1965,

and it becomes the second album to hit No.1 with the word 'Eyes' in its

title, the other being Delta Goodrem's "Innocent Eyes" back in 2003. As for

the word 'Open', it's the third such album with that word in its title, the

last one being only in October 2006 when Evanescence spent two weeks at the

top with their "The Open Door" album. Previously the only other album with

'Open' in its title was 2000's "Music from the Opening Ceremony Games of the

27th Olympiad".

Moving into the Top 10 is the No.1 Australian film "Happy Feet"

Soundtrack at No.6, whilst another film that open this week "Dreamgirls"

debuts with its Soundtrack at No.31 to become this week's highest new entry

to the albums chart.

Also moving back into the Top 10 this week are My Chemical Romance

(No.9) and The Killers (No.10) with their previous album "Hot Fuss"

re-entering the Top 50 at No.38 this week.

As I alluded to earlier, Nelly Furtado had the biggest climbing album

this week, as her "Loose" album jumps from 31 to No.20, due in part to her

scoring her third Top 5 single. Also moving up the charts due to some

publicity is Bindi Irwin, who's "Bindi Kidfitness" album hits a new highest

peak of No.15 this week. Also making new peaks are The Fray (No.27), 30

Second to Mars (No.38) and Sneaky Sound System (No.17).
