Biography

Born in 1993, London-based songwriter and producer Frederick John Philip Gibson treats his electro- and rave-inspired songs as diary entries. But the artist, who performs under the name Fred again.., doesn’t limit the subject matter to himself. On albums like 2021’s Actual Life (April 14 - December 17 2020) and Actual Life 2 (February 2 - October 15 2021), Fred invited his friends into the studio to record their personal stories and then sprinkled them throughout the album. The obvious exception was an epic Kodak Black sample on “Kahan (Last Year).” The songwriter has also worked with stars such as Eminem and Ed Sheeran; in 2023, he teamed up with ambient godfather Brian Eno to create the contemplative, uplifting Secret Life, a partnership that Eno called “a two-way relationship.” Fred’s longest collaboration is with his brothers, whom he shares his tracks with before they’re released. “It’s such a blessing to work with both of my brothers,” Fred explained in an interview with Apple Music. “I’ll spend hours and hours working on a tune, and they’ll hear it how I will, but without all the baggage. They bring a fresh ear.” On stage, he’s become closely associated with two beloved brothers from different mothers: Skrillex and Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden. Following a surprise booking at Coachella 2023, the three pals became an unlikely superstar DJ trio. Their success just proves a tenet key to Fred’s practice: Music is best among friends. - Apple Music

Biography

A style-shifting pop star who got her start as a teen dance prodigy, Tate McRae is every bit a dynamic multi-hyphenate. Born in 2003 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, she worked her way up to the finals on So You Think You Can Dance at age 13, following other impressive milestones as a live performer. McRae answered her overnight TV success by uploading a series of singles that showcased the preternatural depth of her singing and songwriting. Signed to a major label when she was 16, she struck gold globally with 2020’s “you broke me first,” adding ominous trap beats to an intimate lament. But rather than be pigeonholed by weepy ballads, McRae quickly showcased her full range with convincing forays into dreamy alt-rock and purring R&B on 2022’s i used to think i could fly. Coming off even more emboldened on 2023’s THINK LATER, she greets her entry into her twenties with a well-earned sense of confidence on tracks like the chirping kiss-off “exes.” Echoing her penchant for inhabiting a deep bench of musical styles without breaking her stride, she seems just as much at home in the role of a nonchalant heartbreaker as in the role of the one at home nursing a broken heart. - Apple Music

Biography

During her championship season on the first American Idol in 2002, Kelly Clarkson wowed judges and viewers in ways that countless contestants have emulated since but few ever repeated. But what’s most amazing about the Texan sweetheart’s Cinderella story is not how she earned that first burst of reality-TV glory but how she extended her 15 minutes to weather setbacks and forge a career as one of music’s best-loved performers. Clearly Clarkson’s power and versatility as a vocalist were equaled by her determination and resilience, qualities she displayed when she shifted away from pop ballads like her Idol signature song “A Moment Like This” toward spunkier declarations of autonomy like 2004’s “Since U Been Gone” and 2011’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” Those hits proved Clarkson was just as happy rocking out as she was demonstrating her fervent love for pop, country, and R&B. They also showed how even major-league song doctors like Max Martin had to conform to Clarkson’s style and sensibility, not the other way around. Her eighth consecutive album to debut in the top three spots on the Billboard album charts, 2017’s Meaning of Life was her most confident and well-rounded statement to date. The single “Heat,” an irresistible gospel-house hit fueled by Clarkson’s unbeatable spirit and limitless energy, proved she could cut it as a club diva, too. - Apple Music

Biography

Singer Brenda Lee was one of the first country artists to cross over to pop audiences, and she was the highest-charting female artist of the 1960s. At nine years old, Lee joined the cast of the TV show Ozark Jubilee after impressing host Red Foley with her rendition of “Jambalaya.” Her first hit, “One Step At A Time,” released when she was 12, peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Country chart and No. 43 on the Hot 100. Lee’s most famous single, 1958’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” initially only sold 5,000 copies, but by 1978 it had sold 5 million and continues to be one of the most-played holiday songs. From 1958 to 1962, she had 10 consecutive Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100—a record for a female solo artist that she held for more than 20 years. The 1960 hit “I’m Sorry” earned Lee her first of four Grammy nominations, and and she was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1997 and the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002, making her the first woman to earn both distinctions. John Lennon once referred to Brenda Lee as the greatest rock ’n’ roll voice of all time. - Apple Music

Edited by 777666jason

this is the only one of that category of 'old american christmas songs that do well due to americanised playlists' that i enjoy, jingle bell rock, its the most wonderful etc i am not a fan of at all

Ugh! I've never liked this one! Overrated

'Underneath The Tree' looks like the only Christmas song in the Top 40 to be significantly higher than this time last year.

Biography

The country world feigned surprise when, after three albums of Music Row-indebted songcraft, Taylor Swift formally embraced pop on 2012’s Red. But no one should have been shocked: Any 14-year-old capable of persuading her parents to move from suburban Pennsylvania to Nashville for her career clearly has ambition to burn. And the thrill of following Swift’s rise has been watching her execute it flawlessly, largely because her melodic intelligence is equal to that ambition. Her early, youthful love songs heralded 2010's newly self-possessed Speak Now—which showed off her scathing wit—and evolved into knowing, ironclad pop fare that held its own against boisterous Max Martin production on 1989, her fifth album, titled after her birth year. Throughout, her songwriting has blurred the lines between the public and private, burying enough real-life clues (about, say, scarves and Starbucks) to make clear that only Swift can own her narrative, thank you very much, while still retaining a lyrical elegance. Though 2017’s reputation might have been perceived as a gorgeously constructed piece of dramatic theater—its attendant heroes and villains all real-life characters from Swift's public feuds—all that spectacle proved an attention-grabbing cover for her most romantic album yet. She turned up the romance even more on 2019’s Lover, but it was 2020’s folklore and its companion, evermore—ruminative, relatively lo-fi albums written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic—that earned her the Apple Music Award for Songwriter of the Year. She followed those up in 2022 with Midnights, which she wrote and produced with Jack Antonoff, and described as "the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life." In 2023, Swift undertook one of the most ambitious road shows of all time: the multi-year Eras Tour, which saw her presenting new and classic material across more than 100 locales worldwide. It was just one of many reasons she was named Apple Music's Artist of the Year for 2023. Swift returned to the soft, comfortable, bed-like sonics of Midnights for her 11th album, 2024’s THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. A study in extremes and heightened emotions, the record—which features guest turns from Post Malone and Florence + the Machine—is her most specific, candid, and unsparing work to date. - Apple Music
