Posted January 24, 200718 yr HUNDREDS of screaming pupils were given the surprise of their lives when two pop stars rocked their Nuneaton school. Excited youngsters at Etone Community School couldn't believe their eyes when Jamelia and Paolo Nutini dropped by for a live show on Radio 1. And it was all down to pupil Chelsea Rowe who was among thousands of school children who entered a competition asking to be a "star pupil" for the day. The 14-year-old was stunned when Radio 1 chose her school to be the focus of a live show. But she and her classmates were really knocked for six when the two big pop acts walked into the school hall to give a special performance - broadcast to the whole nation. TEENAGER Chelsea Rowe walked to school in Nuneaton thinking it was going to be just like any other day. She sat down for registration at Etone Community School, in Leicester Road, and her teacher said: "We have got a new girl in our class. Has anyone seen her?" Seconds later, Radio 1 disc-jockey Edith Bowman walked in to spring arguably the biggest surprise in the school's history. Gobsmacked Chelsea, aged 14, couldn't believe her eyes. She was one of 5,000 schoolkids nationwide who had entered a competition months ago asking to be a 'star pupil' for the day and she'd told Radio 1 about her superb school in Nuneaton. Not only was Edith Bowman preparing to broadcast her show live from Chelsea's school, but pop stars Jamelia and Paolo Nutini would be appearing live on stage in the school's main hall. Chelsea, who lives in St Nicolas Park Drive, Nuneaton, said: "This is just amazing. I can't believe it. "All my mates keep coming up to me and saying 'Chels, you're a legend - I love you, I love you, I love you'." She said she woke up at 7.15am yesterday and tuned into Radio 1, hoping to find out if she had won the competition. "They didn't give any information out, so I had my banana for breakfast and went off to school," she said. "I was talking to my friend outside school and said I didn't think it would be us. "Then we went into registration and 'Miss' asked us if any of us had seen the new girl yet. Then Edith Bowman walked in. It was unreal. "I sent a text message to my mum just after 9am saying 'Oh my God, oh my God, Radio 1 are at my school!' It has just been an amazing day." She even went on stage and performed as a backing singer for Jamelia. Chelsea said: "I'm a big, big fan of Jamelia. "She said to me 'Thanks for inviting me - I have really enjoyed it.' This has been a great day." Peter Kingham, head teacher at the 750-pupil school, said it had been difficult keeping the secret of Radio 1's visit. He said: "Chelsea came and asked permission to put her name forward for this ages ago. "We have known for a few weeks that this was taking place but had to keep it a secret. One of Chelsea's classmates, 14-year-old Catherine Holmes, of Gadsby Street, Attleborough, Nuneaton, went into the school canteen to order bangers, mash and peas - and found herself being served by Jamelia. For more pictures of the day, see iccoventry's picture gallery tomorrow.... "Wow," she said. "I can't believe that. "I think what Chelsea has done is wonderful for the school." Only Year 10 and Year 11 pupils were allowed to see the performance by Jamelia in the main hall - with Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils getting to see the Paolo Nutini performance. Jamelia sang her latest single Something About You before recruiting four backing singers - Chelsea, her classmates Paris Palmer and Cat Holmes, and teacher Sarah Loughrey - for a special Etone performance of her hit single, Superstar. Jamelia also answered questions from students. One asked her how she balanced her life as a mum and a pop star. She replied: "I have lots of help." Another asked what she thought of Etone School. She replied: "Your school is so much better than my school, much better." So Jealous
