Formed in 1969 Phil Lynott was the focal point of the band. They first hit the top 10 in 1973 with “Whiskey in the jarâ€. Other hits included The boys are back in town, Don’t believe a word, Dancing in the moonlight and Waiting for an alibi. The band were constantly replacing guitarists, from Eric Bell,to Gary Moore,Brian Robertson,Gary Moore again, Midge Ure then Snowy White.

Lynott died in 1986 from a heroin overdose. But some of their songs are still familiar today.

Any fans of Thin Lizzy?

great band with a unique sound. they are one rock band who havnt followed the purple/sabbath sound that so many in their wake did.

'dont believe a word' , 'jailbreak' are 2 superb pop/rock tracks.

in rock history i think thin lizzy are overlooked.

Jailbreak, Wild one, Waiting For An Alibi, Don't Believe a word and Whiskey in the jar are all faves of mine.

My favourite Phil Lynott/Thin Lizzy track failed to chart as a single 1982 and does not appear on their Greatest Hits, but I love the self narrative of the lyrics of this song that sadly came true less than half a decade later.

Phil Lynott - Old Town (1982)

thin lizzy had some good songs but they still are stuck in obscurity to many who dont know much classic rock. i guess everyone knows the boys are back in town though. people probably think they are a one hit wonder.

did they get much exposure in the states?..

The best thing Phil Lynott ever did was 'Yellow Pearl' - the early 80s Top of the Pops theme - synthtastic!
