If Ian Curtis hadn’t died in 1980,and Joy Division had continued, would they have still sounded like New Order, or would they have been better musically? Everyone know’s Joy Divisions’ “Love will tear us apart†and New Order’s “ Blue Mondayâ€, but I wonder if Joy Division could have been even bigger than New Order were.

oh i think joy division would have been an all time great, however im not so sure that they would have been so commercially successful as new order , being more avante gard.

I totally agree that Joy Division had a huge amount of potential. Ian Curtis had a fantastic slightly gothic voice.

Joy Division - Atmosphere

However, how many acts in Rock History have started with two great albums and then run out of steam?

Joy Division, because they were utterly perfect... Two absolutely amazing, classic albums which are so unbelievably influential on the modern scene... NO may have achieved commercial success, but later, weaker material has tarnished their legacy somewhat... Joy Division can never be tarnished because they never compromised or sold out or grew old and tired artistically.... As Neil Young once said "Better to burn out than fade away.."

They had to change their name as they all agreed if something would happen to a member they wouldn't carry on as Joy Division. But they could have carried on in the same manner musically.

I don't think they could have done much to better what had already been made to add to their name, as Ian Curtis was a genius.

Well, they did carry on in the same vein. 'Ceremony', the first single, was penned with Ian and 'Movement' is a very JD sounding album, complete with Martin Hannett (as important as anyone to the Joy Division sound) production.

If Ian and Martin had still been around I don't think we'd have had 'Blue Monday', the work with Arthur Baker, the Ibiza-sound of 'Technique' etc. New Order found themselves a brand new sound which still harked back to what Joy Division were doing.

But, overall, Joy Division are my favourites easily. They had a 100% faultless record in singles with all three absolute classics and the albums, which were fully separate affairs, are both virtually untoppable.

Yes, if they'd carried on then they may have gone stale...but we'll never know.

apart from that track i actually like this a lot:

Soundhog - I know him. Nice chap, and that is one of the better mixes flying around the music channels.

Controversial choice... but it's easily New Order for me... but only up to 1993.

I like Joy Division, but they're a certain mood music band for me... and I'm rarely feeling that black and low to isten to either of the albums, as good as they are.

I think the finest work New Order did was Technique, which is one of the most influential, goundbreaking and positively brilliant albums ever made. Of course, New Order are, these days, about as creative as a fishcake... they should've knocked it all on the head after Republic.

Before Republic to be fair.

Funny you mention you have to be down to listen to Joy Division. I must admit I find 'Closer' a difficult album, but 'Unknown Pleasures' I can stick on at any time and actually take quite a buzz from it...well, some of it anyway!

I definitley think that they were much better as Joy Division as they made some real classics back then, I don't really pay much attention to New Order as they haven't recorded anything that remotely interests me lately in all honesty.

yeah the hits play it a lot. good mash

I liked Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division, but overall New Order had better songs.
