Only a few notes, but here are the first ten in ISO order. Next lot soon!

Andorra – Sense Tu – Jennifer

This song is actually quite good, after a few listens this song gets really catchy. It has a few points from Spain and France almost guaranteed, but being on quite near the start of the semi-final doesn’t give it the best chance of qualifying. I reckon it will just miss out.

Albania – Zjarr E Ftohte – Luiz Ejlli

This almost sounds Egyptian and those sorts of songs are usually good. Not this, an instantly forgettable Albanian entry, just like last year’s. Albania have gone downhill since their good debut performance in 2004, and I don’t see them qualifying for the final this year.

Armenia – Without Your Love – Andre

Quite an Asian sounding song from Armenia this year; but then again, they are in Asia aren’t they?! A bit unlucky, getting drawn first as I reckon this song is a borderline qualifying song. Because of that, I think it will narrowly miss out.

Bosnia-Herzegovina – Lejla – Hari Mata Hari

A smooth, gentle ballad that echoes Serbia & Montenegro’s entry of 2004 is the entry from Bosnia-Herzegovina this year. Priced a healthy 12-1 at the moment, this song is a great bet. This is my tip for the win of the semi-final, and a huge possibility for the title on May 20th.

Belgium – Je T’adore – Kate Ryan

A wonderful song from Belgium this year, proving there is still a lot going for pop! Although it is one of the big faves for this year, I don’t see it winning. It should qualify comfortably from the semi-final, but then we thought that about Selma last year. If it does qualify though, as it rightly should I see it finishing around 7th or 8th.

Bulgaria – Let Me Cry – Mariana Popova

A poor song yet again from Bulgaria this year, and a poor draw in the running order the song never really gets going. Don’t expect to see it in the final on May 20th.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/bel.jpg

Belarus – Mum – Polina Smolova

Another poor song, with a poor draw (I’m sure this draw is more-or-less alphabetical?!) and I don’t see it qualifying. Nuff said…

Switzerland – If We All Give A Little – Six4One

A strange song from Switzerland this year, which sounds like it’s come straight from the West-End or has been written to help poverty-stricken countries. A real cheese fest, and a poor position in the running order of the final shouldn’t see it get too high, but there is always the surprise package – hence Latvia last year.

Cyprus – Why Angels Cry – Annette Artani

A strange song from Cyprus this year, sounds to me like a mix of a few songs and it never really takes off, I don’t see this qualifying.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/de.gif

Germany – No No Never – Texas Lightning

The “Marmite†song of the contest – you either love it or hate it. I have to say I can’t stand this. A sort of hippyish-country like folk song might just do it for Germany this year, however I can’t see it winning. It will go far though.

Nice roundup David-I almost completely agree with these comments. As much as I would love to see Belgium in the top 3, Xandee really flopped for that country with a dance track in 2004...

I love Germany and I hope it does well!!!

That was such a good song

Nice David, What order are they in?

At first I though alphabetic then I got to Switzerland

Anyway, great write up, looking forward to more!

Here are the next nine, and e-motion they are in ISO code order, the order used for the voting in 2004 ;) and Switzerland's is CH so they appear higher!

Denmark – Twist Of Love – Simsel Ben Semmane

Not a bad song from Denmark this year. Very catchy, I found myself singing along to after just one listen but after more than that it does get rather boring. However for most, the first time they hear this will be in the final so it could just do well. I’m saying mid-tableish though.

Estonia – Through My Window – Sandra

One of the favourites for the title of the semi-final and a very good draw position (21/23) should see this song comfortably through. I personally love this song, but I don’t see it quite winning. Should score highly from the Baltic countries and Scandinavia but I don’t see a great deal of other countries giving it douze pwans.

Spain – Bloody Mary – Las Ketchup

It’s the return of Las Ketchup for Spain this year, after their European hit in 2002, “Aserejeâ€Â. “Bloody Mary†isn’t a patch on that though, but it is still catchy enough. Spain may score, just like t.A.T.u. did in 2003 as many people know who they are, even if they send a pretty naff song, but I don’t see it troubling the top five.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/fi.gif

Finland – Hard Rock Hallelujah – Lordi

Certainly a “Hard Rock†song from Finland this year, and it can hopefully give them better luck than recent years. They’ve only ever finished top ten once but I think this stands an outside chance, it may just creep up the table, should it qualify.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/fr.gif

France – Il Etait Temps – Virginie

Another poor French entry this year, but of course they are directly through to the grand final. Of the few times I’ve tried doing the 2006 voting simulator at the Eurovision Record Book, this always comes near the bottom. When will France send a great song like 2001’s and 2002’s? Pretty soon please…

United Kingdom – Teenage Life – Daz Sampson

Let’s be totally honest here, if this song was entering for Latvia or Estonia it would probably finish a mile ahead of everyone else, as it’s entering for us, we may have to settle for a lower score. However, if Daz and the girls can put in a good performance it will hopefully take the roof off the stadium and really show em how it’s done! I can see us going far with this, if the performance is good enough and there is nothing else like it in the contest.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/gr.gif

Greece – Everything – Anna Vissi

I really don’t see what is so special about this song; it’s just any other ballad-type tune. At 2-1 faves with the bookies, you would think they have it wrapped up. Ok, so it’s not a bad song by any means, and as Greece are the hosts then they do stand a very good chance. I can think of other songs I would rather see win though.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/kr.gif

Croatia – Moja Stikla – Severina

Another good song from Croatia this year, a sort of folk type song but imo much better than Germany’s entry. This should score very highly from the Balkan countries and get average sort of scores from the rest of Europe. This could also be a surprise package and do well, I am not totally convinced, although I do love the song.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ir.gif

Ireland – Every Song Is A Cry For Love – Brian Kennedy

There was a time when Ireland could do no wrong, but since Dawn in 1998, their entries have been lacklustre. This year’s is unfortunately no different. Even with a “professional†singer, is this all they could come up with in the Emerald Isles? A boring ballad that isn’t going to qualify…

I agree again David-good work-I hope UK do well...political votings growing a bit tiring now...

Israel – Ze Hazman – Eddie Butler

A slow but merry little song from Israel this year, which reminds me of Denmark’s entry last year and that did very well. This is nowhere near as good as last year’s Israeli entry, and being one of the weaker finalists I think it will finish fairly towards the bottom of the pile.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/is.gif

Iceland – Congratulations – Silvia Night

This is a real dark horse. It has been quietly creeping up various polls and is on last in the semi-final, and if it qualifies eight of the ten vacant slots are in the second half. A typical Eurovision song, and rather catchy too. This could go far.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/li.gif

Lithuania – We Are The Winners – LT United

I really detest this song, and I don’t see it finishing particularly highly either. It is just, well terrible tbh. It might get a few votes from the Baltics, but other than that I can’t see it qualifying for the final.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/la.gif

Latvia – I Hear Your Heart – Cosmos

A bit of a bland song for Latvia this year, but luckily for them they are already through to the final. It sounds a little bit like a poor reworking of “Only Youâ€Â, that Christmas song. A huge outsider, I don’t see it doing very well.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/mo.gif

Monoco – La Coco Dance – Severine Ferrer

This is another grower, just like Andorra’s entry. A fun song that is a bit like a nursery rhyme tbh, but it might just get through the semis. If it does, who know what will happen in the final?

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/fyr.gif

FYR Macedonia – Ninanajna – Elena Risteska

This is Macedonia’s best entry so far by a mile. Elena has an amazing voice which suits this Ethnic sort of entry. Each year, they give us a poor song yet so far have a 100% record of qualifying to the final. As the last two year’s songs have gone through, this will go through without a doubt. Not one of the faves for the title though imo.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ma.gif

Malta – I Do – Fabrizio Faniello

Fabrizio sung for Malta in 2001 and his song was quite similar to this. I don’t see this song going too far in the final though, it is quite bland tbh, and I don’t really see where its big votes are going to come from.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/nl.gif

Netherlands – Amambanda – Treble

I personally think that if the Netherlands don’t qualify, they are gonna pull out next year. They threatened it last year after “My Impossible Dream†failed to qualify. Anyway, onto this year’s entry and this isn’t a bad song at all, it could qualify and do quite well. Very catchy too.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/no.gif

Norway – Alvedansen – Christine Guldbrandsen

This is a really good song, yet it passed me by the first few times of listening to it. It has been doing fairly well in most polls and it’s about time a woman singing a slow ballad won. One hasn’t won since Ireland’s triumph, in Norway, with “The Voiceâ€Â. This should do well, but a poor starting position (5th) could prevent it from getting as many points as it could.

I agree with Norway and Iceland-I sincerely hope that the bookies are wrong and a western european country win this year. Silvia Night might be a comedy song but I like it-I keep singing it at work!!!

Poland – Follow My Heart – Ich Troje

Ich Troje return just three years after their top ten finish in Riga and this year’s song a much better song than their 2003 entry. I hope this qualifies for the final, but I wouldn’t put money on it, it will probably be the unlucky one that finishes 11th. All the same, a good song.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/pr.gif

Portugal – Coisas De Nadat – Non-Stop

As per usual, Portugal send another poor song to the Eurovision. This year they are trying to convince us they are really a Swedish tribute band singing a poor version of “Waterlooâ€Â.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ro.gif

Romania – Tornero – Mihai Traistariu

One of the big faves that has already qualified for the final this year is this. This is a good dance tune that should go down big in the hall. I like it and Romania have had a good last few years. This really could go all the way.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ru.gif

Russia – Never Let You Go – Dima Bilan

This is a very good song. Dima has a good voice and he has quite a good draw in the semis. The song is quite upbeat and the title “Never Let You Go†has been used a good few times in Eurovision! It should do well, particularly with neighbourly voting. Last year, all Russia’s votes came from its neighbours and they got over 50 points.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/se.gif

Sweden – Invincible – Carola

This song is quite simply amazing. This is where my favourite song lurks, and it has a good draw for the semis. I am almost 100% this will qualify for the final and it should finish well up there. A good bet for a win? I think it will just miss out tbh, but this is the best song in the contest.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/sl.gif

Slovenia – Mr Nobody – Anzej Dean

Quite an unlucky draw for the Slovenes, as this is another one of those borderline qualification songs. Being on 4th doesn’t give them the best of chances. This is a typical Eurovision song and I like it. Hopefully it can qualify.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/tr.gif

Turkey – Superstar – Sibel Tuzun

This song confuses me every time. One minute I think it can go all the way, the next I see it flopping. I honestly can’t call this one, we are gonna have to wait till May 20th to see just how this does imo. More about the song though, her voice is quite similar to Sertab’s, who won for Turkey in 2003 and the song is quite different to anything else in the competition.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ukr.gif

Ukraine – Show Me Your Love – Tina Karol

This song really reminds me of last year’s winner, “My Number Oneâ€Â. From the start of the song to the beats throughout and the tempo Tina is singing in. However in true tradition, the curse of last year’s hosts will get Ukraine and they won’t qualify. Unlucky guys!

One more who I forgot to do!

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/mol.gif

Moldova – Loca – Arsenium & Natalia Gordienko

Quite a Spanish sounding song from the Moldavians this year, but not in a good way unfortunately. This tuneless and boring song could send most people to sleep and the fact that it’s on right near the start makes it a strong candidate for nil pwans, apart from maybe a few points from Romania.

Totally agree with your Turkey comment. Her voice is very like Sertab's - dire
i think UK will finish in the top 10! hopefully desevres top 3

Finland has actually made it into top ten several times, even thou never higher than 6th...

Aah yes so they have my mistake! But they must have chosen some really poor songs, their highest score is only 93 and since 1990 they haven't finished above 15th and haven't had more than 24 points (2002)! :o

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/pr.gif

Portugal – Coisas De Nadat – Non-Stop

As per usual, Portugal send another poor song to the Eurovision. This year they are trying to convince us they are really a Swedish tribute band singing a poor version of “Waterlooâ€Â.

As much as I hate Non Stop and the Portuguese music, I have to say this is quite a strong song compared to all the previous years! Plus, they are NOT singing a poor version of Waterloo, actually they have NOTHING to do with ABBA, nor does this song have anything to do with Waterloo  Non Stop are actually mentioned as the Portuguese 'Girls Aloud' .. so yeah

Awww sorry Pipa  , just my first impression I've only heard the song once I'll give it another listen see if I like it more.

  • Author
Ok I've heard it again and the Waterloo bit I was referring to was the bit "gonna make you dance" sounds like when Abba sing "Waterloo, I was..." and tbh I think the bookies are slightly unfair now, putting it as the least fave many of the songs are worse. Hope it does well for ya anyway Pipa! ^_^
