Tonight has been TedStock, a special benefit gig for long lost forgotton 'alternative alternative' comedian Ted Chippington's recordings to be released on a (proper kosher) CD.

Writer Ed Caesar in the Independent last Thursday went to find this long lost comedian (and no doubt was involved in the BBC 2 Culture show profile as well, seeing as it was almost the same stuff that was on TV!!!) who is supposed to be one of the most influential comedians in the UK but nobody has heard of him!!!!

According to people like Stewart Lee  he is supposed to be like England's answer to Andy Kaufman for loads of comedians like him, Richard Herring, Simon Amstell and Phill Jupitus but unknown to everyone else in the world. so has anybody heard of him (well before last week in the press obv)

the paper says he is supposed to have had a number 42 hit in the singles chart with a cover of 'She Loves You' however it doesnt appear in the book. so on what chart was this. was it an indie chart? does anybody know?

also if you know him you might know these:

also mentioned is Rocking With Rita which is down in the book as the Vinderloo Summer Special

and (wiki says) featured Fuzzbox tackling such classics as "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" on the b-side, a full four years before Timmy Mallet and Bombalurina.

We've Got a Fuzzbox and We're Gonna Use It

were an all-girl Birmingham, England based, punk-pop quartet that was loud, gaudy, and mildly controversial. (however wiki doesnt say why they were controversial???)

The Nightingales:

This band, before splitting up, played more sessions on John Peel's Radio 1 show than any other band excluding The Fall.

also artrocker mentioned Poppy and the Jezebels as being their protoges.

 and finally a contempory of Ted Chippington who also was a comedian who used to support bands like the fall.

I think a candidate for next years CBB dont you think

Heard of Fuzzbox, loved them

Hailed from Birmingham, England, started out as a punk band then turned into pop and had hits with 'International Rescue', 'Pink Sunshine' and 'Self'.

so none of the other acts known to you (well apart from Stewart Lee and Phill Jupitus obv)?

I remember Ted well...and I own the Rocking with Rita single...it's ace.

Fuzzbox were great, too... Rules and Regulations was the first I remember by them...and even when they morphed into a glam girlie band they were fab.... Self was a corking single (some great remixes, too)...as was International Rescue, plus their inspired cover of the Yoko Ono masterpiece 'Walking On Thin Ice'.

Wonder why they just disappeared after their couple of hits? I know the foxy lead singer is in a band called Vix, now... http://www.vix.uk.com/EN/index2.php
