Police Not Linking, But 3rd Attack In 3 Days To Apparently Target Driving Regulators

(CBS/AP) A parcel bomb exploded and injured a woman at a British driver and vehicle licensing agency on Wednesday, South Wales police said.

It was the third parcel bomb to injure office workers in as many days in Britain.

In a surprise announcement, British police said that a total of seven devices had been discovered in the past three weeks. No further information on the previously unreported devices was immediatly released.

Wednesday's incident occurred at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority in Swansea. The woman's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

The DVLA processes drivers' licenses and vehicle registrations.

On Monday, a woman was injured by an exploding parcel at the head office of Capita Group PLC in London. The company has numerous government contracts, including designing and running a system for enforcing the congestion charge imposed on motorists in central London.

Two people were injured Tuesday in an explosion at Vantis PLC in Wokingham, 40 miles southwest of London. A spokesman for the accounting company said the parcel was addressed to a client whom he refused to identify.

British media widely reported that Vantis handles the collection of speeding ticket fines for the government.

Police also flocked back to central London Wednesday and evacuated part of an office building after employees reported a suspicious package, but the British Broadcasting Corp. reported the parcel was believed by law enforcement to be a hoax. The package was reportedly addressed to Britney Spears.

The Irish Republican Army used letter bombs in the early 1970s as part of its campaign to end British rule in Northern Ireland, targeting numerous British government offices. The tactic maimed dozens of people but killed nobody.

In recent years, animal rights activists have also sent letter bombs to people involved in animal testing.
