The life of Iggy Pop, as reported in the press, as stated on record and as amplified by gossip, is a classic rock ‘n’ roll myth of ventures on the brink of the abyss, of madness, repentance and renewal. Iggy’s gods, and the demons he has struggled with, belong to the culture of rock ‘n’ roll.

A few years back? Iggy (or Mr. Pop, as the New York Times refers to him) lives in that rarefied zone inhabited by the true avatars of rock who struck its template in the 1960s, and survived through the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and beyond. It is not enough that the Stooges virtually single-handedly godfathered punk rock, garage rock and American heavy metal more than three decades ago, or that Iggy Pop went on to conquer Europe and the far East as a headlining phenomenon in the ’90s. His status today, filling stadiums (and hundreds of websites) around the world with his energy, his nerve, and his charisma indicates that the specter of Iggy Pop is a far more universal force in rock than many suspect.

Although he has had only limited commercial success, is he the “Godfather†of punk?

btw: the Weirdness is out on March 5th 2007, tescos probably will be selling Dylanesque rather than this so you will have to get it elsewhere. £7.99 on cd-wow to pre-order, the tracks are:

Trollin'

You Can't Have Friends

Atm

My Idea of Fun

Weirdness

Free & Freaky

Greedy Awful People

She Took My Money

End of Christianity

Mexican Guy

Passing Cloud

I'm Fried

Essential albums:

The Stooges (The Stooges)

Funhouse (The Stooges)

Raw Power (Iggy & the Stooges)

The Idiot

Lust For Life

A Million In Prizes (Compilation)

The man is a marvel. He's recorded two of the greatest albums of all time - Funhouse and Raw Power. He definitely influenced punk and metal and he's bloody awesome live.

I'm glad somebody said he was an influence on American Metal, cos he sure wasn't an influence on the likes of Ozzy, Iommi, Page, Plant or Blackmore, that's for damn sure....

Cool geezer though, and Johnny Rotten/The Sex Pistols certainly rated the man, regularly covering "No Fun" at Pistols gigs...

But that was because they were more or less contempories. That's like saying the Velvets weren't influential because Pink Floyd (Syd-era) or Soft Machine didn't sound like em. I think Iggy had a influence on later metal.

I got into Iggy Pop & the Stooges thanks to his connection with David Bowie.

My favourite track of his is the rather obvious:

Iggy Pop & The Stooges - No Fun (Live in Detroit 2006)
