Posted February 12, 200718 yr 59% of Portuguese voters said yes to the referendum question that said: "Do you agree with the depenalization of the voluntary interruption of pregnancy up to the 10th week, in an appropriate health facility?". "No" votes were 41%. Although there weren't enough votes to reach 50% of people who did vote (44%) for the referendum to be official, it seems that the law is due to be changed by 2008. In the earlier referendum in 1998, "No" had won by 51% but with a 80% of the voting population did not vote then. So far in Portugal, the abortion is only legal up to the 12th week in case of the fetus's malformation, of great danger for the mother's health and of rape. It is calculated that 11 000 illegal abortions are made in Portugal each year.

February 12, 200718 yr yikes.. I didn't realise abortion was nigh-on illegal in Portugal. It just goes to show... religion still has far too firm a hold on your beautiful country.....
February 13, 200718 yr Well, then what about the depenalization of killing and stealing, cause those are among the 10 commandments and we need a state free of any religious influence...
February 13, 200718 yr Well, then what about the depenalization of killing and stealing, cause those are among the 10 commandments and we need a state free of any religious influence... use your common sense...... we dont need religion to dictate our moral values, its a no-brainer really.
February 14, 200718 yr I'm very impressed that Portugal had a referendum. Good for them. I wish there was more voting on issues in the UK,
February 15, 200718 yr use your common sense...... we dont need religion to dictate our moral values, its a no-brainer really. And what does it has to do with the aborption issue? We don´t need religion to dictate our moral values, but that doesn´t mean ANYTHING that is forbidden by religion should be legalized. Aborption remains a morally repugnat attitude, and it´s coward and people who commit this type of thing are repugnant for me and I don´t want to have them in my social circle.

YOU brought other 'crimes' into the equasion!
February 16, 200718 yr eh? YOU brought other 'crimes' into the equasion! If it is a crime or not, it´s not an opinion, it´s an objective matter and depends on what the legislation says. In my country it is, altought the criminous hardly gets charged. Wether it´s something morally aceptable or not it´s a different story and that´s what we should debate...
