she said she studied James Brown so she coul do a performance that he would be proud of

I thought it was brilliant, yea there was a few slightly out of tune bits but she had all the emotions and power there, was great.

This review sums it up nicely:

In any event, inviting X-tina to cover James Brown is just playing to her weaknesses. There's no note Aguilera can't turn into 10, and she predictably eradicated the melody while giving us a tour of her range. Going to her knees JB-style, though, earns her a little grade inflation.

I couldn't tell a word she was saying. And the scream was awful. Yes, it was in tune, but screaming isn't singing.

If she sung it in whistle register then it would of sounded better -_-

she couldn't just sing it in her own style when its a tribute to james brown, i thought it was fantastic and i prefer her peformances when she doesn't hit everyone note and makes a few mistakes...makes it more real

She sang a whistle note in a VERY strong mixed voice. It was insane.

And it was all based on James Brown, including the screech.

Perfect performance.
