Posted February 13, 200718 yr Taking their name from a Velvet Underground LP, Difford and Tilbrook formed the band after recruiting Jools Holland, Kakoulli and Gunn. Difford and Tilbrook kept getting labelled with the new “Lennon and McCartney†tag they broke up just when international success was taking off. With hits like Take me I’m yours, Cool for cats, Up the junction, Tempted, Labelled with love and Another nail in the heart. Although they have reformed a few times they never captured the heady days of the late 70’s early 80’s.
February 13, 200718 yr a great band, intelligent pop, influencial and often overlooked. 'take me im yours', 'slap and tickle' were my favs.
February 16, 200718 yr A great band along with XTC the most criminally talented yet overlooked Band in UK Pop history. My favourite track of their's is the title track of their 3rd from last album Some Fantastic Place from 1993 (sadly no video on Youtube). Just like XTC they made some great music 1978-1982 before dipping in quality until their last 3 albums on major record labels (XTC - Skylarking 1987, Oranges & Lemons 1989 & Nonsuch 1992; Squeeze - Play 1991, Some Fantastic Place 1993, Ridiculous 1995) where they both raised their standards to critical acclaim minus the love of the record buying public. March 13, 200718 yr *Breaking News* According to musicweek, Squeeze have just announced they're reforming.
March 13, 200718 yr *Breaking News* According to musicweek, Squeeze have just announced they're reforming. (please adopt godlike genius Charlie Brooker voice here!!!) its not *Breaking News* its obv news they were in the paper like a month ago. obv they would end up reactivaing the name. wonder if the motorhome will be used on this trip  http://www.travelizmo.com/archives/2007-winnebago-itasca-impulse.jpg
March 15, 200718 yr I loved "Up the Junction". Classic tune & could have been written by Lennon/McCartney.
March 15, 200718 yr I agree with thisispop - both Squeeze and XTC have been criminally forgotten by the record buying public.... it's bands like these who should be winning Lifetime Achievement awards at the Brits..... hugely influential and groundbreaking.... yet, because they sell no records these days - forget them.

March 16, 200718 yr The irony is that Dogs Die In Hot Heat's debut album is far better than either of the two albums by the enormously successful Kaiser Chiefs who were described by Paul Weller as a "3rd rate XTC tribute act" at the Brits 2006 Awards.

I agree with you there, I mean when 90s acts like Oasis start qualifying before more deserving artists that have been around longer, contributed a lot and not recognised, there is something wrong. I mean even David Bowie hasn't received one yet, he is one such artist that TRULY deserves one more than any other. How about Paul McCartney, has he received a BRIT lifetime achievement award yet. In fact is there a list somewhere of all the BRIT lifetime achievement award winners?

Yes I posted them when someone asked this question when the BRITS awards were on: The Lifetime Achievement award has always been a load of c**p. Have you seen the list of winners? You may aswell give one to my Gran  Your wish............. BRITs Lifetime Achievement / Outstanding Contribution Award winners: 1977 The Beatles 1982 John Lennon 1983 Paul McCartney 1984 George Martin (The Beatles producer) & The Rolling Stones 1985 The Police 1986 Wham! :o 1987 Eric Clapton 1988 The Who 1989 Cliff Richard 1990 Queen 1991 Status Quo <_< 1992 Freddie Mercury :o (his solo career hardly deserved a BRIT, it would be like giving one to Gary Barlow!) 1993 Rod Stewart 1994 Van Morrison 1995 Elton John 1996 David Bowie 1997 Bee Gees 1998 Fleetwood Mac 1999 Eurythmics  2000 Spice Girls :arrr: 2001 U2 (since when have U2 been British! ) 2002 Sting  (his solo post-Police career has not been that good) 2003 Tom Jones :o 2004 Duran Duran (the most deserving winner since 1998, although that is more of a criticism of the previous years winners then a compliment to the best Pop band of the 1980s) 2005 Bob Geldof (wtf!) 2006 Paul Weller (given for his entire career The Jam, Style Council & solo) 2007 Oasis (with the exception of Paul Weller, the most deserving winner since Fleetwood Mac) Acts who should have won an outstanding Contribution ahead of U2 (A great act but they are Irish not from the UK! so they should not have won, same goes for Bob Geldof), Freddie Mercury, Sting, Bob Geldof, Tom Jones, Spice Girls, Wham, Eurythmics & Status Quo are The Kinks, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin (Page & Plant), John Lydon (Sex Pistols, Public Image Limited & solo), The Smiths or Morrissey, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys & Kate Bush.
March 16, 200718 yr Thanks for the list, Richard, i did see the original thread, but obviously forgotten that. Wham! was way too soon, however i think George Michael on his own deserves a BRIT lifetime achievement award. I think the time is right, and i can see it happening eventually.

XTC seem to be the name to drop esp following the word 'Angular'. just last week the words XTC and Angular were used in the new Good Shoes album review. im getting the idea thats a better thing to be compared to than the Jesus Jones comparison in the Enter Shikari review on teletext (4/10)

Suggs jokes maybe he should get some cash from them from knicking all his ideas (however this thread is being pre-recorded so dont bother phoning virgin to voice your opinion    )
March 20, 200718 yr Personally I would say that The Ordinary Boys are the new (rather rubbish) Madness and The Killers are the new Duran Duran.
March 22, 200718 yr Personally I would say that The Ordinary Boys are the new (rather rubbish) Madness then again madness could be the new rubbish madness. sorry to any fans of that band but that song sorry was shocking in it's $h!teness.
March 30, 200718 yr a great band, intelligent pop, influencial and often overlooked. 'take me im yours', 'slap and tickle' were my favs. Their two most synth-heavy singles too! I like those, plus "Is That Love?", "Another Nail In My Heart" and most of the others.
