Most of the disco music of the late 70’s was instantly forgettable, and was left back in the 70’s where it belongs. But there is no doubt it filled a need for the dance clubs of the period. One band that seemed to endure were Chic (Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards), with hits like “Le Freakâ€, Dance dance dance, I want your love and Good times. They probably had an influence on funk, dance and hip hop. Their songs have been ripped off and sampled countless times.

Others like Earth Wind and fire, Sister Sledge and Rose Royce had their moments.

For me apart from Donna Summer it has to be the songs of Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards (The CHIC organisation). They really were the Timbaland (Timothy Mosley)/Danja (Nate Hills) of their day.

As well as their hits under their own name including "Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" (1977), "Everybody Dance" (1977), "Le Freak" (1978), "I Want Your Love" (1978), "Good Times" (1979), and "My Forbidden Lover" (1979).

They were also responsible (collectively or individually for producing &/or writing the following):

Sister Sledge - He's The Greatest Dancer, We Are Family & Lost In Music (all originally 1979), & Frankie (1985).

Sheila B. Devotion - Spacer (1979)

Diana Ross - Upside Down, I'm Coming Out & My Old Piano (all 1980)

Debbie Harry - Backfired (1981)

Carly Simon - Why (1982)

David Bowie - Let's Dance, China Girl & Modern Love (all 1983)

INXS - Original Sin (1984)

Duran Duran - The Reflex & Wild Boys (1984), A View To A Kill (1985) & Notorious (1986)

Madonna - Like A Virgin (1984), Material Girl, Dress You Up, Angel (all 1985)

Power Station - Some Like It Hot & Get It On (both 1985)

Thompson Twins - Lay Your Hands On Me, Don't Mess With Doctor Dream & King For A Day (all 1985)

Robert Palmer - Addicted To Love & I Didn't Mean To Turn You On (both 1986)

Stevie Winwood - Higher Love (1986)

ABC - When Smokey Sings & The Night You Murdered Love (both 1987)

Jody Watley - Looking For A New Love & Don't You Want Me (both 1987)

Rod Stewart - Lost In You & My Heart Can't Tell You No (both 1989)

B-52's - Roam (1989)

id agree that 99% of 70's disco was awful... especially to a punk /rock fan! lol.

chic were the class act, plus sylvester '(you make me feel) mighty real' , abba had a few decent disco/pop tracks.. 'summer night city' was good. george benson 'gimmie the night', and gene chandler 'get down' were another 2 i liked.

i detested the falsetto beegees c**p though.... night fever and tragedy might have been popular and successful comercially but it just irritated me and still does.

Modern day electro owes a huge debt to 'I Feel Love' which, as already noted, is credited mainly to Donna Summer who sung it...but it's arguably Giorgio Moroder who deserves the main credit.

Legend has it the double time bassline was created by mistake when he switched it to 2x by mistake, thus creating one of the most influential sounds in music history.

well true, but dont forget the euro sounds from groups like kraftwerk... giorgio moroder wasnt the only guy messing about with electronics :)

and Frank Farian has to be respected, esp when regarding anyone who cant actually sing

In 1995 Donna Summer had to re record her hit I Feel Love, because the record company had lost the master tape of the original recording! Silly fools! Can you imagine they did that with some of the Beatles originals or the Stones.
