This is a joint discussion and rate thread.

Fans are invited to discuss anything and everything about the cover versions Darius did on PI.

The discussion part of this thread will end at midnight on Sunday.

On Monday the list of the PI cover versions will be posted and fans will be asked to rate them.

The top one will automatically go into the cover versions final, the next 2 will go into a rate against the runner-ups of other groups.

Does anyone need a reminder list of the covers just to help the discussion along?

Yes, post the list please - I'm sure I'll recall them all eventually but it'll be good to see the list :) Might have to have a re-listen to rate them though - it's been a long time ;)

I understand the first part about rating and the top one going through, but I think I'll have to watch what happens to the others to get the gist of that maybe :)

I do, I think I can recall some, but not all. I do have a CD I burnt of them actually, must rememeber to listen, it's been so long since I thought about them.

Baby can I hold you I know I loved

Here's the list, I think.

Future Love Paradise ( For discussion only, because it’s too short to be included in rate)

Something Inside So Strong

When A Child Is Born (Xmas)

What The World Needs Now ( Bacharach)

Baby Can I Hold You (Movies)

I Have A Dream (ABBA)

Let’s Face The Music And Dance (Big Band)

Whole Again ( no.1s – contestants’ choice)

It’s Not Unusual (all versions show/concert/Will special)

Dancing In The Moonlight (Judges’ choice)

Make It Easy On Yourself

Let There Be Love

I've included LTBL because Darius sang it in the PI concert and on the Big Band album but please say if you want it removed from the rate list.

Future Love Paradise

I don't think Darius should have been asked to sing something straight off the cuff like that.

He had prepared Colourblind in good faith because he'd been told by Nicki Chapman that there would be no problem with him singing one of his own songs. The judges decided it was unfair to other contestants and that's OK, but IMHO they should have taken the next few auditionees and given him a chance to rehearse another song not just expect him to dump his guitar and sing.

I agree.

I loved the small bit of FLP he sang though, I would have loved to hear more. an di a way I am glad he didnt sing CB, much better to have it as a complete suprise as his debut single

It was inconsistency. He couldn't sing CB because it would disadvantage others but they all had days to prepare and he had one minute, so the judges disadvantaged him.

Good job Pete Waterman liked it.

"Interesting choice" more like lucky choice - thank goodness the radio dj played something memorable while D was going to the audition.

I am not familiar with Future Love Paradise, and I can't remember it from his original audition. Does anyone know how I can hear it please? Also if there is a way of hearing all of D's songs, or even better seeing video of them from the show, I would love to see or hear it :)

SM had them all on .org but she's updated the site a few times since so they might not be there any more. I'll have a look and get back to you.

Here you go. I think you need realplayer to hear them.

I've checked a few and they do seem to be still working

I always thought Make It Easy On Yourself was by Scott Walker but it's by the Walker Brothers. Maybe Scott did sing it later. It's certainly one of my PI favourites but then I love D's baritone.

I'm just glad he didn't do Kerry's(?) talking bit in the middle. It was really nice of Natasha to be there, I thought.

After Darius sang the song, I only listened to Atomic Kitten's version once.

There wasn't really a problem.

I'm sure he must have known several songs he could just sing.......rehearse....naa....didn't need to...cut and dried....no problem :cheer:

I'm sure he did. I wish he'd sung More Than Words. Maybe if he'd been given a chance to think, he would have.

I think it was unnecessary for them to send Darius out and then re-shoot his entry but still make him ask if he could sing his own song just for the judges to say no - that set him apart and some people at home may have seen that as proof of the Popstars "arrogance".

Something Inside So Strong - not his best, but I do like him singing it....he wasn't the best that week and the results were fair.

When A Child Is Born (Xmas) - Couldn't believe it when he walked on to the stage.....I adore this song...on my burnt CD you can't hear the 'wrong' note as much as on the DVD so I listen to it frequently.

What The World Needs Now ( Bacharach) - Another wonderful song, just love it

Baby Can I Hold You (Movies) - Yes loved this too....

I Have A Dream (ABBA) - seem to remember he did this well but I'm not going to listen to it again 'cos I can't stand Abba song....sorry

Let’s Face The Music And Dance (Big Band) - I was working this night so had to wait and couldn't vote :o Can't understand why they bothered giving him the cane for him to throw it straight away....good song

Whole Again ( no.1s – contestants’ choice) - Yes it was great Natasha was there...did the song proud....and yes every time I hear it by anyone else I always think Darius did it better.

It’s Not Unusual (all versions show/concert/Will special) - loved seeing him perform this but it's not a favourite.

Dancing In The Moonlight (Judges’ choice) - He was nervous.....could have done it better

Make It Easy On Yourself - Ohh to die for ......but only when choosing from these.....

I loved the choices even if Darius wasn't too keen on some and he sang them well but when I watch back now......he's come a long long way.

I'd rather have his own songs any day...............perhaps till you get to the Maidstone covers

Now what was I suposed to be doing Baytree

found it :)

Have to agree with Baytree there ..... TV Producers will do anything to make sure the angle they want is there and if they have decided how its to be, then you have had it. Thats how Aubergenie never got in front of Simon Cowell She wasnt the blonde haired skinny minx and too good to be one of the joke contenders .... all decided by a producer

Make it Easy On Yourself was the song where I fell in love with Darius so no other song measures for me .....

I'm sure he did. I wish he'd sung More Than Words. Maybe if he'd been given a chance to think, he would have.

I don't think there was anything wrong with Future Love Paradise as a first audition piece though - it came across well enough to get him through anyway ;) I wouldn't want to change anything about that audition, other than Simon calling him 'corny' and their deliberating that seemed to take forever  It was that; and the Ant-Dec referral to Darius and the stupid wig stunt, that I felt were derogatory towards Darius and reinforcing of previously created negative images, if anything. But I think people must see want they want to see anyway though, because I've never seen arrogance in Darius anyway. I didn't think Darius himself, came across badly in that first audition, in fact he looked quite worried and vulnerable to me - and I was a person at home (still am lol!). It actually impresses me more when an artist shows some individuality/does or wants to do something a bit different. I liked the fact that Darius showed originality/creativity and tried to push for that in these shows - that's why I became interested in him - but I think that was more evident on PopStars, than PopIdol. I've always wondered if Darius was in anyway responsible for inspiring the different approach taken by Fame Academy.

Agree with trishaboo, Make it easy on yourself was a favourite but I also loved Baby can I hold you - his version. If he did some covers would love to hear these again. In view of the fact that the latest x factor candidates have done albums of virtually all covers, should he do some covers for an album. At the time of pop idol and after it was thought that one should be creative and write ones own as he did but suddenly its fine for the latest candidates to do all covers and fans think that fine so why not D. I know thats being controversial but did love the above two covers I have mentioned.
